:) Was able to chat briefly with Charni in India.
Charni is one of the advocates and providers of Gizmo.

Charni assure me Gizmo works on modem between India and Canada
So good news for those with limited bandwidth . . .

William has created 8MB - Mini-Gizmo

Go Gizmo
Go Puppy

OK managed to talk to William Mcewan (mcewanw) in New Zealand -
- he is using dial up . . .
He could hear me OK and 90% of the conversation was OK :)
On occasion he sounded robotic (unintelligible) and eventually we lost the connection :(

London - New Zealand,
I wonder what sort of route finding was going on :)

voice packet loss from modem connection

#4 Post by mcewanw »

Yes, I could hear Lobster as clear as a bell. But much of what I was saying back was not making it back. I guess the difference is that Lobster was using broadband and I was on dialup and the network traffic has a long way to go between here an London so data packets can easily be lost and corrupt the transmission.

When I dial gizmo itself to record a voice message, the results are much better for some reason. I presume that second connection is between NZ and the States, which is probably much more direct.

I should also try running gizmo on a faster machine. This one is only a Pentium III, 500 MHz one, and I'm not sure how that effects transmission quality if at all.

I'm not really sure why broadband should be so clear in comparison, since I would have thought the data rate for voice was pretty low anyway, but maybe the codec used is only just able to compress sufficiently for dialup, such that if the data rate of the modem falls even a little, data packets start getting lost. I'm just guessing though. It would be good if it was possible to try different codecs with gizmo - anyone know anything about that?

The reason I'm a bit surprised at the loss of voice packets from the modem side, is that nine years ago I had a voice+video call between NZ and the UK using only a 33.6 kbps modem and Microsoft Netmeeting, and that wasn't too bad at all (the video lost frames quite a bit, but the voice quality was quite reasonable); and that machine was just an old Pentium 233.

success with modem call

#6 Post by mcewanw »

I moved to another machine, used Puppy Dingo instead of Puppy 2.17.1 and called up smokey01 in Darwin (so not so far from me in NZ).

This time the call was fine, not broken up, but clear (I was using dialup modem and smokey was on broadband).

This other machine actually has slightly lower specs (Pentium 3, 450 MHz), and it has a different modem. I don't know if the distance improved things so much, or the time of night, or the modem, or the version of Puppy I was using. All I know is that it worked quite well (I could hear smokey fine, and he said he could hear me okay too). That is a relief! I was beginning to think gizmo wasn't going to work well enough for me on dialup.

I'm happy to confirm the conversation with William was good, in fact very good. It was clear, no noticeable delay or echo.

mini-gzmo-project-libstdc++5

#9 Post by charnisingh »

Hi all,

i have been testing mini-gizmo-project-complete with GConf2+orbit-2-req.libstdc++5 and found it OK.

1. tested in puppy 2.14-OK

2. tested in puppy version 3 fatfree (this was upgraded from 2.14) but it does not have a browser. report OK.

3. tested in puppy 4 fresh install report OK, but gave error message
when touched preference button (something like GDB not in your system,
can not debug and it crashed)

all the three times only Willson was available on line so have to
disturb him, but i could not understand him fully because of his accent which is
different than Indian accent. otherwise sound was OK.

in nutshell this version can be called "mini Gizmo-Project-universal "as this can be used in all most all the puppy versions.

it does not crash in puppy version 2.14 and puppy version 3 fatfree. and it is only about 7 mbs. including GConf2 + orbit-2.

Charni.

As far as I know (according to a conversation I had with Caneri) I managed to get my sound quality sorted out in the end. Only once, when I re-entered the conference, I had messed something up in alsamixer and it had gone "robot" sounding/clicking noises, but as far as I know, it was fine at other times. The only way I know of checking (apart from feedback from people listening) is to record an answering machine message (which is apparently sent in real time to the gizmo server) and if that sounds clear probably the voice transmitted is reasonably clear when phoning others.

Earlier in the day when trying to phone Lobster, I hadn't mastered the recording controls on my machine at all, and thought my problem was caused by dialup transmission speed, but now I think it was all to do with sound settings and the version of Puppy Linux I was using. Gizmo seems to work fine with modem dialup rate. However, I've discovered that the version of Puppy being used makes a BIG difference on my machine at least. The sound quality is muchos better when using Puppy 4.00 than Puppy 2.17.1 (which I was using in my first few attempts with gizmo voice chatting).

I could well be wrong though... maybe it became clear but remained robotic, or maybe if Lobster visits Scotland he'll think robots have taken over... ;-)
I'll need to check with Caneri and smokey01 since the conversations I had with them were the most fluent sounding. Everyone sounded slightly muffled in the conference itself.

Most of the time I have been missing the Skype day, now Gizmo day. I am work during the times everyone else is on Skype or Gizmo.

Today during the lunch break, I got into Gizmo from my personal laptop and added the contacts listed on Lobster's page to my Gizmo. But I had to logout as my lunch break was over..Lol.

Hope to talk to some of you soon.

Yes I feel the voice mails are very useful

To check your messages
Go to dialpad and click 611 with the mouse
One of the options will allow you to record an 'answering machine message' also (that is what all the weird sound effects are for . . .) 8)
