Thanks kindly for all your work here Big_Bass! I'll try to remember and install this later on when in Puppy.

A few months back I tried doing it from GSlapt and ran into the proverbial "dependency hell" and after spending 45 minutes to an hour copying over libfiles from the hard drive---you guessed it!---I ended up with a segmentation fault! But such things don't upset me. It's only software.

The codecs are installed to /usr/lib/ , is this intended?
Other packages usually use /usr/lib/codecs/ or /usr/lib/win32/

No, not intended

I first tried the codecs folder and it wasnt working
so I placed them in usr/lib to test if that would work and it did

I fixed a few things and maybe it could be cleaned up a bit and the codecs placed in usr/lib/codecs now

I did test this with many formats and all but realplayer 10 worked
the codex is for real 9

this was quite a large program to get working and I will clean it up if I can
thank you for taking the time to write and poking in the program

please let me know if you find anything else thank you
your the best at making things work you have the largest collection of dot pups and pets
and I use them frequently so your suggestions are valuable to me

no extra codecs added, same codecs as on the mplayer page, just in .PET instead of tar.gz

This mplayer for me crashes with an illegial machine-instruction error (I get that in german).
Puppy 3.01 (Muppy 008.3).

Does it work for others in Puppy 3.01?

The other versions work (108, 1rc1, 1rc2unichrome).
1rc1 currently works best for me.
1rc2unichrome gave me some popups I did not have a closer look at yet, will try again later.

I like to see additional versions of applications made available, but more so if their features are noticeably different to those already available.
Case in point: forum member tombh compiled a version of MPlayer1.0rc2 with specific Xorg tweaks for CompizFusion support -

In particular, I would like to see a version of MPlayer compiled against a shared ffmpeg library, since recent versions of Puppy now have the ffmpeg library. Forum member disciple hinted at doing this.

MPlayer is not really sensitive to different kernel versions. It's much more sensitive to different versions of GTK2, that's why I compiled my version under Puppy 2.12: this has an older GTK2 so later GTK2 versions should remain compatible. In fact, I just installed my version of MPlayer now in Puppy 3.02alpha1 and it works great.

Your codec compatibility list is good, but I see 3 important codecs missing:
- RealVideo10 (drvc.so)
- Theora (the only truly opensource video codec)
- 3gp audio (for mobile phone video)

And there's no DVD menu support, which was a significant feature of the RC2 release.

Regarding extra codecs, I continue to be bemused by the "warm-and-fuzzy" or "mystical" feeling of confidence these codecs seem to engender amongst users who are confused about the different video/audio codecs available.
The extra codecs pack adds a whopping 22MB worth of files, with little real benefit apart from the 1 genuinely useful Windows dll - drvc.so (RealVideo10).

WindowsMedia9 is now supported by MPlayer's internal ffmpeg library. The Windows dll is not necessary.

Yes, the configuration options are confusing here, and possibly faulty. The correct location for Windows codecs is definitely /usr/lib/win32/ but the configuration script will fail to find these codecs unless you use this config -

That typically happens when the MPlayer configuration automatically sets CPU optimisations for the machine on which it is compiled. If your compiling machine is a Pentium4, Core2, or CoreDuo, then this will likely create problems with lesser CPU's. The solution is to compile with this -

Thank you for writing and for your comments and suggestions
and also because you have done many great things to make puppy better for us all
and thank you for that too.

Many times I use a program or a script and it makes things easier for me because someone already did it and I can focus my energy on some other project or fix

I wish I saw that you made a pet of Mplayer . I would have used it then poked inside and investigate how it works ... sadly on my part I just downloaded your pet today and I am writing you before I try out your pet it could have saved me a lot of work

The main reason I am making some pets is because I made a striped down derivative
based on version 3.01( and my focus is on that alone at this point in time) and with the many versions and kernel changes in the official puppy version I wanted to insure that this Mplayer pet I made was built with just version 3.01 using the 2.6.21.7 kernel in mind

well, since I compiled from scratch from the mplayer main download site
this is an original work
and the most terrible part of it all is once I start doing something I have no mental rest until I resolve a problem and figure out how it works I wish I could change that part of me but I cant I just learned how to use that "flaw" to fix things

I will look over all the comments you made carefully
and make adjustments where and if needed

and then I wanted more formats available so after I made the Mplayer pet
and firefox mozilla seamonkey plugins pet

you first need to install that and set it up
then you can use Mplayer and the official realplayer 10 together this way
using firefox

In firefox top left corner Edit>Prefrences>Content>Manage>Highlight then Change action>open them with default application

tested the MPlayer 1.0rc2 in puppy 4 beta 2 and found it starts ok without
adding any extra libs but picture size in full screen mode is not full screen
it comes in middle all around there is black space. and that way vlc 0.8.6 givs
full screen picture wiew.. and in mplayer 1.0rc1 it cover full width if played in 16:9 mode only hight coverage - does not cover the tool and task bars.

Installed on Puppy 399 (4b2).
Tried succesfully a lot of different video formats.

I like (in difference to gxine) to be enabled to select the audio stream if more than one was included.

But on the other hand with gxine I am able to watch videos in fullscreen.

When activating fullscreen with MPlayer the window is maximized to fullscreen but the the video is shown with his native resolution in a black frame arround it. Panelsize of my display is 1920*1080.

I am running Puppy 4B2 with nvidia drivers:

Mplayer is not really sensitive to much at all. Every puppy package of Mplayer I've seen (haven't tried Big Bass' latest) works perfectly in Puppy 1.x, although obviously in some you have to install libSDL or libXVMC or ffmpeg...

but the the video is shown with his native resolution in a black frame arround it.

You get this with the X11 video output. To scale video you either need to use xv or xvmc output, to use your video card's hardware acceleration (often you might need to rerun the Xorgwizard and choose a lower screen resolution, or you'll just get a green window). Otherwise, to do software scaling, you can lauch Mplayer with an option that I think is -zoom 200 or something like that - the 200 is the scale, and it might be scale or something rather than zoom. But hardware scaling is much better, and many Puppy users wouldn't have a fast enough PC for software scaling.

Thanks for the info as you can see from all the info to set up Mplayer
its quite a large complex program the Mplayer I did was my first total compile of all source code since then I compiled it another time with some added features
and I am fine tunning some things I will try this new one I made on version 4 when its an official release I can say it doesnt have full screen yet on version 3.01
but its just a matter of some more tweaking just a quick note to let you know I am on it
and will re upload when I solve this if you find an easy fix in the mean time be kind and let me know

New problem with mplayer:
Although I have selected the SPDIF paththrough Decoder for audio - no sound. (Sound level of every mixer in mplayer and puppy is set to maximum.)

With gxine no problem: AC3 and DTS through SPDIF sounds very well.

Did the default audio work ?

I found this info for you but you need to test it

Get everything played through spdif output with mplayer. analog or digital sound does not matter, so you don’t have to change parameters if you want to watch to an ac3 movie or listen to an mp3 file. there are 3 parameters that do the trick:

mplayer -ao alsa9:spdif -ac hwac3, -srate 48000 somemovie.avi

-ao alsa9:spdif sends everything to spdif output;
-ac hwac3, if there is an ac3 stream it will be send in raw mode so your reciever can handle it otherwise “analog
