Re: Singh-Dingo

vito wrote:Hello to the developer of Fire Hydrant,

I have used your version together with TMXxine on an old AMD 750MHz box with 336 mb memory. I have been intrigued by Charni-Singh's remaster of Dingo.

However, A. his iso is corrupt and his save file interesting, and B. Due to his circumstances of a slow connection and power outages, he seems to have lost steam and initiative to go forward with his plans to remaster the Dingo final version.

Question: would you consider looking at what he has done and the apps he has included to make a new version of Fire Hydrant based on the Dingo final release with whatever kernel version works for you?

By the way all of the versions of Dingo worked for me right up until the SC version when the wireless drivers changed and stopped working, also, I have been unable to boot the .21.7 kernel version of Dingo.

Thanks For Your Work in Bringing Out Fire Hydrant,
Vito
Hi Vito

I've been testing dingo and find that it has a few major issues before I will release a Fire Hydrant on it, If you been reading the dingo 4 bugs , it looks like it will have a quick update to patch the problems. Once that happens I will be more than happy to release a Fire Hydrant 4.0 :)
But I do have a 3.01 retro testing version that you can try, Lives doesn't work right, well no version of lives works on puppy right, but I did come close, lol
This version of Fire Hydrant is my latest and is just a couple of weeks old.

enjoy and report back on you likes and dislikes so I can move ahead with it.

I am struggling with firehydrant on a laptop with unusual video hardware (Toshiba Presage 3110). I found on the forum http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 6&start=15
that I am not alone in having the computer hang while probing video hardware on old toshiba laptops. There is a fix available which is in the Beta Puppy4 version which I tried. Could I request that this fix be incorporated into the next (eagerly awaited) version of firehydrant. I would love to run firehydrant on the toshiba laptop but but for now will be content that it is running puppy 3.98.
Hi here's the deal you get me the fix and I'll include it in a lite version for your older pc's.
just post the link
thanks for all your great feedback

flash on puppy

#43 Post by vito »

Dear Prit1:

I am not interested in naming all the versions of puppy that I have used or to get into a shooting match about the virtues of Puppylinux. The first book I ever read on linux was an online version in the early to mid "90s" written by none other than Barry K. when he was teaching and pondering his ideas on what would make a solid version of Linux and things that were annoying him about present versions. Needless to say, I don't have much use for versions of linux other than Puppy. (and I've used many)

Let me just say that for some reason on my AMD 700 or 750MHz box 336 mb , Nividia 64mb 440x box "flash do not want ta work correctly!"

Further, this problem is not new to many as has been attested to by the many posts that I have read on this subject across the puppy forums.

Perhaps this is a problem of my hardware and hardware like mine. It is ancient using MMX and 3dNow technology. However, I'm still hopeful.

@vito: You may be right. I only have access to 2 laptops . So I cannot be sure that Puppy plays Youtube well on all types of systems.

What was the book you read? Do you happen to have a link?

Barry's Book

#45 Post by vito »

Prit1:

I am surprised that this book is still available, and while searching for it I came across a hard cover programming book on low-level 16 and 32 bit languages by someone named Barry K as well (still in print and OVERPRICED)$78.00 U.S. looked like a textbook.

This is a link to the linux book by Barry: " Linux and Me"
http://www.goosee.com/linux/index.html

his old website is at : http://www.goosee.com/explorer/index.html

Have fun, Barry is quite an interesting fellow.

on this page http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 522#188522 is the link to the fix which is a 25.5k file. Hope including it works out - I found out about it because it is in puppy dingo but I would rather run fire hydrant :)

Thanks

Hi I'm not sure which version you wanted for your laptop here's the 3 versions in question
Fire Hydrant 3.01c FH_Jwm3.01c.iso 117MB <--- this uses JWM as the window manager

Fire Hydrant 3.0b featherweight3.0b.iso 131MB <---- this uses ICEWM as the window manager

Fire Hydrant 3.0b FHmainAbi3.0b.iso 205MB Abiword <---- this uses ICEWM as the window manager and has java and a few extra appliactions

The reason I ask is because you stated "FHmain with Abi (117mb) version" the FHmain is 205MB and the FH_Jwm3.01c.iso is 117MB
If all you needed was the patch on the FH_Jwm3.01c.iso 117MB I could easily do that and upload the fixed version but if its the FHmain 205MB version that would take some time since I want to upgrade that version with 3.01
thanks for your time

Feedback on the lastest firehydrant

#50 Post by recycler »

Overall - excellent - the older versions looked good - this one is superb with a crisper look and feel and lots of improvements. Nice icons and excellent graphics. You have added the things I missed - namely with inferno I couldn't manage to open a pdf file - this does it straight away - and photos open with a simple image viewer instantaneously. The fire hydrant machines I set up at the recycling centre had cards as an add-on for firefox, mt paint, frogger and freecell added on - now they are already included! Thanks. :) Looking through the menus I can also see there are many useful programs I've not tried yet. By the way the test machine for this is a Compaq laptop, Presario 2500, which I returned to life after it was discarded by our local computer shop. Pentium 4 processor, 512mb of ram. Thanks Jeff for your work on this excellent puppy. :D

wifi

#51 Post by vito »

Hello All:

Whereas, most 3.01 versions of puppy and the dingo 3.86 versions could connect with my dlink pci card using the atheros drive , this newest testing Fire Hydrant sees and scans the network but refuses to connect.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thx,
Vito

testing 3.01

#52 Post by vito »

In order to get the wifi woking I upgraded the system with TMXXINE from fire hydrant testing. Now the wifi not only sees the network it connects and uses DHCP for IP. IT is using WEP encryption 64 or 128 bit 10 . hex.

This still keeps the hydrant programs and graphics.
Mny Thx ,
Vito

Hi Vito

Which version of Fire Hydrant are you using?
Are you using the one that this forum is made for? "Fire Hydrant 3.0" 192MB
or are you using my latest testing beta?
http://www.puppylinux.ca/ttuuxxx/firehy ... -retro.iso

If your using the 3.0 192MB version I could give you the links to the missing files

If its the 3.01 retro beta, I'll have to look into your problem :)

wif connection problem

#54 Post by vito »

Hello Again,

Yes, I was using the 3.01 retro testing, here's the catch - have used the previous fire hydrant 3. and fat free, however, I don't remember if they had the connection problem or not.

All I know is that TMXXINE 3.01 is able to connect, so by using TMXXINE to upgrade the network drivers, I was able to once again connect.

Thx,
Vito
