What is Compiz Fusion ?

(taken from AboutCompizFusion Wiki page)

Compiz Fusion is the result of a merge between the well-known Beryl composite window manager and Compiz Extras, a community set of improvements to the Compiz composite window manager. Compiz Fusion aims to provide an easy and fun-to-use windowed environment, allowing use of the graphics hardware to render each individual window and the entire screen, to provide some impressive effects, speed and usefulness. The first Compiz Fusion developer release was Compiz Fusion 0.5.2 on August 13th 2007, shortly after Compiz 0.5.2 was released.

Compiz Fusion is an open-source software project, meaning anyone can use it freely and contribute.

It is important to note that Compiz and Compiz Fusion are not the same thing (see: Compiz Fusion Vs Compiz). There is close co-operation between the developers of Compiz and the developers of Compiz Fusion, though ; in fact, many Compiz Fusion developers are also Compiz developers.

Prerequisites:
Easy: Hard: (not really) Download: (Puppy 3.xx) Requires: Usage:
  • Start Compiz Fusion with this command:

    Code: Select all

    compiz-manager
Run 'ccsm' or 'simple-ccsm' to configure Compiz Fusion.
Troubleshooting:
  • Problem: "Another window manager is already running on screen: 0" Solution: Kill that window manager (example: 'killall xfwm4' if you're running XFCE)

Problem: There are no icons in CCSM and you don't have kde, gnome or xfce Solution: Download [hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.tar.gz] 6.3 kB (from Grafpup's repo) rename to "hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.pet" and install.

I have an ATI in both my laptop and my desktop, but I figured I'd give it a try anyway. First note, the compiz-fusion package is misnamed. It needs to be "(wow)" instead of "wow" because the internal folder has the parentheses. I renamed it and it installed fine.

I couldn't get it run under xterm so I tried xfce. Xfce isn't even running in 3.00b2 because of some expat problem that I haven't figured out yet. I'll screw around with it more later.

Oh thanks, I forgot that filefront doesn't admit parenthesis in the file name.

Yeah, install Compiz in Puppy may be impossible for now, cause ATI drivers( proprietary) does not support AIGLX, Compiz, Beryl and few more things. In other distros like Ubuntu the solution is an XGL xserver

However I've readed(Phoronix website) something about a new ATI driver which support AIGLX.

Have you 3D acceleration working?

Check if your hardware is supported:

http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/ATI
http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/Blacklist
ATI with AIGLX

For 1st generation radeons through 4th generation radeons (but excluding the Xpress chipsets)
ATI with Xgl

For 5th and 6th generation radeons (3rd and 4th generation radeons are supported as well, but AIGLX is preferred).

3D acceleration is working, and I have had both xfce and Beryl working on this box under 2.17. Beryl was a royal pain, though. I just downloaded 3.00 final, I will see if that fixes this expat problem.

My card does not appear to be on the blacklist, it is an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 if I remember correctly. Anyway, I will report back once I have tested it out on 3.00 final.

wow i got it running with the xfce 4 .sfs and it can now be autostarted

emerald doesn't seem to work for me did the commented out the line in /ect/profile
it seems to give a lib-wnck error i think i have your older .pet(ccsm is not in it)that hadn't been fixed to i'll get the new one soon and see if that fixes it

also heard from a possibly unrelyable source that e17 or e16 runs with beryl compiz is that true(or require serious hacking)?

Try changing the color depth to 24bbp.
it seems to give a lib-wnck error

I have no idea. AFAIK compiz fusion is a "window manager" like 'kwin'(KDE) or 'xfwm4'(XFCE 4) it just replaces that component in those Desktop Environments.

strangly it required a reboot before emerald would work... not sure why I already knew about the 24b and set that when i booted

i had tryed to restart x several times but it seems that it really needed a reboot for some reason.

downloading deps for ccsm right now.....

edit: got ccsm working noticed that some changes require to restart x and are not instant like activating the ring switcher (the main reason i even bothered with cimpiz-fusion) LOL

Yeah, the INI backend(not compiled in Puppy-3) is not compatible. Try the GConf backend instead: CCSM>Preferences>Backends>Gconf
wow wrote:Compiz Fusion Settings:
Press the 'Preferences' button; choose 'GConf backend'; restart CompizFusion and 'ccsm'.

Yep. I used to run Beryl without any windowmanager, just starting X with startx rxvt and then launching it from there. That had issues with needing two windows open for things to work correctly though. I haven't tried Compiz Fusion yet, maybe things have smoothed out.

I'll have to try this when I get a chance.

I've just compiled everything(development branch) in Puppy-3 and the INI backend still can't apply changes on the fly and few plugins doesn't work properly (screensaver, 3D) :x

EDIT: Solved, "inotify plugin"(compiled in Puppy3) requires the "inofity-tools" package (Petget)

OMG...someone pinch me! Compiz! On Puppy! *dies*

*revives self*

One slight problem though...I run an nVidia card...

cb88, you say you run a GeForce 2?

Could you break it down for me, neanderthal speak like, how you got it working?

The guys at work aren't going to believe this! The only down side is I just got my 2.17.1 main machine running sweet, looks like it's time for a re-install and move up to 3.01!

I THOUGHT I did everything right, but apparently not.

Using xfce I get...

Code: Select all

# compiz-manager
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1024x768) to maximum 3D texture size (4096): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting emerald
/usr/bin/compiz (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
/usr/bin/compiz-manager: line 376: /usr/bin/metacity: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/compiz-manager: line 376: exec: /usr/bin/metacity: cannot execute: No such file or directory
#
When using icewm it goes to start then crashes to command line.

What am I doing wrong? :(

Should probably mention I'm also using EZPup 3.0

xfce-4.2.xx? Try:

Code: Select all

killall xfwm4
Before start 'compiz-manager'. I had the same problem with that version.
