List your system

#1 Post by brymway »

If this has been done, can someone please link me to it?

Otherwise....I am always really interested at reading what each of you are running Puppy on. What's under the hood so to speak? I just got a new-to-me computer that I will run Puppy on full time. No more using the family computer to restart Puppy on for my sessions. On one hand I I'm uncharacteristically excited about the prospect of using all the discarded computers in the world to run Puppy on. It's like getting something for free while sticking it to the man. Not being victim of The Bill Gates Monopoly of System Bloat.
On the other hand, I would shell out the bucks for a brand new computer if it was dedicated to Linux, designed to run Linux and all Linux hardware, using Linux drivers. A Linux machine as opposed to a machine designed for Windows that will now run Linux. Stick it to the man again. But until then, I wanna hear what everyone is running on.

Mine: Compaq Presario 1800 Laptop
-Puppy 3.01 live cd saved to usb
-Pentium III 600 mhz
-256 ram card (but it's only registering 190)
-2 gig Sandisc Cruzer usb (with U3 uninstalled)
-Ethernet cable to Cable modem for internet. (Haven't got wireless working yet)
-20 gig hard drive
-NOT a dual boot machine. About 20 hours after I brought the machine home I used GParted on my puppy disc and formatted my hard drive erasing window xp from my existence. Stick it to the man. I havn't yet figured out what to put on the hard drive. Thinking about Vector. I want the fastest machine I can possibly have. But I digress
-Don't know what sound card is in there but it works. I can stream SomaFM thru gzine.
-Looking at puppy with 1024 x 768 x 24 Xvesa. Beautiful!!!

I had very good speed with various Puppys using a IBM T20, Pentium 800 with 256 MB Ram.
It just had no 3D, as the integrated Savage-graficscard had only 8 MB Ram or so.
Unfortunately the display has died.

A Toshiba Portege, P 500 with 128 MB is pretty slow with Muppy.
I just use it very seldom.
Puppy 108 runs better on it.
So I can use it on travels for some basic work, and to test my programs concerning speed on a low-memory machine.

My Desktop-PC is a Pentium 700 with 1 Gig Ram, booting from a CF-card.
Only Kernel/initrd are on the card, the other files are loaded from an external USB-drive.
It has an Ati Radeon 9250, that is pretty fast for typical games.
Only Doom3 and Quake4 are quite slow, but playable.

I currently see no need to upgrade to a faster machine, as it is very responsive for what I usually do.

I would recommend for modern versions of Puppy to use a P 700 with at least 256 MB. 1 Gig is a bit snappier, but not really needed.
Then use an Ati or better Nvidia-card (better concerning driver-support) that works in such an old mainboard, there will be just a limited choice.

Oh yes, my Monitor is an Acer TFT 22 inch, with 1680x1050 pixel, it costed 239 Euro.
My old one died not long ago.
This resolution is great for "work".
For games, my desktop-PC works better with 1024x768, the full resolution will be too slow as some quick tests indicate (I did not have time yet to play using the new Monitor).

Puppy machine

#4 Post by prehistoric »

Hi Brymway,

Welcome to the club.

Here's what this is being typed on:

Used Dell Latitude D600
  • OS: Usually runs Fire Hydrant 3.0.1c-JWM, but now testing Puppy 3.02 alpha
    CPU: Pentium M - 1.4 GHz
    RAM: 512 MB
GFX: ATI mobile Radeon C4011 (according to XOrg)
    14" 1024x768 LCD screen
    Onboard sound (so so)
20 GB HD/60 GB HD/4 GB USB flash drive, depending on which I've clobbered recently
    Matsushita CDRW /DVD ROM
WLAN uses 802.11g mini-PCI card with the ralink RT2500 driver
To answer detailed questions about my other machines I need to check on which components are in which cases and which working machines are on loan.

Displays range from a 15" Compaq CRT, for testing, to a 22" Envision flat panel, with a 21" flat-screen SGI CRT for high quality color. (I fear for my back when it is time to dispose of that one.)

prehistoric

p.s. Pizzasgood, I suspect you meant Matsushita
added: I should have realized you know how it actually sounds. Always a problem, whether to be correct or understood.

Well, actually I meant Matshita (forgot the 't'), but after a quick Google I see that that's short for Matsushita, due to hardware limitations. I just corrected my post.

Main server (as sig.) with 19" lcd. This and the Athlon get used the most.
Wifes machine PIII 500mhz running Gamepup live-cd with 17" crt
Daughters machine Athlon 950mhz running TeenPup live-cd with 15" lcd
Eldest daughters machine around 300mhz running W98 with 15" crt
All made mainly from cannibalised, recycled or donated parts
All connected to 2mb broadband. Printer is a HP Laserjet 4MV (Mac compatible)
Also have a donated 2.6ghz Celeron e-machine that dies after 10 mins. I think it needs a new mobo but there are a lot of cheap, nasty components in them.

IBM Thinkpad 600

#9 Post by maryhalloran »

Originally I ran puppy 1.0.8rl, and it was happy happy happy, altho I never have managed to get the sound to work. I couldn't get the video tweaked in enough to run 2.10, but I'm doing fine with 3.01. With 3.01, the usb works.

IBM Thinkpad 600
Pent II 298 mhz?
no idea how much ram, tell me how to determine that and I'll edit this post to reflect it.
I use a 2wire pcmcia wireless card, works flawlessly under 3.01
and even tho the trackbutton works under 3.01, I also use a logitech trackman wheel (with a ps/2 adapter, so I can leave the usb free for other peripherals.

I got this machine for free, and puppy has actually made it useful. I love Puppy!

There's a program called "Hardinfo" in the PETget repo. Shows lotsa fun stuff.

Or if you don't want to install anything, you could use Xproc. Not as pretty though.

Compaq Presario 5140 Desktop
Pentium II 400 MHz
224 MB PC100 RAM (expanded from 96 MB)
ATI 3D Rage LT Pro (4 MB vid mem)
8 GB fat32 HD w/Windows 98 first edition

I run Puppy 3.01 off the hard drive. It boots faster than Windows, but the overall system isn't much faster. There's a little bit more running in Win98, though.

I have about 18 computers last I checked but my main system is a Dell Inspiron B130, 1GB RAM, 1.8GHz Pentium M, DVD Burner, 60GB HDD. My primary desktop is a system I made from parts from tiger direct with a 400 watt modular power supply,80GB HDD, DVD-ROM,Micro ATX case, Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8Ghz. And for fun I have two Compaq Deskpro 200MMX, 96MB RAM,2.1GB HDD, no cd, systems up and running. All of my systems use DCL.

Very nice y'all. The spectrum is broader than I expected. 128megs-4 gigs ram? And Puppy rocks on all of them. I need to edit my system. This Compaq is now running FatFree 3.01 from the HD. I decided to load it on there. I was running Vector but then I stumbled upon another computer. So this one is running FatFree and I swear the sucker blinks it's so fast. It's also a learning computer as I'm relatively new to Linux. Yeah, so I picked up this laptop on craigslist for what I feel was a good price. But I'm a dumpster diver and I like to put the word out. So everytime I go to a different job I'll ask the guys if anyone has an old computer they want to get rid of? Well I lucked out. A buddy had a ChemBook laptop that he had downloaded too much porn and it took over and wouldn't run so it was sitting in the closet. He got another one and just gave the old one to me. As soon as I got home I popped in one of my Puppy cds and formatted the entire HD. It's got an Intel Centrino 1.50 GHz, I just put upgraded RAM in it: 1 gig ram, a six hour battery, clear screen, weighs half of what the Compaq does. So I put Vector on that one and run Puppy on this one. I don't know which one is faster. I'm happier than a pig in mud. Meanwhile our Mac and two Micro-nazi computers are over there taking up about 20 square feet of space, making a bunch of racket. I swear they sound like a mechanical room with all the fans and drives running. They are slow and heavy. Yuck. On more than one occasion I have had my wife and kids looking at my two computers. Maybe, just maybe I'll win them over.

I am here with a Dell Latitude D600 with an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 network card. I also often use a Dell Dimension 4100, which has worked for years with many versions of Puppy, large and small.
