puppy has xf-prot available as a gui frontend to f-prot. if you do Menu->Setup->Puppy Package Manager, then click PetgetPackageManager, second button from the top, then click the big button, then go down the left hand side list & select XF-Prot, then click Add, then OK.

This will then dload & install xf-prot for you. (or you can go here:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... uppylinux/

and look in the pet packages for whatever version puppy you're running, 1,2 or 3, dload it manually, click on it & install).

you should probably check for new virus definitions as soon as you install it.

as an alternative google for the free "avast for linux", which is simple to install. ask if you have any trouble.

Just to remind people. These virus checking packages are to clean the infestation of Windows

Some Puppys have to use Windows for work, college or essential game playing. So if your Windows hard drive goes down you can clean from Puppy.

I doubt that it's the heavy-duty AV that you're after. But then again I think the only Real-time protection is the plug!

I haven't used an AV in years, and a mate & I still chortle that Norton's was a worse cure than any virus!

Not aware of any virus or spyware infection of pup just running the pup firewall which is all most use. Suppose a few run anti-virus to check for win stuff but haven't heard much about it.

It contains only the local scanner - so, it can be used to scan files and directories on Linux and Windows partitions.

I suppose if I were worried about viruses or strange things going on, I'd write a little script that would make a target file for parent directories. Then run a script to make a compare file from time to time. Then check the differences between the files for clues of potential problems with md5sums not matching or new files being added and etc.

In the example below, /bin should not change much if any, so bells would go off in my head if I saw certain changes that made no sense.

no,

I haven't heard of that one. But I remember installing a program, back in 1998 on windows, that claimed it would encrypt my entire hard-drive. Googling for the program, about 50% of hits were from virus sites, warning that it was a virus, the other 50% claiming it was a legitimate encryption program.

When I ran the program it came up with a warning that, despite negative criticism that it was viral, it was an encryption program that would make my hdisk inaccesible to even the NCA. Throwing caution, & commensense, to the wind I went ahead & ran it.

maybe ten minutes later I fdisked the hard drive, but there was one mysterious 256k partition that I never could remove using DOS fdisk.

I'll have a hunt around and see if i can locate what that program was called...in the interests of posterity.

Ah So are there some good live CDs that are great for this issue .... where windows goes down, you boot up with a liveCD designed to scan and fix viruses ? something like Knoppix, but focused on scanning a windows PC when it goes down ?

The problem I see is the signature files need to be up to date which is a little hard to do on a cd, but not impossible for sure.

I think if one put the scanner and signature files on a usb stick, they could boot with about any Linux live cd and run a scan on Windows and / or entire system, by mounting the usb stick and running the scanner from it.

I really like the idea of scanning a dormant MS operating system. The reason being, is certain malware designed to mask themselves from Windows don't even know they are being scanned by Linux.

I was thinking of a dedicated distro site (not necessarily Puppy, but wondered if it exists anywhere) which updates it's iso every day (or even week to begin with), so when a windows computer goes down, a freshly burnt CD has up to date sig files.

Interesting point about the hiding from windows but not from Linux.
