Nice to see Mary Lou Jepsen's design for a $75 machine getting plowed back into the main project. (Mary Lou is the designer of the display and she used to be technology chief of the original project.)

@Raffy
Yep
Pity it's not being reflected in the price of all HMPCs. [Handheld Mobile PCs]
It seems Acer/Dell & Intel are forcing a new niche market for HMPCs,
which are priced as sub-$500, which is a huge hike from the mooted $100 that became $200 for the first EEEPC
More power to MLJ, as you say!

Yes I think we in the developed world have all been nicely conned over small, cheap laptops.
The brand leaders must have been horrified by the idea that laptops could be provided for $100.
But bring out a slow, small screened version for $300 and quickly follow with a faster bigger screened version for $600 and the price is back up where the brand leaders think it ought to be.
A credit to whatever Mba dream't it up.
Regards Tony

The Geode LX700 used in the OLPC project (in its first XO release, 4th quarter of 2007) is not slow when using Puppy Linux.
In fact, Puppy Linux runs well in the Geode 433 (with the BIOS set at 333 mhz) - this was abandoned by OLPC as it was too slow for the "Sugar" interface.
However, the market longs for the 1 Ghz or more processor, as many people could not believe that anything below 1 Ghz will work to their satisfaction.
AMD was too slow in advocating the wide use of its Geode processors - perhaps it acknowledges the limitations of its bulit-in 2D graphics engine? So now enter Intel's "Atom" processor with 1 Ghz+ speed.
Many Puppy Linux regulars use a Pentium III or its equivalent (the eeePC and Classmate PC are P-III equivalents at 600+ mhz).

We would like to test Puppy on an OLPC Version 2 Subject description: Will Puppy work on this? |
|
The OLPC Version 2 seems very well suited for travelers as well as school kids. Is there a way to get one to test before 2010? Will Puppy Linux run on it?
Thanks,
