Where is the problem?
It has no menue and no taskbar.
So it is ideal for "kicker", the KDE-Panel.
Or you use wxB-menue and fbpanel.

I added a Themeselector:
Image

Install the oroborus-Dotpup, and if you like, the themes.
Then exit X and run "xwin startoroborus".

If your ROX-icons seem to "float" over other windows, remove the "-o" from "rox -o ..." in /root/.xinitrc

To customize oroborus, edit /root/.oroborusrc (if you have NO themes installed) or /root/.oroborusrc-personal (if you DO have themes installed).

Homepage:
http://www.oroborus.org/
wxB-Menue:
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic ... t=wxbmenue
fpanel:
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic ... 3674#23674

You might need the reboot-roxapp to be able to exit Puppy.
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic ... oot+roxapp

Or install the attached "deskmenu".
You can add the command "deskmenu&" to /root/.xinitrc to launch it with X.
With a click with the middle mousebutton on your Desktop, you will get this menue:

Yes :)
I used it for an own Desktop I was working on.
It also has a very clear sourcecode, so i was able to patch it for my needs, even though I am no good C-coder at all.

Maybe we need a small customization for kicker, to be able to exit Puppy without the reboot-roxapp or the menue mentioned on the oroborus-homepage.
I will look closer to this these days :P

Well the fbpanel menu is a mess, so good luck with that.
Although if the menu structure was easy enough. I would switch to using this
and fbpanel. Eats less resources = better performance.

MU it is fast and beautiful, but these are the problems i am facing

pinboard icons overlap the window manager
dock apps are not docked with kicker they keep floating on the desktop. I also tried using kdetrayproxy app dose not work with that either.

oroborus-theme-chooser also does not work it tries to find main.pb in ./ rather that ./resources. got it working by moving all pb to the same folder

Those tyring to test it with kde might want to remove the kdesktop.desktop file from /opt/kde/share/autostart to prevent the kdesktop from starting

Bombayrockers,

>pinboard icons overlap the window manager

try to run rox without the -o option.

>dock apps are not docked with kicker they keep floating on the desktop. I also tried using kdetrayproxy app dose not work with that either.

Strange, here it works, clock, soundmixer, storage media :shock:
But i started kicker from a console, maybe that has an effect? Will have to test it more.

>oroborus-theme-chooser also does not work it tries to find main.pb in ./ rather that ./resources. got it working by moving all pb to the same folder

Strange too.. tried to run it from wxB-menue, from rxvt, from xfe, from rox.
Can someone confirm that :?:

Maybe the KDE-problems depend on how you start it.
You might try a very simple .xinitrc:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
# add here other stuff from puppys .xinitrc
# like setting a background
#

rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin
sleep 0&&exec kicker&
exec $CURRENTWM
Maybe set sleep to 2

What ROX-version do you use?
i still use the old one.
May test 2.3 tomorrow (time to go sleeping...)

using the default rox with 1.0.6

I found the problem with oroborus-theme-chooser when i looked into it
it says cd /usr/local/oroborus-theme-chooser/resource
where as the folder is actually /usr/local/oroborus-themes
changed that in the script. now running fine.

error

#10 Post by klhrevolutionist »

How do I start this thing ?
At the prompt I enter startorborus, and I get this error,
error while loading shared libraries: libXxf86vm.so.1

Another thing, When this issue is resolved.
How would I start orborus & fbpanel at the same time ?

Please make a more end user dotpup version

#11 Post by PeterSieg »

Hi Mark and who else is involved.

When things are settled a bit and most problems solved, could you please
make a dotpup that contains:

* oroborus wm
* theme selector
* desktop menu
* fbpanel
* puppy menu for fbpanel
* xinitrc ready to go for all of above

So that one can install just 1 pup file and then have oroborus+fbpanel+
puppy menu+themes...
Thanks for that!

PS
Have fun :)

#12 Post by PeterSieg »

Hi Mark, this is what I get after installing your 3 dotpup's:

Image

LibXxf86vm.so.1 is missing. It is also not in usr_devx.sfs...

Do you have it..? Then probably you should include it in your dotpup...

PS
Have fun :)

deskmenu diesn't work?

#15 Post by PeterSieg »

I forgot to start it first :oops:
But then on right click I get rox..? left+middle click nothing..?

All libs are present with usr_devx.sfs loaded... But deskmenu needs
a HUGE amount of libs..!

Next will see how fbpanel get along.

PS
Have fun :)

Lazy question (Yes, I know that installing it and checking would answer this):

Is the combination of oroborus + fbpanel actually smaller than JWM?

Or is the visual appeal the main difference?

No, it is even a bit larger, because the Window-decorations use .xpm -Bitmaps.
Oroborus with the oroborus-theme will use 280 kb on your harddrive, with all themes installed 3-4 Megabyte.

The biggest advatage of oroborus is the excellent NetWM-compliance, see the new post in the fbpanel-thread concerning Window-control.

And of course that it looks nice still being relatively small.
