VLC 8.6h mediaplayer Lite 7.8MB pet |
|
Updated, Combined all 4 packages now its All-in-one.
Ok well this is my first official shot at compiling this Media player on puppy 4.0,
I built it for my next release of Living Water, The packages were compiled as i386 so no hardware acceleration. But compiled at that speed It doesn't need it.
This version plays online video streams
Dvd's and xvid, divx, Quicktime
Also full screen works fine and also you can change the aspect ratio while the movie is playing without it crashing
Also the sound works.
Just keep in mind this is a basic version that does what most people need and works great on older pc's.
I haven't tested all that much, but what I've seen it works well.
Also no red lines
enjoy ttuuxxx
Please could people using it report some feedback on quality, media type, and cpu and memory used. I do need to know some specs so I can decide if this will be a default media player in some of my releases. Thanks for your input.
Thanks and enjoy

Thanks leon
What kind of cpu, memory are you using it on and what kind of media did play, dvd, divx etc.
I need a bit of technical feedback so I can use it in one of releases and see if it would make a good replacement for gxine
Thanks ttuuxxx

I downloaded the 3 files. Tried to install the two libraries first, the installer gave me expansion errors on both.
The VLC pet installed fine, aside from noting the missing dependencies.
The program actually starts up without them, although it's non-functional due to missing dialog widgets.

They installed well from those sources. I started VLC from the terminal and it works well so far with DVD, avi, and even flv. Woohoo!
My only beef would be that, when you click open, disc, and type in device name (for file path to DVD) it doesn't remember it after closing, as it does on other distros.
VLC is still way better than gxine, in my opinion, since gxine wouldn't play DVDs for me and blinks periodically during full-screen.
For the record, I'm using 4.0 on a Celeron 2.something Ghz with 640mb 266ram, 256mb nvidia.
Edit: I tried some audio, plays mp3 good, has a problem with flac. Plays them, kind of, but choppy.
And XMMS, which was working fine earlier, now refuses to start due to missing libgtk-1.2.so.0; whether related to the VLC install or not, I don't know.

I might give this a try as it is reasonably sized now but is there any advantage over Mplayer/Smplayer?
I have not found a deficiency using that combo (on a P3M 1GHz with 256k ram).
On Windows I was never impressed with VLC, it always seemed to demand too many resources.

-Excellent thats what I like to hear, a great report on an older pc, The settings issue I'll look into, maybe its just a file. Hopefully it would be that easy. Also drag and drop works with it.
Hint
I usually mount the dvd drive then drag the video_ts folder onto VLC, you don't even have to open the folder.

Well The dvd image quality is better, The DvD search is faster, It plays better image quality and faster live video streams from websites. Plus its smaller. Plus it takes less resources.

It shouldn't have any effect with xmms, I think thats unrelated, maybe just reinstall xmms.
as for Flac I tested it and yes its a bit choppy, I'll see what I can do.

ttuuxxx,
Tried out VLC today, works good on some AVI files I had laying around. I tried out some MP4's also, but had NO sound. The picture was there though.
Any thoughts,
JB

Hi JB4x4
Could you open VLC and then
click view/ messages
then start your video
it should give you a display of what is happening.
also I'm building a addon I would like you to try out and see if it works.
Thanks for helping out
ttuuxxx

JB4x4
can you try this little addon package, ?
I have another little bit bigger one I'll build in a bit.
Install the pet then exit VLC and open vlc and try out your video.
Thanks
ttuuxxx
updated
I tried some mp4 without this package and had no sound, then installed it and had sound. So it fixed the problem for me
Hope it works for you

ttuuxxx,
I tried out a couple of MP4's and....... They worked. Thanks alot!! Just curious, it looks like you had to add some codecs and libs. Would you consider repackaging the pet with these?
