Okay, if this has been discussed, I didn't see it and I hope I'm putting the question in the right place.

When playing video files of various formats (wanted to be sure it wasn't a single file or format), mplayer crashes. The file will open and play for 1 sec to a few minutes, but then crash.

I'm using a tweaked version of Pizzapup on a Dell CPx laptop (650MHz/512MB) and so far everything else works fine. If I can get this to work I can remaster. Help!

Well, one of the two machines I personally use with Puppy Linux is also an old Dell CPx laptop (450MHz, 256 MByte RAM). I love that old machine.

I much prefer using mplayer on it, at least compared to gxine (I haven't tried anything else though). Plays DVD's perfectly and smoothly (with DMA enabled, xv accelerated video mode, and a suitable buffer delay or whatever it is called; sorry don't have the machine handy at the moment).

However, I use tempestuous's more recent compilation of mplayer, which I originally had some problems with (due to my own stupidity, problems which were discussed and resolved here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=20960&search_id=693844228

However, I did used to use VLC on the same CPx machine when it originally had windows 98SE on it (or maybe it was win2k, I can't quite remember...), and it certainly was very good.

Mind you, I should also mention, I've been using Puppy version 2.17.1 so I don't know what difference there might be with Pizzapup.

That's interesting. I didn't realise you could play videos in XMMS. What formats can it play?

I remember that some people had issues with the Mplayer package I used, but I don't think they could get it running at all, so it's probably a different problem. For them, I had created this dotpup to change mplayer with a slightly different one.

And just to head off any confusion, Pizzapup 3.0 is based on Puppy 2.12, and Pizzapup 3.0.1 is based on Puppy 2.14. I numbered it based on it's being the third Pizzapup, rather than based on what Puppy was used.
