#1 Post by LOF »

The alpha version of ChurchPup, the Christian Puppy Linux Derivative has just been released.

The puplet is aimed primarily at Christians but is open to all!

Here is the link for anyone who is interested in testing it out. It's rather large but we hope you think it's worth it.

ChurchPup Ongoing Development Thread

Below is a summary press release from our lead developer, PrairieDog, who sums up the project in better words than I can.
ChurchPup Alpha is based on Puppy 301 and all of us involved in the project
acknowledge a debt of gratitude to Barry Kauler and all the
members of the community for doing all the really hard work.

LOF on the murga-linux forum has a desire to work on a Christian Puppy
derivative that focused on Bible study, office applications, internet and
email, but also include applications for multimedia presentations, audio
and video editing, and musical notation. It is based on an unleashed
puppy 301 and many packages were left out to simplify the menu and save
space.(It's a BIG Puppy!)
the added packages are as follows:

Gimp 2.4.0-rc3: Graphics editor Works great just wanted to try it out.

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2007: a Viewer for .ppt presentations which
have replaced the "overhead projector" in many modern Church services to
display lyrics for worship songs. (the overhead projectors replaced
hymnals I suppose.)

wine-0.9.47-i486-1 : Often called a windows emulator, to run the
aforementioned PowerPoint Viewer.

OpenOffice Suite version 2.2.0

BibleDesktop 1.0.8 : a front end for Jsword, a very versatile Bible
study tool written in Java

jre1.6.0_01 : a java runtime environment. Primarily intended for use by
BibleDesktop but also works with Firefox ,the default browser.

Firefox 2.0.0.9 with the Bible Fox theme by Bodizzle preinstalled and
ProCon Latte (content filter) as an optional install when you first
start the browser.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 Email Client

Note:Preferences are preset so that mailto links viewed in Firefox will
open Thunderbird and http links in emails viewed in Thunderbird will
launch Firefox.

Two HTML Bibles, the NET Bible and the WEB Bible. More on the way I think

Adobe Reader 7.0 is the default pdf viewer

Audacity 1.2.3 sound editor

Denemo-0.7.3-b1 front end for Lilypond-2.10 Musical notation software
which is also included.

GXBible: a script that uses gxmessage to display a different Bible verse
each time ChurchPup starts up or when you click the Bible icon on the
desktop. If you don't read the Bible much , Think of it as God's "nag
screen"

Kino 1.0.0 Video Editor

Mplayer 108 Media Player is included mostly for the browser plugin.

VLC 0.8.6 Default Media Player

Xsane image scanner

Xtris: a Tetris clone included by request

Timidity midi player for audio output of Denemo/Lilypond

Last but not least WhoDo's EZPup for exquisite good looks and usability.

to God be the Glory, Amen
Thanks for reading. Comments welcome (but try to stay on the subject of the puplet and not on the good/bad sides of religion's infiltration into Linux).

Here's a CoBlitzed link for ChurchPup; I don't know but it might save you some traffic on your server (485mb is a big puppy  )

http://coblitz.codeen.org/www.elmirachr ... pAlpha.iso

See the Hosts for large files thread for more info on CoBlitz.

You might also want to offer it by BitTorrent.

Edit: and don't forget to offer an MD5 checksum.

Thanks klu9. MD5 added. We hope the bandwidth on the site is good enough to hold but your link will help too!

Download away...

I have room on puppylinux.ca for your puppy.

Due to the size is it best to wait for the beta or final for me to download?
I have created a url for you as follows... http://www.puppylinux.ca/churchpup/

This probably should have been in the alpha but I'm only a third of the way around the learning curve. This is a patch that will add a Bible Study category to the main menu and place all Bible related apps under it. Obvious isn't it? I should have waited a few hours to say "done" Note it will restart the window manager so don't freak when the screen blanks out OK?

We all hope you like our first attempt. Keep those words in mind: FIRST ATTEMPT

Every eye will see him.

Mark

I am downloading it now. I will post my findings over in the development thread. Likewise, CS-FSLUG will be notified.

Subito Piano,
Nice work setting up the web page at your school 8)
I notice you listed the md5sum on the page. This is good but to make the check less error prone,
I suggest you create a file with the md5sum in it something like this:

#cd {into the directory where your .iso is}
#md5sum ChurchPupAlpha.iso > ChurchPupAlpha.iso.md5.txt

this would calculate the md5sum for you and place it in a text file which
is usually named the same as the .iso with ".md5.txt" appended to it.

The way for people to check if what they downloaded matches the original:

#md5sum -c ChurchPupAlpha.iso.md5.txt

After about 30 seconds or so, you get the message:

"ChurchPupAlpha.iso : OK

or : Failed

cheers,
Richard.

Hmm--this page is seriously out of date--but i JUST saw this!

Thanks for the typo note, Klu9 - i HATE that sort of stuff. (Yeah, i know "i" should be uppercase...e.e. cummings and all that...(

Likewise, ricstef, i will "TRY" to try what you suggested. Time is such a precious commodity.

This is posted elsewhere, but does anyone know how to configure wine to work with esword? I can't do it in Puppy or Mepis, my buddy who introduced me to Linux cannot either. I'd like to try it for me and for the "Lite" version (a.k.a. "ChapelPup").

Thanks to all. If you didn't see it, ChurchPup RC1 is up.

Importing SeaMonkey Settings to ChurchPup?

#11 Post by edoc »

Anyone upgraded from an older Puppy to ChurchPup?

I'd like to do the upgrade from TEENPup but cannot lose all of my Seamonkey settings,
especially the E-mail folders with archived E-mails, Address Book, Bookmarks, and Passwords.

I guess that upgrades should be part of this testing phase we're in. I'm downloading teenpup now to attempt an upgrade, But I think some programs may clash.

I'm thinking if you had a working ChurchPup installed and could copy the /root/.mozilla directory from TeenPup to/root of your ChurchPup installation, all emails, bookmarks and cookies should import OK. I'll test a few things and report back to you at the New ChurchPup thread

Thanks Doc,

Mark
