LXP pup

#1 Post by gray »

LXP is a modification of Icewm, made to look very very similar to Windows XP.

I donloaded the binaries from sourceforge to experiment in Puppy 4.0. Having got the thing working I thought it might make a good basis for a puplet. The LXP project uses idesk for the desktop and xfe as the file manager. I wasnt impressed with xfe, especially as it needs the fox libraries which really blows out the size. Pcmanfm looked a good alternative. Idesk too proved to be a disappointment, as I could not find a way to get a hotpup system working under Idesk. The file manager pcmanfm looks really good and is pretty small and has the ability to manage the desktop background and icons. A hotpup type system looked feasible with Pcmanfm desktop, but the icon management is still too primitive as there is no way to position the icons. I found pcmanfm to be too immature - it is going to be awsome one day soon, but has too many bugs for now. It does not copy link files correctly and does not display broken links. It also crashes often.

So where did that leave the experiment ? Well I ended up keeping Rox as the desktop and including Thunar as file manager (it is at least half the size of Xfe / fox libs !!). You can see for yourself how it turned out by downloading LXP pup from www.puppylinux.ca/NOP site.

This is a 'one off' puplet which includes;-

Abiword 2.6.3 with working Ispell spell checker (the usual Abiword spell checker), working grammar checker and working equation editor.

Gnumeric 1.8.2
Xine mediaplayer (not gxine)
Opera 9.51 webbrowser/mail/chat/torrent suite with flash 9.048
Pburn 1.95
Dillo

A few apps have been removed such as;-
sane
gtkam
osmo
homebank

The orignal aim of the experiment was to see if I could make a more efficient puplet than the Xfce based NOP. The answer is an emphatic NO. Xfce when properly tuned / tailored does not add that much extra in terms of size than Rox / JWM and yet uses 10 Mb less memory and only 75% of the CPU resources and is noticeably faster. Icewm / lxp is similarly outperformed by Xfce.

Your rigour confirms what I've suspected about Xfce, gray! Based on my HW testing, I've been advising a switch to Xfce for just about everything. It is also far more intuitive for refugees. The only complaint I've had is about unskilled 'tuners' who don't have your skills and leave us with important settings manager components either missing or, in one case, the entire caboodle missing. You got it right first time!
Time to turn your obvious talents from LXP to LNX.

Well I downloaded and tried your LXP pup and well Its very nice and works well and for the size, It rocks. :)

The only thing That I'm not used to is all the system changes like thunar or the menu/programs etc.
Kind of reminds me of Myah Os, somewhat.

Still nice, But I'm still more for the icewm look, Great Job

Myah is one of those I had in mind - complete pants. An utter waste of everyone's time. Difficult to find anything worse. Now, pass me that Luger...

LXP aint too shaby - for a failed experiment.

Xfce is definately the way to go, though I might have a look at Enlightenment. Time to download Buddapup ?

Very nice effort! For some reason, it would never configure my DSL for network connect. The strange thing is, it reported the network settings as successful but in fact it wasn't. That's a shame cause you included two of my favorite browsers: Dillo and Opera! I hope you continue to refine this puplet cause it has alot going for it.

Maybe next try to get QVWM running, LOL I did and well I didn't configure it or anything, It just needed 3 libs, imlib-libesd-stdc++
Was easy enough to get, Basically it makes your system look and feel like windows 98, lol here's a pic what it looked like on dingo for the 5 mins I had it running. http://www.csg.is.titech.ac.jp/~kourai/qvwm/
