Firefox 1, 2 and 3 Subject description: Which is best? |

Which version of Mozilla Firefox is best? I notice Damn Small Linux used Firefox 1 for a while, but Firefox 3 seems quite fast too.

I usually use FF2, and am quite happy with it on a P700 with 1 gig of Ram.
I actually encountered crashes with flash 9 again, so I'll revert to flash 0.9.48 in the next Muppy.
I use Firebird 0.8 occasionally to visit malicious or buggy sites, when I don't want to risk, that they could crash my already opened FF2 with many opened tabs.
Con: FF 0.8 is quite usable, but encounters wrong CSS formating on some sites.
Pro: it seems to use less CPU resources.
Since I have the Orbit theme for seamonkey, I use that one more often, too.
I just wish the buttons were smaller.

One reason I used seamonkey so seldom, was the "outdated" look.

Well I've haven't had any problems with the latest Firefox 2 series, but the write-ups on the 3 series and what it brings is incredible, Its supose to be 3 times faster then the 2 series, and also the fastest full sized browser in the world, faster than Seamonkey, Opera, All other Firefox's, Internet explorer, Safari etc, I've tried it a few times and always had problems with the CSS formating, Maybe because its a beta, who knows?
So I personally will stick with the 2 series. Until the official release of 3, then I'll give it another shot.

Yes there are, But I would only do that on trusted websites, Some would says whats the odds? DSL does runs old versions of browsers. For the size factor.

Check this out: Firefox 3 goes on a diet, eats less memory than IE and Opera

Firefox 3.0b5pre is exceptionally fast, and uses memory much better than previously.
Extremely stable. No more crashing, with Flashplayer 9.0.r48.
It is as nimble as Opera now.
Not all extensions have been upgraded for it yet, but the most important ones have (noscript etc).
It may not run on all distros. I have had probs with it on several distros, and on Puppy2.
Runs well on Puppy3+4.
My vote: 5 woofs.

I find Firefox 2 is more stable and has a better CSS rendering than Firefox 3.
But on the other hand Firefox 3 is the fastest full sized browser on the planet, Its 4-5 times faster than Firefox 2. So its up to you,
FF 1 = Lots of security leaks, Not as stable as #2, not as fast as #3, Not really smart option for most.
FF 2 = stability
FF 3 = speed

Indic Unicode Fonts Render CORRECTLY Now |
|
Hello:
Up till the release of Firefox 3, ALL BROWSERS IN ALL THE LINUX DISTRIBUTIONS were (and still are) rendering "Indic Unicode Fonts" (Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi etc) INCORRECTLY. (IE renders them correctly, however)
NOW... Firefox Version 3 renders them CORRECTLY!
In a similar way ABIWORD, before the current v-2.6.2, could not render Indic Unicode Fonts correctly. Like Firefox 3, Abiword 2.6.2 has the capacity to render them correctly.
It may also be of interest to Indic Localizers of Puppy - that JWM and ICEWM do not render the Indic Fonts correctly. [Note: ROXFiler does the job perfectly]. However, XFCE-WM, with its Thunar File Manager (I am testing 4.4.1) renders them excellently. (I have not tried Enlightenment WM yet)
So, for Indic Puppies, FF3, Abiword2.6.2 and XFCE4 seem to be a necessity rather than mere choices.
Font Rendering by apps., was one of the prime blocks to Linux Localization in India. Now with Firefox 3, Abi2.6.2, and Xfce4 - be ready to welcome many Indic Puplets!!
BTW: For those who may be interested to test run Firefox3.0b5, here is the dot pet I am using (12.73MB). You may download it from the following link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/109493812/firefox3.0b5.pet.html
(Note: many lib files are said to be missing, so says the post installation warning note. However FF3 works without crash in my Puppy 3.01. Flash 9 also works. I am unable to compile a dotpet without these errors, so can anyone bring out a cleaner error free FF3 pet? Thanks in advance)

To ttuuxxx: Thank You very much for creating Abi 2.6.2 pet. Without it Indic Puppy Projects will take a little more time to arrive.
To JB4x4 - who created the nice XFCE 4 pets: Thank You very much for making these pets available. Your work is sure to help Puppy to make inroads into India soon.
