Should include memtest86 in puppy 1.0.6

#1 Post by PeterSieg »

Hi. I think a memtest can be very handy on the puppy live-cd.

Just needs a bootable binary of memtest86 (app. 80kb) and an entry
in isolinux.cfg

Code: Select all

label 9
  kernel memtest86
that's it...
pressing 9 will start the memory tests...

I have just done this here on my local image...

PS
Have fun :)

Being able to test your ram _before_ you boot puppy would be handy if somethings not working quite right.

a memory checker must run stand alone

Hi Barry.
Menu:

Start -> Control Panel -> Memtest test RAM
To my experiences, a memory checker must run stand alone, outside of
any other operating system...

PS
Have fun :)

PS
Peter,
yes, you are right.
Puppy's checker is a compromise, only checks the free ram.

I'd like to vote for this -- Memtest86+ is the best! Assuming you can spare 80K in the base image...
But my top priority would be for FrameBuffer to be included in the default Puppy. When first-time users cannot get a usable video display on their laptops, they will give up! But again, I don't know how much precious space this would take up...
