Problem with the compiler...

#1 Post by Johnny Reb »

If anyone can help me with this I'd be very grateful. Until yesterday I had been running Puppy 1.0.5 with the compiler installed in a fat32 partition as a pup001, and had been running Puppy 1.0.4 installed on the hard drive in another partition. I decided to go ahead and upgrade the 1.0.4 partition, and had intended to do it from the cd, but Puppy had other ideas, and copied everything over from the Pup001 file. I then reformatted the fat32 partition, which has proved to be a problem because when I went to use the compiler I found that somehow during the upgrade something broke, and it won't compile and quites at exactly the same place while compiling every time. I tried it on a couple of different programs to make sure it wasn't something in the program I was compiling that was causing the problem. Ok, well I figured I'd just install Puppy on the hard drive of the partition I had just reformatted and be back in business, but again, Puppy had other ideas and copied the files from the existing hard drive install including the broken compiler. Now that I've got y'all good and confused, here is the output from the config.log. If y'all have any ideas about how to fix this please let me know.

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by gaim configure 1.5.0, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.59. Invocation command line was

$ ./configure

I thing the mean problem is you using tcc instead of gcc .
configure:2189: checking for gcc
configure:2205: found /usr/bin/gcc
configure:2215: result: gcc
configure:2459: checking for C compiler version
configure:2462: gcc --version </dev/null >&5
tcc: invalid option -- '--version'
configure:2465: $? = 1
configure:2467: gcc -v </dev/null >&5
tcc version 0.9.22
May you have linked tcc onto gcc . To compile this you need to have Barry's usr_devx.sfs .

Thanks menno, I completly missed that when going over the log. It's quiet possible that that is the problem because I had the tcc installed on Pup 1.0.4 just to see if I could do anything with it. I'll see if I can unlink it and go from there.

That was me that made the above post. For some reason my login expired even though I had not been logged in over 5 minutes.

"If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink,in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, and give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and expenses; And, the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they do now, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account; but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains around the necks of our fellow sufferers; And this is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle in one instance becomes a precedent for a second, that second for a third, and so on 'til the bulk of the society is reduced to be mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering."

Ok, I just switched browsers so maybe I'll be able to stay logged in long enough to make a post, regardless the above two replys by guest were made by me.

[The] assumption that it is the aim of the [American] public school to fan the intelligence and to produce large numbers of alert and curious youths of both sexes is foolish. The state maintains its control of elementary education, not primarily to reduce illiteracy and turn the eyes of the plain people toward the stars, but to make sure that they are not taught anything that is subversive. Public education is thus a police measure. The goal it moves toward is perfect standardization, perfect discipline, perfect imbecility.

Ok, it was linked and I removed the link, however that did not cure the problem. The compiler was still stopping at the same place with this error message: checking how to run the C preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See `config.log' for more details, and on going into config.log it showed it was still trying to use the tcc. I deleted tcc, but now I'm getting this error message in the config.log: error no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH.

I'll paste in the output from the log below, but I couldn't see anything helpful in it. I'm thinking that what will be necessary in order to get the compiler to working again is to include it in the $PATH it's looking for it in, but I don't know what the path is, so I don't know how to include it.

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by gaim configure 1.5.0, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.59. Invocation command line was

Try from rxvt something as gcc -v . That should tell you what the compiler is , if there is one . If you donn't have one try Barry's usr_devx.sfs .

menno, sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but I started downloading the newest puppy, and it took an unusually long time (I'm on dialup, and for some reason the internet was running really slow 1.x K/s download speed)

Anyway, the compiler is there, and it came from usr_devx.sfs. I don't reckon I made it very clear how this problem came to be. I had puppy 1.0.4 installed on a 2gb hd partition, and had installed the tiny c compiler on it just to see what I could do with it. I also had puppy 1.0.5 installed on a fat32 partition as a pup001 file (I did this as soon as 1.0.5 came out just to test it), and I had the usr_devx.sfs installed there. I was running out of room on the pup001 file, and was satisfied enough with puppy 1.0.5 that I decided to go ahead and upgrade the 1.0.4 hd install. I ran the upgrade expecting it to pull files off the cd for the upgrade, but puppy pulled them off the pup001 file, and merged the two installations, and that is how the tiny c compiler got linked to the regular compiler. Ok, well I decided to get around the problem by doing a clean install on the partition where i had pup 1.0.5 installed, and selected the 3 option at boot to do this...........to make a long story short, even though I specified that the install was not an upgrade, puppy still pulled files from the other partition, and i got a clone of it. So that leaves me with two installs of puppy with broken compilers. Not really all that big a deal except that I've very satisfied with my present setup...........with the exception of the broken compiler. I believe I stated in the previous post that I had deleted the tiny c compiler, but I uninstalled it first, and then deleted. Regardless, I need to figure out some way to get the system to recognize the compiler that came with usr_devx.sfs. If you, or anyone else has any suggestions I'd sure appriciate it.

use of usr_devx.sfs

#9 Post by menno »

Try this :
# gcc -v
bash: gcc: command not found
# mount -t squashfs /mnt/hda1/usr_devx.sfs /mnt/linux3 -o loop
# mount -t unionfs -o dirs=/usr:/mnt/linux3=ro none /usr
# gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.3.4/specs
Configured with: ../gcc-3.3.4/configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix --enable-__cxa_atexit --disable-checking --with-gnu-ld --verbose --target=i486-slackware-linux --host=i486-slackware-linux
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.3.4

(if your finished do : )
# umount /usr
In this example I suppose usr_dexv.sfs in on hda1 but maybe somewhere else .
I mount it to something that free in /mnt (I toke linux3) .
And than do a mount as a union .

menno, I tried the above, as you suggested, but as I feared it did not work. When I installed to the hard drive I installed to an ext2 filesystem, and if I'm correct, puppy copied the files in usr_devx.sfs to the ext2 filesystem, and usr_devx.sfs does not exist as a seperate mountable filesystem anymore.

The compiler, gcc-3.3.4 is present in the system, but the only way you can get a response out of it is to cd to /usr/bin and enter ./gcc-3.3.4 and the response it gives is "no input files". So basicly I believe all that I need to do is make puppy recognize that it is present in the system in order to get it to work. I believe this will have to be accomplished by linking gcc-3.3.4 to another file or files, but if I'm correct I don't know which ones it needs to be linked to.

Oh, BTW I did try placing a fresh usr_devx.sfs in both ~/ and / and tried mounting it in both places in the hope that it might overwrite the installed files, but it did not work. Puppy refused to mount it no matter what I tried, including rebooting.

I donn't know , and I donn't hope that that's true . Because when I do a new instalation to my HD I would not have all those things on my HD . Thanks , I ame warned .

But look into /usr/bin is there a gcc-3.3.something ? If so make a link to gcc .

I donn't understand why you cann't mount a *.sfs as far I understand it , it has nothing todo if the system is already in /usr/bin .

menno, yes there is gcc-3.3.4, gccbug, g++, and g++gcc-3.3.4 in /usr/bin. What do I need to link gcc-3.3.4 to? I think that once I get it linked the compiler will be fixed. I believe that when the files were copied during the upgrade the link to gcc-3.3.4 was overwritten by the link to the tiny c compiler, but I don't know what gcc-3.3.4 was linked to.

Equality, in a social sense, may be divided into that of condition, and that of rights. Equality of condition is incompatible with civilization, and is found only to exist in those communities that are but slightly removed from the savage state. In practice, it can only mean a common misery.

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. When there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

For in a Republic, who is the country? Is it the Government which is for the moment in the saddle? Why, the Government is merely a servant merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.
