Why are you surprised, Aitch? All the competent staff decamped from BT when the wicked witch privatised it. They continued to sink further down the tubes when Tone appointed his old Oxbridge buddies to Ofcom, who allowed them to rack up a £25bn debt. All the while the service is terrible, their charges are appalling and it doesn't work much of the time. The entire edifice came to the company gratis - such incompetence takes real skill.

I reckon it'll take nations about another century (two in the USA?) to realise that infrastructure is mission critical, that efficiency is a myth and irrelevant, health/welfare/transport/comms should be nationalised and that punters need to put their hands a lot deeper into their tax pockets to support it, whatever the cost. The alternative is why we have the present mess. We can't afford to have greedy capitalists cream 20% off the top and disappear to the Caymans. But first we need honest politicians prepared to tell the electorate the real cost of fish. Beware of flying pigs.

Yep, remember BR?
We are reminded daily.
Only a lunatic would employ an Establishment toff with a degree in Law or ancient Greek to run anything in an advanced technological society.

I'll get on to ordering another few million straight-jackets.

Sage ..... I agree with you ... and the US doesn't have even one decade to change directions but .... that's not important .... inquiring minds need to know why one of our presidential candidates wasn't wearing his lapel flag pin (which probably would have been made in China and contained lead) to the TV debate. As for the "real cost of fish", we can't agree on the real cost of corn ethanol as fuel which has far fewer inputs. It's not just "greedy capitalists" that skim and head to the Caymans. A lot of other '-ists' money meets there too.
