If you are offering other services relevant to 4.2
they can be offered here or on the 4.2 community page

This is a Very Good List.

I know that he can speak for himself (but may be too modest to) but has MU's plea for proper localisation been taken on board?

I'd like to propose a ground rule that nothing new is added until it's been properly localised. And then perhaps a second one which states that nothing new will be added until the existing content has had the same treatment.

A properly international Puppy would have considerable appeal. When running from a live CD without (or ignoring) a save file could ask which language as well as which keyboard and then configure itself accordingly.

Of course this will be followed by the question on whether you want a single (i.e. root) user set up or one with multiple users .........

Excellent sentiment, Nick, however the 'team' that were doing the 41 language Puppy [major success IMHO] is presently solely represented by Irihapeti, I believe, so if anyone would like to help....

I think magerlab, Nathan F, & maybe muggins, have also 'input similar ideas'

not yet implemented

You can count me in for developing the start page - using the Puppy Web Desktop as the basis for the default home page - incorporating as much of the included documentation as possible. I will also try to utilize the included icons and desktop background to the greatest extent possible to reduce size - I may need to include a few extra icons depending on the theming we choose to go with.

Now there's a can of worms about to be cracked open. Since when has it been decided that multi-user support was to be a part of this/these new Puppy/Puppies?

Don't forget that Puppy already has a user account called "Spot."

"5.0 Slackware" is going to be based on what? 3.xx or 4.xx? And which kernel thereof? If 3.xx, will there be issues caused by kernel differences between the 3.xx and 4.xx series?

Live Help will be open around the clock so all countries will be able to use it. <etc>

Dude: You know I love you like a brother ... so please don't take this as a personal attack. It's not.

I think the Live Help is a wonderful idea, however consider that a form of live help already exists with #puppylinux on IRC. Adding another form of live help at this time will stretch existing live help resources with a net-loss effect.

Might I suggest an alternative for the immediate future: polish up #puppylinux by providing 24/7 coverage by dedicated Puppy types. The vehicle (Freenode and the channel) and the comm devices (IRC clients in Puppy) already exist. The only thing missing is, ahem ... dedicated channel management and staffing.

For the uninformed, the channel founder, T260G (aka Cricket) seldom if ever visits #puppylinux. ChanOp orneryolphart (aka Gary, or Ahmratcheer) just returned after being MIA/AWOL for months(!). And Keo's (aka Dr`Keovorkian) attendance is spotty at best.

Of those three, top level ChanOps, not one uses Puppy Linux. Of the remaining lower level ChanOps, one died over a year ago, and the rest are MIA/AWOL.

Once #puppylinux is cleaned up, then and only then should other live help options be developed.

JMHO,

-aj

Root.

" Now there's a can of worms about to be cracked open. "

If one thing that gets me going is Root.
Booting up some of the other Clem Kaddiddlehopper distros
with the ROOTED thing is infuriating.

Leave the bloody thing alone.
Works perfectly.
Easy for Windows refugees to enter the Puppy comfort zone.

You want root....make a Puplet.
Friggin Root.
One of the smartest decisions that Barry made when
he tossed it out.

I hope my views are not too obvious.

Chris.

s there any merit in establishing a scheme whereby releases with different intentions are numbered differently?

Thanks guys

Puppy 4.2 is called Puppy 4.2
It has the codename (for fun and logos 'Deep Thought')
The CE is dropped as it will be an official version based on 4.11 (Barry will release aprox 30 October)

If patches or improvements (LTS type) are added
we will have Puppy 4.1.1, 4.1.2 etc

Ttuuxx and Technosaurus are added to the team

Very Happy Hello,
I would love to offer up what little help I might be... Very Happy
Especially Graphics...Iconsets, Themes, Backdrops, ect...
I have some limited scripting ability, but not enough to stand in this crowd. Very Happy
Maybe just eye candy, a JWM theme, or a small tweak/package or two..?
And of course as a tester... Cool

@puppyluvr

You're immediately disqualified for overuse of emoticons. Try Ubuntu: they love that crap. You'll flourish there.

I've been meaning to reply to this for a while, but haven't had the online time to do so before now.

ttuuxxx I don't think we could do without your enthusiasm in the 4.2 team. Personally, I'm counting on you to help get those packages compiled and working flawlessly in the smallest possible size.

One of the (small) disappointments about 2.15CE for me was that I couldn't get it all in under 132Mb, even though it had a whole different focus to a normal release. I'd like to see 4.2 meet Barry's targets and stay well below 100Mb.

My vision for 4.2 is to come up with an official Dingo release at least as small, up-to-date, workable and bug free as one of Barry's own releases. That's not an easy task either, but I'm sure it will make Dougal happy, among others.

I don't see the 4.2 project as 2.15CE revisited, in terms of size, package content, wish lists and innovation. Rather I see it as a chance for us to show that we can continue what Barry started, because that is just so successful. After all, that's why we are all here, isn't it?

Cheers.
