XFCE 4.2.2 desktop for puppy official release

#1 Post by bombayrockers »

This is the official release for xfce for puppy that has come after much needed help from rarsa (who made the menu), MU ( got rox working with xfce and provided some important libs) and every else

for screen shots you are reffered to http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=2789

all indevelopment .pups will be released at the above link, all official releases will be made over here. general puppy users are advised to download from this section ONLY.

this dotpup contains the essential xfce desktop

desktop manager + window manager + some utilities ( system load mon, netload , volume control , battery mon)

i have also released an addon .pup for gPS (graphcal process stats) over here http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=2865

the dotpup for XFCE can be downloaded from http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?c ... 43xfce.pup

IMPORTANT -> you also need to download the xinitrc.pup from below ( a seperate dotpup for this file has been made because it is a important system file and so i dont want it to get deleted in case you uninstall xfce using pupget) this will ask you to overwrite .xinitrc click on ok

IMPORTANT -> please reboot before immediately after installation

HOW DO I START XFCE ? XFCE can be started by using 'xwin xfce4' (without the quotes).

HOW DO I START XFCE WITH ROX AS THE ICON MANAGER?
XFCE with rox as the icon manager can be started by 'xwin xfce-rox'

WHEN USING ROX AS ICON MANAGER MY ICONS ARE HIDDEN UNDER THE TASKBAR -> just drag down the icons into proper place

WHEN USING ROX AS ICON MANAGER THE CURSOR BECOMES A CLOCK?
SOLUTION -> if you want to disable that, right click each panel item, click properties, untick "Use startup notification"

Great work, thanks. So many choices now. This puppy is chasing its tail.

I prefer the Rox version.

Minimising files takes a while to get used to. It's a toss-up for me now between this and IceWM.

many many thanks bombayrockers, great pack !!! :D

I liked it very much, Xfce4 is light, small and gtk2 themable

it comes with a lot of beautiful themes but how to use the old Puppy themes and Barry's GTK theme script ?

I have an idea: to create in /usr/share/themes a new Puppy folder similar to the others but in place of gtkrc put a symlink to /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

it works, we can now choose a theme with GTK theme script and then choose "Puppy" on xfce configuration panel

for those who prefer rox icons on desktop and wants to gain space on screen some tips:

-remove most of taskbar icons, they are already on desktop

-disable xftaskbar by commenting it on /root/.xinitrc-xfce-rox (#xftaskbar4&)

-to replace it enable the taskbar plugin on taskbar and choose "expand to fill screen"

-configure Graphical Pager to show 2 rows

-and the other taskbar plugins according to your personal preferences

(see the screenshot)

I prepared two new menus to xfce4 users, one for default Puppy and other to Chubby. They show the icons's items on submenus also, someone may prefer this approach

yes puppy gtk themes using the gtk theme switcher was a problem.

that looks great.

AlienX can you come up with a tar.gz of the files you have edited.

also as you are working with gtk themes can you try out the plastig gtk theme (based on plastik) it is available on kde-look.org

thanks

X doesn't load when I type "xwin xfce4"

No error message or anything...it tries to load and then goes back to the prompt.

I looked in /usr/bin and found some other xfce files, but not the xfce4. I did find xfwm4. This worked.

error messages would be in /tmp/xerrs.txt
you can look at them in the mp editor
or you can copy xerrs.txt somewhere before you restart X, because xerrs.txt will be written over when X starts

Just as I suspected.
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/thor:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6
Could not init font path element /usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi, removing from list!

xset: bad font path element (#59), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

exec: xfce4: No such file or directory

waiting for X server to shut down
xfce4 is not there. But as I said, xfwm4 is there.

problem solved. I didn't run the xinitrc.pup file. Now "xwin xfce4" works.

This leads to a page full of ads, maybe your file was removed ?
