Abiword 1.0.2 A relic from the past download for series 3

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Before there was 911 or Puppy Linux, was Abiword 1.0.2,LOL (around 2001)

Basically I'm building a small Fire Hydrant release. I needed a Word processor so basically I used Siag PW, because the person I was helping found Abiword really slow, I went looking around and found Abiword 1.0.2 compiled as I386, So I said why not try it. It was missing 1 lib, After that it booted perfectly, The whole package is 4.5MB and It doesn't need Goffice or any other Gnome files. This would be great for someone using fat-free who just needed a no frills Word processor.
It does run very quick and it still does .DOC and .RTF and other and comes with a USA spelling dictionary :)

Hey ttuuxxx

I am the type of person who rarely uses anything more than leafpad /geany.when I have to use windows I use bloc notes wordpad /editpad lite

and a small fast basic word processor is nice to have
when you want to save or read from different formats
for those who have a need for speed

thanks ttuuxxx :

YOu probably will want to try the 1.0.7 version -it was the last of the GTK1-compatible versions. You can find sources, build-script and a Slackware-11 package here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ord-1.0.7/

One level up from there you'll find other editors. I haven't uploaded my recent siag stuff -I even found a way to egon going. But I have an old package and the sources, etc. here:

Hey ttuuxxx,

Siag Office is not turning out to be a real good option for me in these cut down distros... can't change fonts or font sizes... dunno why, still looking for a fix in both your quick tiny 3.01 and PULP.

However, I saw this Abiword and would love to try it. Unfortunately, as you know, .ca is gone.

If you can get it to me I'll test and post this Abiword.

Thanks,
Sully

Edit: I see ttuuxxx put a new link up a few posts prior to this one, THANKS!

UPDATE: This works like a Champ on ttuuxxx's 3.01 Retro Lite. I'm still trying to sort out some bugs in PULP. I think it may be an issue with versions since PULP is 412 based (4 something anyway).

Hey ttuuxxx,

Should this run on Puppy 4+?

Its awesome on 3.01 Retro Lite, but all kinds of crazy stuff happens when I try to install it in PULP.

Just curious.

Hi sullysat I don't really use 4 series , mostly 2 series and then dpup. But next time I'm running 4 series I'll see what I can do.

Its no big thing ttuuxxx I was just curious. I much prefer this little app on you 3.01 than on PULP anyway.

Just wondering where the issues actually are. Based on what's happening, I'm blaming the distro rather than Abiword.

Hi elraven,

I'm just curious why you chose to run this version of Abiword in 430, given that there is already a more up-to-date version of Abiword in that distro?

I'm not knocking the choice, just trying to understand it.

abiword 1.0.2

#10 Post by elraven »

hi sully :)
Hmm, you ask good questions . :D Well , i guest its the old school in me comming out. I was taught by some one really old school (one computer filling an entire room type old school) he taught me this. just because something is old doesn't mean you discard it. For me 1..0.2 is fast, does rtf etc, like ttuuxxx said . It's all i really need in a word processor and besides. there has far to much " grab it, its new and fresh" going on. I have a low end computer a compaq presario 5170, maxed out with 384 megs ram ( its top end). it's upgraded from P2 350 mhz to P3 450mhz. So that said, i'm always on the hunt for apps that are lightier or less resource hungery. there's always the cool factor too , as ttuuxxx might agree with. Sometimes, old apps that are light and fast are just so cool to pick up and use again. hope my answer helps you.

Thanks elraven,

I tend to agree with you, actually. Thank for the explanation.

Keep an eye on ttuuxxx's 214X rebuild if you're looking for low end options. Its almost ready for release and is just about the sweetest little puplet I've laid eyes on. If the 4 series works well on your hardware, this one should do really well.

I spend a lot of time reworking old hardware and finding homes for it, so I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
