Speak-Pup Version 0.001

#1 Post by Trobin »

Speak-pup version 0.001 experimental is now complete and out the door, and can be found at:

http://www.filecrunch.com/user/Trobin

MD5 is 2df2facef90bb1bb31caf55e755428a1 speak-pup.iso

Specifics:

Operating System......................................................................Puppy 2.17
Speech Server............................................................................FreeTTS
Screen Reader............................................................................YASR
Text Editer..................................................................................MP
Intrnet Browser...........................................................................Elinks
IRC Chat.....................................................................................Irssi
File Manager...............................................................................Ytree
Audio...........................................................................................MPG321
Soft Brailler.................................................................................Brltty

ISO size is 148 megabytes.

Speak-pup will load to a simple menu, from which you can opt to:
read your mail
Create a text file
Access the Internet
Chat using IRC
Manage your files
Reboot
Power off

While you are doing that Speak-pup will read, to you, what is on the screen. You can use your computer's speakers, or a headset. I prefer a headset myself as it's easier to undertand.

The ISO has all the Gui and stuff that came intalled in Puppy 2.17. It does not run the GUI for the simple reason that I deleted the 'X" symlink in /usr/X11R7/bin, so /etc/profile cannot find it. The symlink is still there, renamed Xcop. You can, if you wish, go to /usr/X11R7/bin and copy Xcop to X, reboot and set up the windowing system. However FreeTTS and YASR are command line programs, and will not work with the GUI operating. But it might come in handy when working on the OS.

If you do want to make changes, ue MP, the text editer, to open /etc/profile. Got down to the bottom of the script and comment out the very last line "exec /root/menu.sh." Reboot and you will be at the commnd line. I would suggest you do this even if you intend to use the GUI. Otherwise, if you use a terminal, you'll be presented with the menu.

I don't know if Brltty is operatng correctly, or even at all. It supposedly supports a soft brailler but I don't have one to test it on.

Speak-pup is very much a work in progress but I need spme input on where to go with it.

It got out the door too fast. Version 0.002 will be tested and uploaded tomorrow. The only difference will be that there will be a new menu entry called maintenace. Which will have a small script that will use dhcpcd to set up an internet connection.

The download link returns a file not found error.

Can someone post a link to any working download link?

Thanks!

I just tried the link and it worked for me a few minutes after I tried it and it didn't work.

No idea what's happening.

Seems to be working now.

I want this

#8 Post by geneven »

It says it's not there for me.

Text to speech is very dear to my heart; unfortunately, it's something done well in a Windows environment, where I have spent many happy hours listening (I'm currently listening to Tom Jones -- not the singer!)

My pet peeve is that TTS is often talked about as if only blind people want it. Not so!

Anyhow, I'll keep trying for this till I get it!

If anyone has a md5 checked download, could they use PupCreateTorrent to create a torrent so we can post that and download?

I have people who will mirror but no one has a iso file yet.

I wish I had an answer for this. The links work when I click on them. 80 downloads so far. I wonder if the place is just busy.

A solution is (hopefully) in the works.

I wasn't able to complete a download, crappy internet that allowed me to get 25% after an hours download. I will try again later.

For those who did and discovered that they couldn't get to the internet here's a fix.

Boot Speak-pup to the menu
At the menu, press f and enter to start up Ytree, the file manager.
Press 'x" to open up a command line
type 'xorgwizard'

This will set up the GUI windowing system. Set it up as you wish. I chose xvesa and accepted the defaults. I wasn't going to keep it anyway.

Set up the internet as you normally would for Puppy

Use the Rox filemanager to go to the /usr/X11R7/bin directory.

Find the file 'X' A symlink to xwin

Delete 'X'

Close out the rox file manager

Reboot the computer to save the settings.

I guess this is the official announcement.

I have no idea of how to announce it on the wikki, so I'll leave that to those who do.

The fix to the internet problems is in the above message.

Okay, I finally managed to complete a download. the md5sum of the file I uploaded matches the md5sum of the file i downloaded.

Not what I am looking for, but a good try

I finally downloaded it, but the voice is just not what I can live with.

Listen to articles at www.iht.com (each article gives you the choice of listening) and you will hear a truly human-sounding voice with not many flaws. That's what I would like.www.nextup.com also has some good voices, some of which I purchased.

But the nextup voices are mainly for the Windows world, and I think the voice at the iht.com site are only for business use, not for individuals.

So far, I haven't heard what I think of as a decent Linux voice.

Even the Mac has decent voices now, I understand.

So in the Linux world, working with text to speech is a heroic struggle.

Lobster just sent me this in an email:

Hi David,
Glad you are getting a lot of interest - clearly a need

sounds good - you might be interested in YAP which is now in Beta . . .
Yes it is set up for my usage to run a Buddhist shrine
BUT it could be adapted for your ISO

DOWNLOAD Beta 1 January 28 2008
13MB
http://www.tmxxine.com/shrine3/YAP.tar.gz

It is designed to be easy to alter.
You can add videos and sound of your choice
(a little study of the code in the first post should help to understand
how easy that would be)

So you could use it to provide podcasts and other teaching
or important info

swf files can be created in open office or wink
videos can be created on your camera and added

A front end introducing your puplet is easy to provide

Just click on YAP and it runs
the script can be edited in Geany

YAP info
http://tmxxine.com/wik/wikka.php?wakka=YapInfo

Also one person recommended this:

I would suggest that you try to incorporate the espeak synthesizer
rather than using festival. The speech is a bit better and there are more
languages available.

http://espeak.sourceforge.net

That's it for now!

Glad we have lots of interest in this project!!!

Just wanted to apologize to everyone who tried speak-pup and were not able to use email. Elmo is installed in OneBone-210-elinks, and it nevr occured to me that when I upgraded the Puppy Version to 2.17 that Elmo would not come long for the ride. THus there is no email program in speak-pup.

I've downloaded Elmo and tried to instal it in 217, but I get a "segmentation fault" error. I'll have a new iso as soon as I can find a console email clien t that I cn install.
