Invite SystemRescueCd?

#1 Post by Greatnessguru »

Puppy developers,

Would it make any sense to invite
SystemRescueCd
http://SysRescCd.org/
to be based on T2/Puppy?

I'm not a developer, but I did burn
SystemRescueCd-1.0.3-beta12,
Beta-x86
http://sysresccd.org/Beta-x86
"SystemRescueCd-1.0.3-rc1 available:"
last night, Linux-2.6.25.04,
and it works. I have used
previous versions for a few years.

I also now use Puppy 4.00,
and have tried a few previous versions.

I see some overlap in the goals
and approaches of both projects,
and some common weaknesses.
Examples:
- Portability
- Hardware detection/support
- Kernels
- x86-i486 compiled, stock system
- Documentation
- Internationalization
Exceptions:
- T2 based, Puppy only?

With Puppy already based on T2,
I was wondering if a:
T2 based
> Puppy based
> SystemRescueCd
made any sense,
and if any Puppy developers have,
or could make, contact with the
SystemRescueCd community?

I have a Mac G3 PPC, and would love
to have current PPC ports of both projects,
but cannot expect duplication of
such efforts, or for other targets, either.
T2 does help with that, though. Right?

Thank you,
Eddie Maddox

Puppy and Gentoo

#2 Post by prehistoric »

Hi GG,

System Rescue CD is built with the Gentoo Portage build system, which is extremely powerful, but far from minimal. This is a good source for the latest versions of utilities common to Puppy and SRCD.

Leachim is building Puppy-like systems using Portage. You can check his progress on this thread.

I've only read some of it, but sounds like somebody is having Fun!

I guess I'm wondering/worried about all these distros out there
that all have their own package/application repositories,
and how is an application author/project to
publish/"distribute" their releases to every "distribution"
on the planet?

I was thinking maybe if all the FOSS distros adopted one
of a very few build systems (T2, Portage, that Debian thing, ...),
then application projects could just "distribute" their
releases to that very small number of build systems,
and thereby achieve "world domination"?

Thanks,
Eddie Maddox
