While I really appreciate the extra efforts of the experts in the forums who try to accomodate us rookies by making dot pups upon request, I would really like to learn how to install other Linux programs (i.e. games) that are readily available online. But my lack of understanding of Linux file structure is my problem. I'm using Puppy 1.0.5 live-cd and am trying to install a game called Xgalaga Hyperspace. It's a variation of the one available as a dotpup. I've downloaded it to a folder (Program Files/Linux/Games/Xgalaga Hyperspace). I've unpacked/unzipped it and then used PupGet package manager to "install alien pkg". But I guess I'm not choosing the correct folder/file because it keeps telling me to "Try again, choose alien package". What is wrong with my procedure?

This is some work.... http://www.goosee.com/puppy/development/package-management.htm

It might be easier to make a dotpup.
Try to get a rpm or deb -Package.
Extract it to a temporary folder (unrpm xxxx.rpm).
You must install unrpm first using the Dotpup-Pckage Installer.

It is important to look, if there is a folder /xxx/FILESYSTEM/usr/share/pixmaps
You must delete that, or your Dotpup can corrupt your Puppy heavily (I will add a check for that in future versions of the Wizard).

I have known Yogis - even someone given this name by his parents. I have even been a Yogi myself Cool

. . . but to other games.

here first for gamers howtos

The first, second and third times I got Linux working (Slackware, Redmond Linux and Knoppix) I espected to just be able to install software. It ain't so. Just because it is available does not mean we can access, compile, sort out dependencies and basically operate as if we have 20 years of Unix experience.
It is getting better, simpler and easier.
Most distros have installable packages of software that sort out dependencies and libraries. The frustration for Windows users is that installing is easy because in effect there are only several types of OS (operating system). So Linux is a pain in comparison. My advice is long term learning.

This though for Debian, is all about dependencies

Good luck Smile

One day you may need a source code search engine

Thank you Lobster. In one post you've answered many of the questions I've been accumulating for the last five months. Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be a steep learning curve for me. I think I'm looking forward to it.

p.s. Anyone up to making a Dot Pup out of Xgalaga Hyerspace?
