No more mathpup .... considering Archlinux livecd (Update 1)

#1 Post by cb88 »

Well as you see in the topic I will not be making mathpup its just too much trouble... instead i plan to build an Archlinux based distro.

reasons:
No fortran in puppy4
Arch is already multiuser
Arch is using aufs
Arch has stable and tested livecd build utilitys while the ones i have used with puppy have needed tweaking in my experience
I don't have to compile every thing although i intend to update some Arch linux packages if i can figure it out (im sure i will)

I may still release packages for puppy such as R if a fortran compiler turns up or i just just rob the one from puppy 3 if it works might not....

hopefully i will have as much fun building my Archdistro as i did mathpup... and learn a thing or two on the way :-)

So anybody wanna suggest names?
im thinking Hyperbolix for the final release and Chaseix on the betas (I'm sure that my math teacher will LOL)

hopefully i can get started on it by then end of the week and get a beta out in a month ...we'll see!!!

also I am going to list packages in this thread so here goes this is mostly for my reference:
Abiword http://www.archlinux.org/packages/180/ http://www.archlinux.org/packages/181/

Built initial test livecd with xfce + R and removed firefox and tunderbird

R was tested to function properly

Rox ( minimise to desktop panel pinboard and filer) and Openbox (root menu and window manager)will be the default gui

Should have news if that configurations is working from the live cd by tomorrow it does work from the HD

you said No fortran in puppy4
Umm have you installed my Gslapt 4.0 and typed in fortran ?
I have and it installeds in seconds, Plus of course all the added Slackware Packages that can be used on 4.0
sure some things need to be installed but its all done automatically .
Gekko also went the Archlinux way, I like it here, its a nice community, not too big, not too small, just right.
Well have fun Its been nice having you around.

Gslapt 4.0 is here, Just if you wanted to try it out on dingo, it works great

Hi cb88,

Do you mind if Math pup stays on .ca?

I'll delete it if you wish...but maybe additions with your new work would be better.

Suggestions or directions please?

Best,
Eric

@caneri it is fine if it stays there

@ttuuxxx who said i was leaving? I still use puppy i just don't feel it is the right distro for my purposes atm.

Also if i have no intention of using gslapt.... in puppy imo that would be a last resort esp since puppy4 is a t2 distro... barry really should have put fortran in the sfs not like it is bloat or anything in the livecd

2nd progress report:
upon trying to run a desktop other than xfce i ran into a small problem
it should be resoleved by next week since i don't have access to the box to build it on i can't test it though untill then basically my /etc/X11/xinit stuff is not 100% configured correctly it may even be a bug but I'm not 100% sure need a little more research there this test image was 270mb

well you can easily edit the .sfs right?
the just download fortran source from http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/gnu/gcc/gcc-4.2.2/
compile it and add it to the sfs and you should be good to go.
you can use "Edit-SFS (squash filesystem editor) "
from here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 41&t=12112
it really works nice :)

Also the fortran commands are listed on this page.

Glad your not leaving

hmm

well i have had trouble with getting rox and openbox woking so for now i am just gonna stick with xfce although i my wack out thunar for rox...

i have these working:
r
octave
abiword
gnumeric
vlc
firefox
sylpheed
galculator
genius
nmap
wireshark
wicd
xfce4.........etc

the next thing to do will to be to add in the theme i want and of course a special wallpaper... thankfully i figured out where the configuration files for xfce are at in the prebuilt filesystem overlay

i am considering blacklisting some things like man pages and at the very worst the dev tools since they can be downloaded later... but it would be really nice to be able to use it as a quick compile livecd

oh and the bootloader... i need to change the background

We have supported Fortran in the past
http://dotpups.de/menno/GraphApp/WrapGraphAppEng.htm

Just as a side note. In the early days of Puppy it was considered a support or intro to more serious distros
. . . if a project works better on Arch or Ubuntu - use it.

Gradually people tried more and more things with Puppy
Some surprising

Yesterday I was using XP on a laptop (it crashed and refused to boot incidentally)

Why is fortran still used? It works
.
eh . . ramblin' again. Good luck.

I thought that only Puppy 3 was slackware-compatible, and only for a specific slackware version.

Is it just happenstance that this worked?

I think a maths sfs would be a good idea, comprising programs such as R and octave.

check out
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=49517

Also I think it would be a great Idea to have some
math / science / engineering stuff available in sfs or pets

Some of this software packages are hard to install / compile for the average user. Puppy Linux is small and installs easily, so if somebody wants to try out if a special package is usefull you could make an easy install in Puppy Linux.

Also it could be nice to have a working math/science work suite available on an USB stick. You can go to work/classes with your personal tools available anytime - no need to go to a specific Lab or workstation where those are installed

With the debian-based woof build under development (dpup), will it be possible to simply apt-get the latest version of gfortran, octave, R, or anything else from the debian repository?

R, Octave and Maxima as well as Gretl, Yacas and Geogebra are working (testet for Puppy 4.31, see this thread

Also very interesting, I found this thread about SAGE, which is on of the most comprehensive math tools today. Obviously they tried to make SAGE work in Windows, by running a SAGE Puplet in a Virtual machine!
Has anybody here tried "Puppy Linux"? I stumbled upon it yesterday,
and have become quite enamored of it. It is systematically optimized
for being "small" (e.g., using squashfs and unionfs very
systematically), and provides a full GUI. It's a lot like "Damn Small
Linux", but is twice as big (base system is 100MB instead of 50MB) and
much, much prettier. It's also somewhat easy to install a compiler
environment into (once you figure out how). I was able to build Sage
from source on it, no problem, since our binaries didn't work
...
This quote is from William Stein, one of the prime creators of sage. A perfect reference for puppies math-capacities!

Although they switched to a minimal ubuntu in the meantime I guess it is a good reference about Puppy Liux cabability as a tech platform. This supports my believe that Puppy Linux is a powerful base to distribute complex software.
