Thanks for bumping it Aitch,
Only just seen the Ham radio comment . . .
Have joined the forum mentioned
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/puppy-linux/

Here is nic2109's announcement:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29430

We have had and will again have Puppy users in disaster areas Crying or Very sad
I am trying to get people used to VOIP with Puppy Skype day
Another user has just provided an Open Source VOIP and this is another potential tool as Skype is a bit of bandwidth hog

Communication options would seem to be a key requirement . . .
Smile

Aitch, I use it in Muppy 0083, so it should work in Puppy 3.
I did not test Puppy 4.

Thanks Mark, the reason I asked was in forward thinking for inclusion in the potential DisasterLab CD - 'StBernardPuppy?', to be used at times of natural/other disasters, to get PC/comms up & running across language/boundary barriers, in times of great human need

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=4185

Is anyone testing on Puppy 4?
Do you know what BarryK's views on international support are?

Aitch

Sub_title: Red Cross Info

the software that the Red Cross used to use is called DROMIS (Disaster Relief Organizational Management Information System). used this software about 10 years ago, runs on win, and its fairly bulletproof. Rather than go whole hog and re-invent the wheel, i'd ask ARC for a copy and see if it could be integrated via automatic WINE.

Lobster, et al

This just found;

http://www.linuxjournal.com/video/linux-journal-live-oct-2-2008

just to give an idea of scale for disaster b/w

I recently met a couple at a conference who are involved in a disaster support ngo capacity

Biggest problem, they said, was responsibility: no-one in local government/police/ambulance/fire could give stats for people movement plans & they needed to be able to security prioritise comms to different groups/co-ordinators over the same network, and wanted to know about encryptioning data sends/saves, with a heirarchical admin structure giving access on a need to know basis

They are interested in St Bernard Puppy concept & also how can it supply wifi or other network links like OLPC project does?

Is there satellite/3G support?
& conferencing/whiteboarding/filesharing ability?
Can it be sent over network to run from harddrive if no CD writing capability is available [i.e. as thin client?]

Can anyone supply an overview of development &/or direction?

pm me for more details

Aitch
