Puppy 4 Beta Bugs
The mysterious and destructive unionfs (?) problem discussed in the threads below still occurs in Dingo.

When the problem occurs, no programs can write to the pup save file. Some larger programs (seamonkey, geany, gxine) will not start. Smaller programs, like Leafpad, still work. You also cannot modify files in the pup save layer with ROX. I've found no way to return a corrupted pup save to normal. When the problem manifests itself, I can kiss that file goodbye.

Swap partion not recognised & soundcard autodect is BAD.
Like in the alphas, pmount doesn't see my Linux swap partition. I never had trouble with it in Puppy 1.x or 2.x.
I just found that if I switch pmount to use the MUT2 engine, then it shows the swap partition, but doesn't know what it is, and gives me a mount button, which doesn't work of course.
I just realised how stupid I was. The reason I have to run the alsawizard every time I boot, is that Puppy automatically configures my ONBOARD sound card, but I am using a different PCI soundcard (I think someone else might have pointed this out before). In my opinion this behaviour is VERY BAD. If I set up a card with the alsa wizard, and choose to save the settings, then they should actually be saved, not ignored because Puppy is too smart and automatically sets up something else again.
Hotpup is pretty cool!

Swap partition
disciple,
I think your swap partition is being used. For some reason
pmount doesn't see ( or report ) it.
In puppy 3.01 pmount has a nice entry:
Swap partitions
Currently in use /dev/hdb5 500M
This does not appear in Dingo Beta 1.
However in puppies 3.01, 3.96, 3.97, & 3.98
in /tmp/bootkernel.log every one in line 227 says adding swap
and in /tmp/bootsysinit.log everu one in line 1 says loading swap.
I think it must be a pmout thing - either a bug or a decision.

I have had a couple of seamonkey crashes. I was busy typing a comment for this forum and was switching to bbc site and listening to live streams.
[edit] The BBC site caused the most crashes, but also on other sites clicking on seemingly harmless links caused some crashes.
- Youtube full screen doesn't work.
- BBC streams (radio) don't work 'out of the box', you need to select gxine as default player. Not a big deal for me, but I guess it can be confusing for beginners.
- BBC streams (video) don't work at all. Probably a codec issue, but IMHO this should work out of the box. BBC is always my first check for stream capabilities.
The BBC player streams do work btw. The issue is with streams opened by xine.
- Junk filter support out of the box would be nice (not a bug of course)

Sometimes it's possible to see that a swap partition is working when cfdisk & Pthing aren't responding by inspecting its entry in GPartEd. If it's in use, it'll be locked down. Furthermore, often it cannot be unlocked with GPartEd and swapoff may not work, either.
The sooner we can persuade Jesse to finish up on MUT2, the sooner we can all get back to business. At least BK has earmarked it for inclusion, again.

Guys, please note that I am working through this thread, solving problems one at a time, or implementing something that you have fixed. I won't necessarily respond here though, but to my blog.
For those who have the problem with Puppy shutting down without saving the first session, I think that I know what the problem is. I'll announce that on the blog too, after thinking about it some more.
Things are moving along! We are knocking down one bug after another, nothing has really stumped us so far!

T_B, I'm like you, one of the first things I try on a distribution is to play BBC streams. None of them play them 'out of the box', not even Ubuntu, my reference distro.
For Puppy 4, I have installed Xine, with its mozilla plugin. I find it much better than gxine. To play BBC streams I have had to install Mplayer and its plugins too. Works fine.

xwin crashes from gxine media player
Every time, I try to play a CD using the built-in player in the docking station by using Gxine (media player), the xwin crashes. The computer returns to console. The audio adapter (built-in) is OPL3SA2 - Yamaha OPL3-SA23 based on system information summary. The memory size is 96MB.
Testing Puppy4Beta on another machine (AMD Athlon XP on a K7SOM+ MB by ECS), it does start correctly with Xorg, i. e., HotPup displays all drive icons at the bottom, the first-time help tab appears at the top and the double bark is heard; thus there must be some kind of hardware incompatibility. Not so with Xvesa, requiring to restart X just as with the former PC (prev. posts p.6-7).
Same behavior with either X server when trying to set a different number of virtual desktops -- "New config corrupt. Keeping original".
MhWaveEdit seems more prone to hang than ever before - even OGG files, which were usually played smoothly, may block it beyond hope. It does continue to run in the background even if killed, reboot needed.
HotPup (once started) is a real gem, never to live without again: kudos to Dougal & Pakt. It contributes to the overall feeling that Puppy4 is making another giant step forward.

petget and not enough disk space: Suggestion
In this threat,
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 0&start=30
it was suggested that petget should improve its way to estimate the free space to install new packages. I am not sure whether the present petget version in Puppy 4beta assumes correctly the blocksizes of the files and the filesystems. I suggest minor changes to the code which -I think- could improve the free space estimation.
Hope it helps

Code: Select all
EXPFREEB=`stat --filesystem --format=%f /` #no. free blocks. (1 k blocks)
EXPFILEB=`stat --format=%b $APKGNAMEEX` #no. blocks. (512 byte blocks)
### EXPFILEB=`stat --format=%b hplip-2.8.4.pet` #no. blocks. # test pet
# EXPNEEDB=`expr $EXPFILEB \* 2` #bz2 can expand up to x3, need twice temp space
# . v3.01 changed 5 to 3. v3.92 changed to 2.
#note, probably better to do like this: EXPNEEDB=$($(($EXPFREEB*3)))
BLOCKFSSIZE=`stat --filesystem --format=%s /` #filesystem blocksize
BLOCKFILESIZE=`stat --format=%B $APKGNAMEEX` # blockfilesize
EXPNEEDB=$(($(($EXPFILEB*6))/(($BLOCKFSSIZE))*(($BLOCKFILESIZE))))

Thanks for the advise. I will wait for the next update before trying it, I'm having problems saving my first session.DreamsToGo wrote:T_B, I'm like you, one of the first things I try on a distribution is to play BBC streams. Puppy was the distro with the best out of the box experience for me, but since I own an eeepc the Xandros version for eeepc has become the standard.
Everything works out of the box and a boot time of less than 30 sec!

The problem with JWM configuration saying "New config corrupt. Keeping original", has already been addressed by BarryK. Check Barry's blog and this thread.

Menu/System/Hardinfo...->Computer Summary crashes this app
As the subject says, when clicking Summary under Computer in System Information obtained from Menu/System/Hardinfo hardware information, the Hardinfo application crashes immediately without any additional information. This thinkpad has 4G of RAM.
Update: This problem seems like is associated with restarting from a saved puppy session. I saved this with heavy encryption. Later, I deleted this and restarted fresh. The crash problem disappeared.

Dotpets on Puppy 4 Beta 1
Hello All:
Puppy 4 Beta 1 looks great, and works great, but I can't install dotpets (*.pet) that worked great on Puppy 2.16 thru 3.01 inclusive. Seems like I have dependency issues (library related??) on all these.
1) xpaint-2.7.0 : PETget Package manager message is:
........HOWEVER, these dependencies are missing:
File /usr/local/bin/xpaint has these missing library files:
libXaw95.so.7 .......
It creates the menu entry but can't run
2) Both qucs-0.0.13-i486 and qucs-0.0.14-i486
(I am the "packager" for QUCS on Puppy Linux, my "claim to fame")
I installed qt-3.3.8.pet first from repository ibiblio.org, OK.
PETget Package manager messages are:
........HOWEVER, these dependencies are missing:
File /usr/local/bin/qucs has these missing library files:
libqt-mt.so.3
File /usr/local/bin/qucsedit has these missing library files:
libqt-mt.so.3
File /usr/local/bin/qucshelp has these missing library files:
libqt-mt.so.3
File /usr/local/bin/qucstrans has these missing library files:
libqt-mt.so.3
File /usr/local/bin/qucsfilter has these missing library files:
libqt-mt.so.3
File /usr/local/bin/qucslib has these missing library files:
libqt-mt.so.3
File /usr/local/bin/qucsattenuator has these missing library files:
libqt-mt.so.3
So I tried creating a symlink (muggins suggested this in an earlier post) http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22591
but got same results
3) openoffice_cutdown3-2.2.0.pet (from repository ibiblio.org)
Several (different) dependencies. It creates the menu entry but can't run.
4) fldigi-1.34-i486.pet also same results. Was available from
http://www.w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html
Any suggestions?? Otherwise Puppy 4 Beta 1 looks very promising.

Finally got around to trying Hotpup (saw a lot of talk about it, but didn't know what it was before now)
So, when I try to apply the settings, it says it failed to apply the new mode, and restores the old one.
Maybe this has been brought up here already, I didn't really look, but I will later... good idea with hotpup...
