@Barburo, Thank you, that's good to know. Hey those Turions sound like excellent processors, wish I could afford one... maybe someday. I'm glad Puppy v3 Xorg works better than v2 for you and not the other way around.

Hi TazOC
The HP TX1000 laptop came pre-configured with Vista, but even with twin processors Vista is still a slug. I have been through all of the "speed-up-Vista" tips on the net and I have managed to make Vista perform respectably, but I am frequently left wondering "What's it doing now?" as I sit and wait in Vista for something to happen.
I repartitioned the laptop hard drive, got the correct drivers for XP (not easy), and set up a dual boot with Windows XP SP2. XP certainly flies along much faster than Vista and there's not much out there that is Vista-specific, so running XP is a viable option.
I added a Linux partition and loaded Ubuntu which has its own set of problems. (I started with Ubuntu before I found Puppy and I like to keep it going for comparisons).
I also run frugal installs of Puppy 3.01 and Muppy080 on the laptop. In Vista or XP there's a nice utility called NST that allows you to leave the boot sector alone and simply add a menu entry to the Vista boot screen that will bring up a version of Grub (NeoGrub) so that you can boot anything you like. The grub files (menu.lst ect.) are in the NST directory on the Vista partition.
What's nice about Muppy is that I can use my external 22" monitor with the laptop no problem - other puppy flavours need some tweaking - probably related to nVidia problems. Muppy080 is still getting the bugs worked out (I have to connect through my own script to make wireless work) and Mark still needs to do some things.
Strangely enough although Puppy works faster on the laptop than on the 800Mhz desktop, having dual processors doesn't take your breath away with its blinding speed, but having type2 USB slots is certainly faster than the old desktop ones.

Barburo: Vindows Vista: 'tis indeed a slug, even with twin 3gig CPUs & a gig of RAM... Good news is: Lighthouse Puppy just screams on my new machine!
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, SMOKIN'!! :D
TazOC: 'twas I who made that suggestion:
I reckon the highest praise one can offer any developer is this: "It just works!" This is the best combination of beauty & utility I've ever seen.
btw - Since there's no PayPal link on your Lighthouse site (hint, hint!) I've taken the liberty of sending Barry K. a USD 25 contribution and I invite all Puppy lovers to match or better it... throw that dog a bone!
Although someone asked for a way to donate last year I hesitated because I do it for a hobby and I believe in free software, and there are frequent times when I'm not able be involved at all. Also I don't want anyone to get the idea that LighthousePup is not free. It is and always will be. And the core is pure Puppy and I encourage those who are able to make a donation to Barry. The link is on the left-hand panel at www.puppylinux.org. If it weren't for Barry and the Puppy team there would be no LighthousePup!
$20 is not really a lot to ask for a full operating system:

You get that PayPal link button up ASAP, buddy! :D

had to leave lighthouse for a while, so i don't know if the problem i had was mentiont.
but most of the time it workt fine after a harddisk install, but i got the problem that somehowe after a while xorg gave an error that it could not start the server.
used xorgwizard, test went fine , use the okay button and get the black screen again that xorg could not be started.
only a new install could fix it for a while.

Hmm, that doesn't sound familiar. Sometimes you can type 'xwin' <ENTER> after that error and Xorg will start anyway. Was that full install or a frugal install? So X worked alright from the LiveCD but sometime later not, any idea what might have triggered this? Any new software or .pups/.pets or other changes? If Xorg won't start try
grep EE /var/log/X
<hit TAB><hit ENTER> and

Code: Select all

grep WW /var/log/X
<TAB><ENTER> (the TAB will fill in the rest of Xorg.0.log) or post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, /tmp/xerrs.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log and we'll try to help.

On www.lhpup.org/tips-lhp.htm Desktop Icons and User Interface:
If you prefer no autoraise and click-to-focus, then:
(Taskbar 'Rocket Icon') QuickLaunch | Advanced Settings | IceWM Settings | Edit Preferences
Put a '#' before AutoRaise=1 like this: #AutoRaise=1.
Save the file and you'll probably also want Start | Settings | Focus | Click to focus.

If that doesn't work, check these two files:
/root/.icewm/prefoverride
/root/.icewm/preferences
prefoverride takes priority and verify the items:

Code: Select all

# Auto raise windows after delay
#AutoRaise=1 # 0/1

# Focus windows by clicking
ClickToFocus=1 # 0/1
Hope that helps,

Excellent macadavy, I will do that, thank you!

I've rebuilt LighthousePup from scratch with Puppy 3.01 + Kirk's_KDE-3.5.7 + FF2.0.0.11 + Java + Flash9 + DRI + OPENGL + IceWM + GIMP2.4.3 + Xine + PSI.
Kicker taskbar is transparent w/18 icon quicklauncher (in two rows)
KDE shadow effects, DRI & 3D accelleration enabled by default
New option offered in Xorgwizard for DRI 'Direct Rendering Interface' issue on ATI_9200AGP 8x cards

Hope to start a new thread on this, more details, screenshots and an ISO ready soon.

New LighthousePup

#49 Post by goforit »

Hi, I am reading the posts and see a new LighthousePup is on the way I cant wait ! I love Puppy Linux and Lighthouse is one of my favorate pups. Two things in it I really use alot and work great are the music streamer and Realplayer. The one item in 2.15 Final I would have liked Is Firefox and see that the new version has it. Will the new LighthousePup still have Realplaer and the Music Streamer? Im hoping so. Thanks for creating such a GREAT version of puppy!

You're welcome. Good ideas there. I'm adding a couple of plugins necessary for XINE itself (the defaultmediaplayer in the screenshot above) to play realmedia files and streams. Browser plugin support I can't figure out, though; e.g., to play the teaser E.C. clip at real.com. I installed Realplayer-10Gold.pup and Realplayer opens, the browser opens, but still no real plugins browser support. Anybody else have more experience with this? (Edit: Just figured it out, had to put a symlink into /usr/local/bin and copy 2 plugins into the ~/.mozilla/plugins folder. Now realplayerG2 and rhapsody browser plugins work.)

Can you point me to a particular media, link or web page you'd like to open in Lighthouse? As it stands if you can d/l the .ram or .rm file, you'll be able to drag'and'drop into XINE. If XINE can do everything Realplayer can, and few are asking for it, I'd rather not include Realplayer to save space. It's easy for a user-install with the included PSI (Puppy Software Installer '07). I don't play realmedia files as often as I used to. (Edit: 2/5/08 I think I'll include RealPlayer after all, increased ISO <8MB and FF plugin works.)

By Music Streamer do you mean StreamTuner? That is definitely in Lighthouse and is configured to open Xine and you can also reconfigure to open XMMS or, I think gXine if you prefer.

Thank you Lobster! GTK2 theme is Aero-Nix from LighthousePup 215, code uses Xdialog adapted from MU's (end of /usr/bin/startkde, in Kirk's kde357.sfs):
Edit 2/5/08 KDE and LighthousePup-specific code omitted. restartwm may not work in Xvesa; I don't know why. TazOC

In the Xdialog code above...

If I delete the first 2 lines, shouldn't the remainder run in a console?
I am not having much luck with it.

try this - note the first line and remember to change permission to make executable

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#startkde2
# ! -f /etc/windowmanager ] && echo "startkde" &>/etc/windowmanager; export CURRENTWM="startkde";

Focus and New Lighthouse Puppy

#56 Post by Barburo »

Thanks TazOC,
I had been there before but couldn't find it again. I had the impression that the focus could be changed from the taskbar alone.
I like the look of your screen shots for the new version. Looking forward to the .iso and testing.

Updated Log Out / exit routine

I've edited the post above, removing the KDE and LighthousePup-specific code. When pasting into a terminal window, leave out the 'exit' at the end, so you can see what's happening. Also, note the

Code: Select all

--icon '/usr/share/icons/puppy-svg.png'
in the Xdialog part, modify or delete that as needed.
Hope that helps.

@Lobster I've updated the code posted above, but not on the TalkingStick Wikka. Note, I removed the LighthousePup-specific colors: ${cyan} and ${NC} near the very end.

Yeah, would be nice if you could change both AutoRaise and Focus from Taskbar in IceWM.
I like the look of your screen shots for the new version. Looking forward to the .iso and testing.
Thank you!
New ISO LighthousePup 3.01a4 is up at http://www.lhpup.org/download.htm. See new thread here:
