Fatdog sfs file for Puppy4 Dingo. Updated 4/17/2008

Here's your chance to turn your little Dingo puppy into a FATDOG.

This sfs file includes:
Applications:

blender-2.45 ......... 3D modeling and animation .......... http://www.blender.org/kino-1.3.0 .......... Video editor ..........http://www.kinodv.org/
gimp-2.4.5 .......... Image editor .......... http://www.gimp.org/

Other stuff:

freealut-1.1.0
gettext-0.16.1
glitz-0.5.6
gperf-3.0.3
gst-plugins-base-0.10.14
gstreamer-0.10.14
Sun's Java jre-6u5
libavc1394-0.5.3
libdv-1.0.0
libexif-0.6.16
libice-1.0.4
libiec61883-1.1.0
liboil-0.3.12
libraw1394-1.2.1
libsamplerate-0.1.2
libsdl-1.2.12
libsdl_console-2.1
libsdl_image-1.2.6
libsdl_mixer-1.2.8
libsdlmm-0.1.8
libsdl_net-1.2.7
libsdl_pango-0.1.2
libsdl_perl-1.20.0
libsdl_sound-1.0.1
libsdl_ttf-2.0.9
libsndfile-1.0.17
libwpd-0.8.12
neon-0.26.4
openal-0.0.8
openexr-1.4.0a
python-2.5.1
qt-3.3.8 (libs only)
complete Xorg (provides hardware 3D acceleration)

Notes:

* These packages have been cut-down by removing the include files, localization files and the man files, so don't try to compile against them. Also OpenOffice only has the English dictionary installed.

* By default Puppy loads it's main file system into RAM on boot. Some of these applications like LOTS of RAM. So for best performance, booting with the option pfix=noram may provide better results.

* Java's runtime environment is included. To enable the Seamonkey pluggin, from Seamonkey click on Edit - Preferences. Then click on the word "Advanced" (don't click on the + sign) and check the box to enable Java. Restart Seamonkey.

* The desktop Icons for write, calc, and paint will use OO-writer, OO-scalc, and Gimp when the sfs file is installed.
All of these packages where compiled in T2 or Puppy Dingo (except Java).

To install a SFS file, place the file in the same place as your pup_save file, then go to Menu - System - BootManager and follow the instructions there. Then Reboot.

It's called fatdog for a reason, it's 203MB. Big thanks to Eric (Caneri) for hosting the file.

http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/kirk/Fatdog/

I'll be out of town for a few days, don't know if I'll be able to check in.

Edit: In the address above you'll find to sfs files fatdog-4a.sfs and fatdog-4b.sfs (207MB). The fatdog-4b.sfs file is the same as the fatdog-4a.sfs except the latest flash is included along with openbox window manager and lxpanel. See below for details. Also see warning about switching between sfs files below.

Edit2:
So just to be clear:

Fatdog-4a.sfs --- Contains all the stuff in the quote box above. JWM is still the default window manager.

Fatdog-4b.sfs --- Contains all the stuff in Fastdog-4a.sfs plus Openbox, Lxpanel and the latest Flashplayer (9.0.124.0). When you boot, Openbox will be your window manager.

Looks nice
Just a petty that the Caneri hosting provides a slow connection. (25KB/s)
Well a bit like ibiblio.

Great package. I had to make a few symlinks for libraries in /usr/X11R7/lib to /usr/lib, but other that that, looks good.

No, tested (and using) in Puppy 3.98. The files I symlinked were /usr/X11R7/lib/libGLU.so.1.3.060502 --> /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1 and /usr/X11R7/lib/libglut.so.3 --> /usr/lib/libglut.so.3 - These were the only two I had found so far. They were needed by a couple of games.

Yes, that's going to be a problem sometimes, when using programs not compiled in Dingo. Most distros are putting Xorg in /usr. Puppy is still using /usr/X11R7, which I do like. Puppy 3.01, being slackware based wants eveything in /usr, though I think Barry but the Xorg stuff in /usr/X11R7 and symlinked it. The games I've tried so far haven't had a problem. But sure wouldn't hurt to have the symllinks.

The bottleneck is not his site.

I downloaded fatdog.sfs at 900 KB/s from Caneri's server

Thanks, good to know. Indeed I just did a download of the wine pet at 140+KB/s
Will not be easy to find the bottleneck. Maybe crossing the ocean is a problem.
And you, rarsa, are connected directly to his server maybe. 8)

Hi Beem,

I have a thread to report speeds and problems on my server here

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28167

I will send this link to my host so they can monitor the problems in real time with the comments from many countries.

EDIT: by the way...great work kirk...well done!
Thanks,
Eric

Made another sfs file, fatdog-4b.sfs (207MB). This is the same as fatdog-4a.sfs except I've added Plinej's excellent openbox, obconf and lxpanel packages, for more info on these see:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 57&t=25118

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 57&t=25185

Also added Nathan F's hacked blinky and freememapplet. Big thanks to those guys. Installed the latest Flash Player, thats the reason for the weight gain. Now when you boot with fatdog-4b.sfs installed your desktop will look like the attached screen-shot. If you remove the sfs file you'll be back to the normal JWM. The reason for adding this stuff is JWM has a bug which prevents Gxine and Flash from full screening correctly. No problem with openbox and the latest Flash9.

Note: The task-bar is invisible after booting until you click on it. It's a minor problem, but if anyone knows how to fix it, let me know.

thanks Eric, thanks Kirk :)

Hopefully we will soon have Dingo Beta 2
to try out the new BigDog . . .

I have been using the presentation manager in Open Office
The Mac version of OpenOffice requires a machine with
512MB - which I don't have (the Mac came from Freecycle.org)
- so I come back to Puppy on the x86

Bigdog+ Dingo Beta on the Eeepc will be my next test all
going well

Sorry guys,

I realized that I had messed up the .desktop files for OpenOffice. The files are back up now.

Warning: If you have fatdog-4a.sfs loaded and you want to switch to fatdog-4b.sfs:

* Use the BootManager to remove fatdog-4a.sfs and reboot.

* Use the BootManager to install fatdog-4b.sfs and reboot.

If you try to remove the old and install the new with out the reboot in between, the setup script will get messed up.

I'll try and fix that in the future.

@lobster.
Is it needed to wait for beta 2 to use the fatdog?
Why won't it work in beta 1?

Hi guys,

I had to look in properties and fill in the exec box in owner to get fatdog-4b.sfs to run.

That is a good practice for security...thanks kirk

Best,

No, should work with any Dingo so far.

Eric, I don't know what you're referring to.

Hi kirk,

The sfs would not be recognized by bootloader until I changed attribs to exec in owner.

Must of happened when I uploaded it. Didn't think that would matter though. Anyway, just got on your site and changed it.

Thanks again for the hosting!
