3 like machines, 3 different results (Solved)

#1 Post by peppyy »

I am having an issue with one ibm thinkpad 600e in puppy 4.

I have upgraded 3 machines now, all 366 pII and 2 fly.. One however reports the CPU to be running under 100mhz. All 3 report the same processor and 2 report full speed in hardinfo but this one is as follows.

I have set all bios settings alike, the fan is running and the cpu seems cool enough. It used to fly on 1.09 ce which was the 2.4 kernel.

Is there a chance that something was detected incorrectly in Puppy 4 or is the processor just dying?

Thanks

It's not a direct answer to your problem, but you might find useful background info on cpu frequency settings in the thread How to keep your cpu cool and your fan quiet.

Thank you erikson, I am not certain but I have been checking and it may have to do with the specific bios revision on that laptop. I am looking for a way to flash it without Window$ but it looks like I need to download the exe and create a floppy, for which I will need both Window$ and a floppy drive.

I am fairly sure it ran ok with apm instead of acpi but I don't believe that relates to this problem.

If the bios upgrade does not materialize, I will attempt a cpu transplant. According to the motherboard specs, it will support a PII mobile mmc1 processor up to 400mhz. still verifying that for sure.

" There it talks about my use of the IBM Thinkpad 600.

I recomend Puppy whole heartely on that laptop...go for it.

That being said, I did have issues with the bios "

" Thankfully I found a site that had a link for updating/flashing the bios. It turned out that was the key. You could, of course, download the floppy-bios-update creating file from the manufacturer's website, transfer it to a bootable cd (since I didn't have a floppy drive) but thankfully this guy on this site had done it for me already. " OK... I fixed it, and since others would like a easy fix for this, I created them for you guys.

This is IBM Thinkpad 600E, that has NO floppy drive and a DEAD battery.

I created a .iso that is a 98SE Bootdisk CDRom (corrected for this purpose.) It also has the files for the Bios Update. "

Well, why not give it a try and boot with setting acpi=off...

cthisbear, I actually found that post last night in the forum at wimsbios and checked it out. I ended up with a webpage when I downloaded the link from the site even though it was labeled .mp3 When I opened it in a text editor that was all that was there. I figured the filesize of 37k was way too small. The direct link seems to be missing and replaced by a sponcer page.

erikson, I tried many boot combinations last night and it seemed to make no difference, I also found that there are settings in the bios that are grayed out on this machine which work fine on the other two, making me believe that is the problem. I do have a floppy drive but no cable, and the other problem is that floppy is one of the items that is not available in the bios.

I think my best option is to attempt a bootable cd and hope for the best. I believe I can create one with puppy if I dig deep enough. (Yes I dislike window$ that badly lol It is only because I work on other peoples machines all day though.

I dug out an old win98 machine and created a disk with nero, (Bootable Data) using the files from the floppy and updated the bios with no change. Just finished the built in tests for memory and such and all passed so I am guessing it is the processor itself. I will look up what support I have available. probably only MMC1 .

If anyone wants an iso file for the1.16 bios let me know, real easy to make.

PM me with your email.

I have the 2.8 meg ISO file I kept after searching.
No Guarantees.
Maybe someone can tell me where to upload it.
I know there's a sight but I cannot remember it.

Thanks Chris, I too have an ISO that updates correctly.

Out of curiousity, I decided to clear the cmos, by removing the memory and removing all power sources for a while. Upon reboot I got the expected errors, (161 and 163) which let me know it worked. I set the clock and a few other settings, Rebooted again to the new bios and I have 363.9MHZ again.

Happy Puppy.

Thinkpad 600 work with Skype? 300 MHZ 128MB RAM

#10 Post by jplagarde »

Hey guys, reading your post I have to ask .. I just bought a Thinkpad 600 off of ebay its a model 2645-45U .. I believe its 300 MHZ, and its got 128 MB of ram. Does anyone have experience running skype off of a 600 with these specs? I am worried because I bought it for Skype, and I read that the Linux system requirements were at least 600 - 1000 MHZ.

That being said its running great off a a 600mhz 128MB machine I have now.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Ah last question,

what's the cheapest way to get the 600 connected by ethernet that works in puppy? a USB or PCMCIA? Don't want to spend a lot since Its a cheap computer.

Thanks!

I have had great luck with the 600e's I have not tried skype with them yet but once the A:SA sound is setup I can't imagine why it wouldn't work.

I would pick up a cheep wireless card myself 11b if you have wireless available. I find the linksys cards work in the newer puppy, wpc11 cards are around 15 bucks on ebay.

or you can pick up a PCMCIA Ethernet Card fpor about 8 bucks like this one

Best of luck with your new toy :) I just found a 600x for 40bucks I am gonna setup next.
