Wireless on Intel Pro/Set 2100/2200BG

#1 Post by denizen »

I can't use my wifi/wireless device with puppy linux (4.0 or 3.01) because puppy cant detect it even when I manually select the drivers. My wireless device is an Intel Pro/Set 2100/2200BG (or so thats what is sez from the box). It's relatively old so it shouldn't be any problem as with nearly all intel devices I've encountered. [EDIT: clarified my problem.]

I tried manually selecting the appropriate drivers but Puppy linux still cant find my devices?

What are the alternatives? I'm quite new to linux much less puppy linux... But I do have experience using ubuntu since 7.04, but I can't say I that I know enough to be able to confidently tweak puppy myself. Btw, wifi works in ubuntu but I do need a back-up boot drive (USB) incase I mess up doing something to my OS. [edit: clarification.] But at the moment I don't have a linux OS on my laptop since my HD is pretty small to fit 2 OS and have all my WinXP apps.

NdisWrapper perhaps? If yes, please show me where I can get it. I'm quite unfamiliar with puppy's community.

I am using a Toshiba Centrino laptop (M35X-S311) which has the 2200BG
pci card built in. Puppy 3.01 picks it up on bootup. When I type in this on the desktop "Console" this is what I get:
------------------------------------------------------
# dmesg | grep -i 2200
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.0k
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
ipw2200: Detected geography ZZM (11 802.11bg channels, 0 802.11a channels)
unionfs: do delay copyup of "ipw2200.ko"
-------------------------------------------------------
the above dmesg message from the kernel shows that the kernel picks up the wireless pci card and the module it uses is "ipw2200.ko"
Using the console again to see if the module is listed (lsmod) as loaded it gives this message:
----------------------------------------------
# lsmod | grep -i 2200
ipw2200 134576 0
ieee80211 33864 1 ipw2200
firmware_class 9600 1 ipw2200
-------------------------------------------------------
I use the RutilT wireless gadget to login (menu/network/RutilT)
use the "Site Survey" tab and scan then choose the site you wnat to login to then "connect" when you switch to the "link status" tab you will see a value in the IP Address window which should indicate you are connected. If the above is not listed like mine is you might open a console again and try typing
--------------------------------
#modprobe ipw2200.ko
----------------------------------
this will load the ipw2200.ko module then try the RutilT wireless gadget to see if it works. If you know another module is loaded instead of the ipw2200 you should remove it first
---------------------------------
#rmmod [modulename]
or
#modprobe -r [modulename]
------------------------------------
then load the ipw2200.ko module
