It's a bug reporting system written for Puppy
First we have to write it

This is part of an email from Prit
I have been thinking - how I can use whatever I have learned making PRITLOG in a better way to help Puppy. And I had started thinking about a bug system, then discarded this idea as I thought Barry might prefer the simple way of doing this on the forum itself.
. . .
Anyway, I will start thinking about this bug reporting system. This time though, I want to hear from you, Barry and others about the functionality that this would need to have. And then I can start working on it.
So this is for all developers to have their input :)

From my viewpoint PritLog (written in PHP) is ideal
http://hardkap.net/pritlog/
as it is simple and parts of it are
even comprehensible to idiot crustaceans (me for example)

My initial ideas - Simple - make it simple . . .

You log in with your email and a password

Each project is made up of:

1. Name of project (these appear on Left - similar to a blog entry
2. Code logged out [name of coder and email of coder] date
3. Code
4. To Do
5. Bug report (the Pritlog comments section can be adapted for this)

Lobster,

This is great idea, i've always hated the fact that bugs are caught on the forum and i agree with the need for a tool for the job.

But, i'm not sure it's a good idea to seperate it from the forums and especially not a good idea to use a blogging tool.

My recommendation would be to look at modifying this forum with a phpBB bug tracker mod:

see: http://www.phpbb.com/mods/db/

Here is a discussion on the phpBB forums.

They talk about this (JR Sweets), and this.

I think this will be a great add-on to this forum (esp with single login)

I guess we will need John M's administration rights.

@nutts4life:

Thanks for the info. This is a good idea too. I will try this mod out on a test PHPBB installation and see if this works. Maybe I will give a link so that Puppy users can see it in action.

I did not look at expanding PHPBB at all. All I did was to search for any available addons for Drupal with this feature.

One main thing would be - it should be easy to use. As Jason mentioned, I have seen many bug trackers that make it so difficult for the users.

I have installed the "bug tracker" mod on my test PHPBB forum. Here is the link to the tracker.
http://hardkap.net/phpbb/tracker.php

Check it out and see if this is a good one for Puppy.

Here is a userid and password to use if you need.

That looks great!

I assume your phpBB is version 3 not 2? what's the plan with the puppy forums are we looking to upgrade to the new phpBB?

Drupal is always a good option as well, but bugs should be raised by all users and not all users need (and really shouldn't have) access to the puppy site.

From inital look that PhpBB tracker looks better than i expected. I think it maybe the answer!

great work by all,

hi prit,

i think addition of the tracker to the forum would be the way to go.

i looked at your test forum:
- the bugtracker would be miles ahead of our actual 'solution' and
- better than a different tool at a different place with different logins.

cheers

Thanks for looking into the tracker installation.

The forum admin (John Murga) will need to make the decision of whether or not to install this on this forum.

Oops, I didn't read this thread until now, so I'm coming in late.

FWIW, I think you've mixed bug reporting with bug tracking and it seems to me that they need to be separated. Bug reporting is done by people like me, who often don't know the cause of problem they are having, or how to describe it in a useful way, or where it belongs in a bug tracking system, or for that matter how to use a bug tracking system. So the first stage in bug eradication is for someone who really, really knows Linux, and Puppy, to divine whether and where the initial report from the forum ought to be put in the bug tracking system, which should be only for the people who are trying to fix the bugs.

It's asking too much of the beginning Puppy user, who doesn't know anything about how Puppy works, and usually not much about Linux, to know just how to describe the problem, and figure out whether it has already been reported and how to add his report to an existing thread, or initiate a useful bug report if it hasn't. And it's the beginners who will make most of the bug reports. If your idea is to be useful, I think it will need to have a gatekeeper or moderator or whatever you want to call him, to enter the trouble reports from the Puppy forum into the bug tracker. He can ask the OP for more info if necessary, then translate everything into a format that will be most useful to the bug eradicators.

That's just my opinion, based on what I've seen in this forum and one or two bug tracking thingies I've tried to puzzle out. (I couldn't, so I gave up trying to report what I thought might be a bug.)

Agree with Flash

You have to register to report a bug?
http://hardkap.net/phpbb/tracker.php

There goes 90% of your bug reporters

What you need is an edit box and report bug (bug now reported)
bug verified TICK box - Details or comment
Action taken TICK box - by whom date
Sorted TICK box - how date

It has to be simple enough for a Mac user
It should offer a puppy treat (sound or redirect) for anyone reporting a bug
Bug reporting should be fun - not a chore

Think different. Think Frisky. Think Puppy.
