Hello Shadow,

well it depends on which stuff you've downloaded, maybe where you've downloaded it from, and perhaps which pupversion you're using.

If you've downloaded a .pet or a .pup, you should be able to click the program to install it.

If you're talking about a program that's been compiled for another distro, it might work, depending upon the compatibility with your pupversion. But it's best if you provide more specific information.

Well, according to the site it runs under:
CentOS, Debian, FreeBSD (server-only) , or Ubuntu.
Not sure if that means it will or wont work with puppy at the moment, but i assume that because theres no .pup version of Skull Tag, then its not a simple process.

Im sure some one can explain to you how to try install it :D

In time someone might put a .pet (installable) together for the game . . .

.pet is our latest software packaging system - a part of Puppy 4

Major packages here - OK the ones I might use here:

I have 3.01 working albiet not yet completely to my liking but that will come with time.

I was going to start a thread similar to shadow's but will ask my question here.

I want to download/install Gpredict. The website simply says:

Unpack the source package with:

tar -xvfz gpredict-x.y.z.tar.gz

Change to the gpredict-x.y.z directory and build gpredict:

./configure
make
make install

My questions are:

1. Is there a specific directory to which the package should be downloaded?

2. When the package is unpacked does it create the gpredict-x.y.z directory or is that the answer to my question 1 i.e. make that directory and download the package to it?

3. The configure, make and make install steps does what exactly? Does it create an icon on the desktop, include the program in the menu, etc., etc?

Alternatively to Gpredict, have you tried Mtrack, a graphical satellite tracking and prediction program?
Try searching for mtrack_0.3-3_i386.deb. Use undeb to unpack, then place the modules into their respective folders within Puppy. Then download the latest TLE file, update the prediction, and log the satellite you require. I use it for watching the ISS. It works very well, even on an old 333 mHz machine with 256 megs of ram.
Good luck.

Fossil,

I have previously used Orbitron but now that I am using 3.01 I am looking for something similar. I found Gpredict following another thread on this forum.

Thanks for the reference for mtrack. As a newb I am still looking for the answers to the questions I posed in my post above however.

@shadow,

this is as far as I've gotten. I downloaded this file, clicked on it, and extracted the two files, skulltag & skulltag-server.

Then i ran ldd skulltag, and this showed I was missing one library file, libfmod.so. I downloaded this from here, and saved this to /usr/lib directory. Now ldd skulltag is showing no missing libraries, but if I try running skulltag from the commandline, I get:

Code: Select all

# ./skulltag
Skulltag v0.97d - SVN revision 1266M - SDL version
Compiled on May 13 2008

M_LoadDefaults: Load system defaults.
Cannot find skulltag.pk3
What's a skulltag.pk3?

Hi Shadow

Maybe you should [also, maybe you already did] post to the Skultag forum

let them know what's going on & tell them you are using Puppylinux & see if anyone else has succeeded

They may even have the answer to muggins' question, if you don't know?

http://skulltag.com/forum/

Looks neat, good luck

@Mercedes350se,

I've uploaded a .pet of gpredict here. I've compiled this in pup4. I haven't tried it in pup3, but it should work? If not, post any errors you get.

What's a skulltag.pk3?
The site says to install the Linux base
http://skulltag.com/testing/public/st-v ... se.tar.bz2

skulltag.pk3 is in there. I guess its the game file like a doom.wad

@2byte:

yes I figured that it might be in this file but, being on measly dialup I'm not going to download an 18M file just for the exercise.

@shadow,

have you downloaded this file? Does it contain skulltag.pk3? If not, then it's probably best to post a query to the skulltag forum, as Aitch suggested.

http://zdoom.org/wiki/Using_ZIPs_as_WAD_replacement

Apparently .pk3 is a sort of zip file.

yes, it includes additional game-data like maps and new grafics.
pk3 is a renamed zip, that follows a strict rule how the folders inside it are named.
Similar to dotpups.
But you don't unzip/install a .pk3, this is done automatically at runtime by the game itself.

To play a Doom-engine, you usually need doom.wad from the shareware or full version.
And sometimes as here, another .wad or .pk3 with engine-specific addons.

Thank you for the .pet for gpredict. I downloaded, double clicked on the package and received a message saying it was installed.

Restarted X server as specified then Menu>Utility>gpredict

Nothing, zip, zilch.

Found gpredict in /usr/bin but again nothing.

Where to from here?

Probably some missing library. Two questions. If you open a console, (Menu->Utility-Rxvt), & enter the following 2 commands, what responses do you get?

Code: Select all

gpredict  <enter>
uname -r <enter>

@Mercedes350se,

I've re-uploaded gpredict, compiled on pup3.01.

@ muggins

Thank you for compiling for 3.01.

Bear in mind this is all a learning curve for me so, given that I have files from the previous compilation throughout my machine, do I have to remove them - in their entirety - just remove the .pet download, or what before downloading the 3.01 version?
