Goggles DVD Player, Super Lightweight and actually works :)

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Hi I came across this dvd player and well with all the problems users have had with the defaults, This one should make ya happy:) The pet packages is 1.7MB and the installed folder size is 4.6MB that's 1/4 of any of the main stream dvd players. Full screen works perfect also :)
Goggles is just a DVD player, no streams, or divx. Just Dvd and I added the css libs.
Goggles is a gui for ogle. Included in the package is fox Libraries. So you also get the following with the package:
Adie text/file browser
Fox Calculator
Fox Shutterbug

http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/pr ... -1.9.2.pet

here's more info
Goggles DVD Player is a frontend for Ogle DVD player. Besides the usual features like having a play button etc, Goggles tries to provide features not often found in other dvd players. Since Ogle in itself is only a dvd player, it has some neat capabilities that "general" media players cannot provide. Goggles extends these capabilities with a very userfriendly interface. See below for a list of some the feautures.

Goggles' attractive and responsive userinterface is written using the FOX Toolkit

Bookmarks / Picturesmarks. Add bookmarks to your favorite part of your movies. Not only can you switch amazing fast from one bookmark to the other, also for every bookmark you add a screenshot is automatically captured. Using the Bookmark browser you then can easily select the scene based on the picture.
The bookmark functionality is also extended to the automatic playing of dvds at its last position. If you ever watch a movie late at night and decide to go to bed. Don't worry, just quit Goggles and come back next day. Once you start Goggles, it starts playing the movie right where you left it, even if you turned of the computer or just had to show some other dvd first. Now, tell me, ain't that neat?

Chapter/ Title Browser. Want more power to navigate the dvd and the menu is bothering you. Just popup the chapter/title browser and Goggles will list all chapters and titles. Click on any of them to jump directly to that part of the dvd.

Plain Simple User Interface. Here at the "Goggles Factory", we don't really like too much fancy themed media players. They may look nice, but are often hard to use. For users the most important thing is functionality. Second, buttons should look like button, so they can be easily found. There is such a thing as too much eye-candy. With Goggles I'm trying to achieve a easy to use interface which looks nice and attractive.

have fun ttuuxxx

ps please tell me what you think?

*********Updated with menu fixes **********

also made that lilbcups.so.2 pup package into a pet package so just run it and thats it, no moving files etc :)

Even with my crappy SIS onboard video it plays full screen, smoothly installed on 3.01.
For the size it's outstanding.
One thing though. Somehow you got the FOX-calculator in the menu twice. Under Calulators and Utility. :)

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 71&t=24599

But I get an error that the home page needs to be called index.htm in the 1st link http://www.puppylinux.ca/ttuuxxx/Libs/

Also found lib at http://208.109.22.214/puppy/viewtopic.p ... b101dafee5 posted by muggins

Barry included Ogle in early version of Puppy, like 0.9x or somewhere there abouts. He had his own super light gui front end that partially worked, dont think it was ever fully functional. He never polished it up cause he went to gxine I think early in 1.xx series of Puppy.

I always liked Ogle and for while copied the ogle files from earlier Puppy, but somewhere in late 1.xx Puppy I upgraded hardware and Ogle didnt offer any real advantage at that point so just got to using gxine since it was already there and for most part worked fine. Ogle is especially great on older hardware, probably the lightest dvd player around. Nice somebody compiled it and made a package for current generation of Puppy.

Yes, used libcups.so.2 from muggins, extracted to /usr/lib, and it works well, looks good in fullscreen.
Even played a home made dvd of a school ski trip.

Although I've had to install CUPS now for the printer so I can do my daughter's homework. :?

Just a trivial sidecomment: the window in the "goggle2" image has "fire hyrant" in the title bar (missing "d")...

Anyone else curious if there will be any ramifications from using the name "Goggles?" I'm waiting for someone to post "Did you Google Goggle?"

There is no language-support.
The english strings are hardcoded in the .cpp files.
So those had to be translated, and then recompiled.
Fortunately, the interface is not that complex...

But I have no time for it at moment, maybe next week I'll add german.

no, I have some knowledge in C and Gtk, but not in C++ and LibFox.
This is very different.
I also would prefer, if we had the other way round, add good DVD support to XMMS or Mplayer.
Goggles has not been updated since 2006, while the others are still active.
But even if that would be easier (not easy) for me, it would take more time than I can afford.

The translation is different, you just replace the english words with german ones directly in the .cpp files.
That is no coding, just translating text.

Yes goggles hasn't been updated since 2006, But its just a gui anyways, and the way i look at it, If it works perfect why change it. Goggles/ogle to me is the best DVD player for linux for 3 reasons
1 in the menu you can set it to load a dvd automatically all you do is click on the menu item and it works. Thats really nice:)
2 Its super lightweight
3 excellent picture quality,Full-screen works, you can select regions, and the bookmark feature is really cool.

so with that in mind, why would you need updates? Other than Divx/Xvid features.
Oh also you can get a xmms plugin that lets use goggles as a front-end to play movies, http://nixbit.com/cat/multimedia/audio/ ... vd-player/
but thats a whole new can of worms :)~~~~
