Hello Everyone,
I believe the Gxine Player uses Windows Media DLL's to open Windows Media files.
Are these specially converted or are they just pasted so to speak into the program from Windows.
Can you copy DLL's from say Window XP and paste them into Gxine.
I don't think it would be that easy, I just interested in how it's done if anyone knows.
I'm told Gxine uses Windows DLL's , can any DLL's be used?

Yes, actually only the most recent WindowsMedia9 codec. Earlier WMV codecs are supported by the (Linux) ffmpeg library.john biles wrote:I believe the Gxine Player uses Windows Media DLL's to open Windows Media files.

Yes ... but the hard part is finding the dll you want (the one you want is wmv9dmod.dll)john biles wrote:Can you copy DLL's from say Window XP and paste them into Gxine.
Fortunately, MPlayer has packaged all Windows codecs here http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.h ... ary_codecs
And these have been repackaged as dotpups.

Hello MU and tempestuous,
Thanks for your replies, I already have the Mplayer and its extra codecs installed.
Just one more question.
Say Windows releases a new codec with Vista can I paste that Codec in the same folder as the other codecs and Gxine will see it and will then open the new Windows Media file?
Sometimes I have got an error message from Gxine saying it required a missing DLL, could I go and find that DLL on the net etc etc and paste it in the folder and then Gxine would open that file, is it that easy?
This has got me thinking, if Gxine can use Windows DLL's is it possible for another program that allowed the interface of windows "Drivers" with Linux allowing the use of devices such as Winmodem's, Printer's and other devices there aren't Linux drivers for.
I guess it wouldn't be easy or it would already be in use.

http://xinehq.de/index.php/faq#WMVCan I watch Windows Media (.asf/.wmv/.wma) files using xine?
While the container format (system layer) ASF (wmv is just an alias) is fully supported in xine, for newer windows media 9 based streams you'll need to install windows binary codecs (.DLLs).
Possibly the most convenient way to get the Windows DLLs is to download them from the MPlayer website http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html . The package is called "essential". Unpack it and move everything you find inside to /usr/lib/codecs (actually you can place them anywhere you want, e.g. someplace in your home directory, but then you'll have to set decoder.external.win32_codecs_path in your xine config file accordingly). Restart xine then and you should be able to watch windows media streams.
