@CatDude: I have the files I had downloaded from your link to a new link on my website. You can check it out here.

http://tipsforeveryone.com/puppyrepo

You can also contact Caneri on this forum who is very helpful and hosts most of the Puppy software and derivatives.

IMHO the next step is a nice splash screen while Puppy is booting up with the progress messages appearing in a window. Sorry to say this, but "just like Ubuntu" applies here.
Pleased that you like it. :D

If all you want, is to just hide the bootup text and have an image displayed instead, 8)
then maybe Pizzasgood's Pebble would fit the bill.
But i suspect you have already looked at it.

CatDude
.
I've looked at the Pebble thread, but not tried it because it modifies the initrd.gz and specifically uses the Puppy 3 version.

The great thing about your package is that it works with GRUB and so is independent of all installations.

Hello all!

I am gonna give this a whirl but I want to be sure of the proper steps before I take the plunge...

I have backed up a copy of the menu.lst file and saved it to my USB stick :D

At step 3 (Re-install Grub) do I:

A. Simple Install
or
B. Expert Install

I tried Simple and then was presented with 5 options:

1.Begin Start Grub config w/new Grub header.
2.Linux Add Linux part to Grub conf file
3.Other Add DOS/Win etc...
4.Install Install Grub
5.Skip Skip or exit menu

I chose 4 but was presented with the same options.I then chose 1 and was presented with the same options yet again. Hmmmm.... :?

Am I missing a step here? I am a newbie but willing to learn  .

Thanx in advance.

Juan

CatDude and prit1,

OK, I click on the link to tipsforeveryone.com/puppyrepo and it seems to just go into a load then reload loop.

Prit1, is this what you meant earlier by it being broken from all the edits, or something else?

So, if it is not broken, any suggestions for what may be wrong? I am using my windoze box and firefox while on the internet. Not as safe as puppy, but I can read on the windoze box while working on the puppy one.

Thanks, Chris.

Hello Meshica7 & wolfwatcher51

@wolfwatcher51
Using seamonkey in puppy, i have no problems going to the site.
It just goes straight there and i can see all 16 files.

@Meshica7
What version puppy are you using, and what type of install.
If you let me know i will try the same, and see what happens.

I have a bit of an odd issue. I'm using Pupeee (based on Puppy 3.01) on my VIA ML-8000 mini-itx box. It is a frugal install. I downloaded and followed the directions. The odd thing is that the line "gfxmenu /boot/grub/message.pup1" causes my computer to go into an endless reboot cycle. As soon as Grub starts to load, the computer reboots. If I comment out the line "gfxmenu /boot/grub/message.pup1" and uncomment the line "color light-gray/blue black/light-gray" then Grub loads and the computer boots. It is of coarse the old blue Grub screen though. Here is my menu.lst file.

Code: Select all

# GRUB configuration file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'.
# generated by 'grubconfig'. Sat May 10 10:59:35 2008
#
# The backup copy of the MBR for drive '/dev/hdc' is
# here '/boot/grub/mbr.hdc.3826'. You can restore it like this.
# dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.hdc.3826 of=/dev/hdc bs=512 count=1
#
# Start GRUB global section
timeout 10
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
#gfxmenu /boot/grub/message.pup1
# End GRUB global section
# Other bootable partition config begins
# title DOS (on /dev/sda1)
# map (hd0) (hd1)
# map (hd1) (hd0)
# rootnoverify (hd1,0)
# makeactive
# chainloader +1
# Other bootable partition config ends
# Linux bootable partition config begins
  title Pupeee Linux (on /dev/hdc1)
  root (hd0,0)
  kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0
  initrd /boot/initrd.gz
# Linux bootable partition config ends
#title Install GRUB to floppy disk (on /dev/fd0)
#pause Insert a formatted floppy disk and press enter.
#root (hd0,0)
#setup (fd0)
#pause Press enter to continue.
title Install GRUB to Linux partition (on /dev/hdc1)
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0,0)
pause Press enter to continue.
title - For help press 'c', then type: 'help'
root (hd0)
title - For usage examples, type: 'cat /boot/grub/usage.txt'
root (hd0)

I dont understand how you get the above options.

I also have a FULL install of Teenpup 2008 (on hda5)

The following images demonstrate the sequence of events i did AFTER INSTALLING my .pet package.

In each case the highlighted selection is what i chose

Image
Grub Bootloader Config

Image
GRUBCONFIG

Image
CONFIGURE GRUB TO USE FRAME BUFFER CONSOLE?

Image
Grubconfig: SELECT GRUB PARTITION (Obviously yours will be different. i assume /dev/hdc1)

Image
Grubconfig: SELECT GRUB DESTINATION

Image
Grubconfig: HARD DRIVE MBR

Image
GRUB INSTALL SUCCESS

After that i then go and edit the menu.lst
by copying from my backup copy
EVERYTHING below and including

# Start GRUB global section

I ALWAYS leave the top 6 or so lines as they are (those refering to the backup copy of the MBR etc)

As you can see, i do not get the 5 options that you described above,
so i am at a loss as what to suggest next.

Maybe try re-installing my .pet package, then re-install GRUB

Sorry i cant be of any more help, i am just as confused as you.

That is weird, i have never had that happen, so dont know how to help with that im afraid.
Maybe someone else might be able to shed some light on it.

In actual fact, you dont need to comment out the colours at all,
heres the GRUB global section from my menu.lst

Code: Select all

# Start GRUB global section
timeout 30
default 0
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
gfxmenu /boot/grub/message.pup13
# End GRUB global section
This works as intended, that is, with a nice image
but if there was a problem i think it falls back to using the colours.

Catdude,

Man,that is strange  .I do not get those options at all.In fact,I only get the ones in the screenshot below.Whichever option I choose,I am shown the same options again, like it's caught in a loop or something.

I did re-install the pet package before I tried Grub again.

BTW:The screenshot shows that I chose Expert instead of the Simple install.I tried both with the same results.

Well,now we are both confused :? !

Maybe someone might have a clue as to why my Grub config is looping like this?

Any time I uncomment the line "gfxmenu /boot/grub/message.pup13 " I get the endless reboot loop. This is regardless of whether or not the line "color light-gray/blue black/light-gray " is commented out or not.

@ Meshica7

I love your new Avitar. Can I use it in Pupeee?

I am completely baffled mate, seriously,i aint got a clue whats going on there. :? :?

I have installed my package in several different puppies now (all on their own partitions)
both FULL & FRUGAL installs, and re-instaling GRUB has always followed the same routine as i described above.
In each case, i have never had a problem, i just amend the menu.lst add the message.pup? to /boot/grub
then reboot and it works.

@dvw86
Again, i have no idea what is causing your problem, hopefully someone will read this
and help clear it up, other than that im as much in the dark as you mate. :? :?

Sorry i cant offer anything else, but i am not a GRUB expert,
lets hope one comes along and enlightens us.

dvw86: Of course you may use it! It needs to be cleaned up a bit but at a smaller size it looks ok.

catdude: Thanx for giving it some thought bro.I am baffled as well.I think it has more to do with my install than it does with your pet packs.

I am sure that a solution will present itself. They usually do around here  .
