Pup214R is an unofficial update of Puppy 2.14 that Dougal and I have worked on more or less since Barry released Puppy 2.14.

Our goal has been to update, streamline and generally improve on what was already a great Puppy while still keeping it compatible with Barry's work.

One of the most obvious improvements in Pup214R is HotPup, an easy-to-use app with icons for mounting and unmounting drives. This is a complement to MUT and Pmount, both of which are still available.

For the curious, in Menu -> Help there is a link to the Pup214R changelog, listing the major changes.

Dougal has made almost all changes while I have done almost all testing, assembling the many tweaks and updates from Dougal and also acting as a sounding board.

A number of forum members have helped test specific hardware and have made suggestions for improvements. You know who you are - thanks

The pup_214R.sfs file is 69 MB compared with 67 MB for the original pup_214.sfs, so we've managed to keep Puppy slim.

We hope pup214R will appeal to those looking for a more polished version of standard Puppy.

Now that we've released Pup214R, we hope that the Puppy community will help us with feedback on improvements and any remaining bugs so we can improve Pup214R even further

Thank you all for this updated puppy, i am pleaed to say this is the first time my Pegasus 11 ADMtek adapter has worked, the driver is not in other puppy,s. I have not had time to test every thing that i can but so far it is good. as you have changed the order of the menu i had to have a look around but found all i needed.

Pmount is not seeing my USB floppy drive. I tried refresh and still no go. MUT sees it, but not all disks that are recognized in other versions of puppy.
Also, there is no full screen mode available with Gxine. When I select it, I get a momentary flash of the screen, but no full screen mode. This happens either using Xorg or Xvesa.
I should mention that I also had to tweak the refresh rate in xorg to get full screen on my IBM G70 monitor.

But kudos on it anyway. I like the interface and the ease of mounting and unmounting drives with the desktop icons.
I also noticed that other than setting up my screen, that I had sound and eth0 already set up when the desktop came up. The only pupsave files I had were in a subdirectory on a different drive and partition and were for puppy 3.01. So I do not think they were interfearing with it.

So again, kudos on a great remake!

I try Puppy Linux 2.14 Revisited on a Live CD, multisession.

First boot, all went OK. Nice load, and set-up of network and xorg went Ok , withouth problem.

Then save all the stuf to CD, All process OK.

Second boot.
Start normal till reach this point:

Coping /pup_214R.sfs to tmpfs ....mounting on (/initrd)/pup_ro2....done

Mounting 20017-12-01-16-41 on /pup_rw .... failed

Dumping last lines of /tmp/booting.log
Is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:

e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
etc. etc
Then after,
Loading kernel modules....

the system freeze for ever.

I like this, there were a number of features I noticed that you haven't advertised, so I will!

GQimage viewer looks really polished. I also like the fact that the default file handler for images is qiv not mtpaint, I look at images more often than I edit them.

An excellent set of gtk themes and a really nice touch is the button in the chooser to apply a matching theme to jwm. Jwm gets restarted automatically so the theme is applied immediately, thumbs up.
The background setter has had some of the less useful options removed.

Multi-level jwm menu.

Recognised my firewire subsystem and loaded the modules for it automatically and more importantly remembered to unload them on shutdown. For the uninformed, this avoids an irritating problem we found a few months ago that locked up IRQ11 on a warm restart if the firewire system wasn't unloaded properly. I tried out Debian Lenny a few weeks ago and it didn't manage to get this right.

Hotplug works well.

Oh and it also runs pnethood fine, shameless plug I'm not angling for it installed by default, its probably just about made it to beta status.

The downside, because there had to be one
If I boot with my USB stick inserted the ub module gets loaded and the stick gets listed by probepart as uba with a filesystem of none, it should be vfat. Unsurprisingly it isn't recognized by mut, pmount, hotplug or gparted. I see that there are ub nodes in /dev so I'm not sure what is going wrong. If I boot without the stick inserted then it gets recognized on insert as sda with a single partition that works fine.

This isn't a big problem for me but I wonder if booting off usb stick will work.

I was unable to boot 2.14R with LAN Switching enabled in the bios.

I booted several times with lan switching on and lan switching off....everytime switching was on the boot failed at loading kernel modules near the end of the process.

After disabling Lan Switching and booting successfully the Hotpup mounter worked well..seeing usb flash drives when plugged in and unmounts were smooth.

The boot up seems a tad slower than 301. Wifi with wpa/tkip worked great.

usb flash install will not save to sdb1 on first reboot...but did ok with a pup_save,saved back to sdb1.(I format the usb and set flag to boot before the install).

Booted on HP Compaq nx9420 laptop

I tried to set the button to PPPoE but i t will not change, when i click on it it is still awaiting set up. (connect button) but i can load the set up from the
menu and this works as i am using 214-r1 to write this message. I will try the printer and sound latter in the day, must take the dog for a walk.
