SkinnyPup 4.0a - Sort of like Fat Free...

#1 Post by NoNameAmI »

I just finished and tested a "Skinny" Puppy 4.0 and it seems to be working good. I need others to test it out and let me know if theres anything I may have missed.

SkinnyPup is made with Puppy unleased and is based on 4.0

Download (53.51MB):

MD5:

I removed a lot, added nano, unrpm, p7zip, unrar.

Seamonkey is not installed and neither are any libs from it.

I'm not sure what all was not added... only things I added were nano, p7zip, unrpm, unrar.

This is the first time I used the puppy unleashed thing. It seemed pretty straightforward, however I'm not sure how to get all the names of the packages that were not included and what packaged were.

If someone could help me with this, I will post the result.

Anything Fat Free or Skinny gets my attention,
especially if it's browser free.

I'm using Opera-9.52,flashplayer-9.0.48.0 and
REALPLAYER_11 (for.ra and.ram) at
http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/.

I'm sorry to say that I haven't found a way
for flashplayer to play well with the latest
Firefox 3.01-- or Firefox 3.01 to play well
with Puppy 2.13------------ :(

Thanks for Skinny !
and Thanks Guys for all those great .pets ! :D

I took a look at the packages.txt file and removed any line that said it was off (meaning that it was not included). I'm pretty certain that packages.txt lists everything on the initial system, so this should be what is there.

I have been playing with Unleashed myself and made a script to make creating and editing package.txt files easier for me. It turned into a lesson learning bash, awk, and grep. Learn by doing as they say, it is ugly but did what I wanted, maybe it would be useful for someone else.

Usage: makelist.sh pakages.txt (or name of your package list) [on|off]
on lists only packages on
off lists only packages off
saves to file mypkglist.txt in same directory
It might list duplicates if there are different version of the same name.
Of course use at own risk, etc.

I downloaded from Todd's site, but when it boots, it looks like normal Dingo. SeaMonkey is there. The CD looks the right size. I have some other Puppies on the hard drive, but I entered 0 when the boot routine displayed the files.

Later: Whoa! I went ahead and installed SP to my hard drive, and when I booted it from the hard drive, it was skinny! No SeaMonkey, etc.!

I have high hopes for this derivative, because I'm setting up a small school computer lab with old equipment that won't run the full-fledged Linuxes. I'd like to run frugal to enhance the speed, but that means I need to run skinny. And since I'm going to use both Firefox and OpenOffice, I don't need a lot of useless (to me and mine) stuff taking up space.

Puppy 4.1 will be out Real Soon Now. Do you have plans to upgrade SP to 4.1?

I'm still a newbie at Puppy; is there a good way to save customizations so you don't lose everything when you upgrade, say from 4.0 to 4.1?

When you ran Skinny, did you have a leftover pup_save file from a previous installation of Dingo? That would explain the erratic behavior. Watch it as it boots - it will tell you it's looking for an old pup_save file and using it. You don't want that until you've settled on a version.

I think you can do the upgrade thing if you do a frugal install of Puppy. Then you just replace the four main puppy files with the same four from the newer version's CD but keep your pup_save file -- something like that. If you load a newer version on an old one, it will "attempt" to do something similar but i believe the results will be somewhat unpredictable. Keep experimenting before you spend a lot of time tweaking (but you know that already).

Somebody correct me if i'm wrong!!! :?

It must have been something like that, because I just repeated the install on my laptop, and it started out skinny from the CD, as it should have.

Well, that couldn't be simpler, and it makes sense to me, since all the customizing goes in the pup_save file.

My "discovery" of Puppy comes at a good time; I'm on Fall Break this week! :)

Where Is IceWM Preferences File?

#15 Post by LaneLester »

I installed Firefox 3 from http://world-mega-mall.com/puppy-linux/index.htm and I mistakenly selected the background thing instead of the icon thing when I was setting up the desktop icon. The result is that I now have no wallpaper at all.

So I went to /root/.icewm to edit the preferences file... but there isn't one! And there isn't one in /etc/X11/icewm!

Where is it?

Not sure if this is what you are looking for

The wallpapers are kept in /usr/share/backgrounds.

The wallpaper selecter is menu->desktop ->wallpaper setter

Hi Todd Itried to get thro' to the link you suggested but

I also tried the the (dot) .it and thats not much help, I lost a

when it fell over - so not keen on that method of keeping
data.

What help have you got please ?

Hmm -- try booting the live CD using the pfix=ram option to ignore your saved settings. Now open ~/.icewm in the live Puppy -- then mount your HD (hda1?) and open it via Rox in a second window; finally copy the .icewm menu from the booted live CD into the ~/.icewm directory in your HD installation. Am i making sense?

Lemme know if it doesn't work and i'll boot into a live Puppy and try it myself and note the step-by-steps...

As far as the backgrounds-do you have icons? If not, check the forums for losing your pinboard...
