Which puppy version

#1 Post by kevint »

There are so many builds of puppy, barebone, one bone, etc. I am not sure which one I need. I am looking for a stripped down version that I would like to put on a mini PC (256mb sd ) so space is a concern (would like to have at least half the card free). Is there a version that has no multimedia, no games, no office products, I really just need a web browser, mysql, python. Is there a build that is that stripped down? or a version designed for a mini pc?

Thanks

Kevin

kevint mmmm .......yes

Expect to install the browser of your choice with pet-get *the built in program installer . light and fast is the theme you decide what you want to add a lot or a little and when updated programs come out you don't need a full upgrade just use the new pets from the next version a more stable and logical way of doing things

It is easy to add programs to puppylinux you can use the built-in pet get manager or use dotpups----> http://www.dotpups.de/dotpups/

Note: no scripts have been changed added plus is no detective work needed for debugging non standard scripts

That's the idea behind fat-free-pup I removed only the "extra" programs and programs that always need updating

version 2.17
http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/cus ... -2.17-.iso

check the cd with the md5sum command to verify all went well with the download

http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/cus ... so.md5.txt

version 3.00

http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/cus ... p-3.00.iso
http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/cus ... 00.iso.txt

some info and download
please read what was removed no secrets all programs removed are listed for everyone to clearly see before using fat-free as a base system or your own personal project

P.S I started using puppy because I wanted a USB flash install ,that was very fast and very upgradable now I got it :D

I tried your version, it burned to a CD and booted just fine, but when i tried to use the universal installer to put it on a usb drive the drive will not boot, I get an error "could not find boot image" and then a Boot; prompt. I tried a couple of usb drives all with the same results.

Thanks

1.)select "mbr.bin" from the installer when it asks you to choose
2._format USB vfat32 using qparted and set the boot flag

I've done it many times and it always works ...so you can too 8)

I tried that with the same results, if I use the usb drive on a laptop it boots fine but on the mini pc I get to the same prompt. If I use a usb drive with the full puppy release then it does work on the mini pc, so I am thinking there is a support file missing that is on the full pup version.

I do like your version though, it looks like what I need.

Thanks for all your Help

If you can vfat32 is the best for larger memory USB flash

Which did you finally choose 2.17 or 3.00 ?

3.00 has more options because of slackware
