Worth noting that this poll is unofficial, as well as invalid in not including all the obvious candidates. It has only a limited advisory capacity. BK will choose an official logo, if any. But yes, we can try ;-)

And there's been some excellent work here!

Just my two cents, but, you'd have to be off your rocker and colourblind not to go with RasterPax.

I am 'off my rocker' and have already used RasterPax, for example on these pages:

I was going to vote (for the Paw), but couldn't. Seems it's already over, though without any announcement.
Well, reading the whole thread, it seems like this thread is not about finding a new and good logo for Puppy after all. Rather it's a way to legitimize a logo that already in favour by SOME Puppy personnel (rastapax's is already in the gallery since 10/11/2006 but Puppy never used it - that's a fact!)
Maybe that's why the poll doesn't include all the submitted logos, and was quickly closed while the favoured one is in the lead (notice that no date been given previously when exactly the poll will be closed).
Notice also that although it is said that BK has the final word and not the biased poll result, but the biased poll result has always been their argument base, and furthermore the favoured logo already been implemented in Puppy new versions before BK announce his decision.
That means one (or more?) who has the authority of the Puppy wiki and forum is the real (de facto) KING(s) of Puppy. And obviously the KING(s) won't listen to anybody else, let alone his people, albeit how reasonable the explanations are (the KING likes it, punt).
In a way, it somehow shows disrespect to BK and the Puppy community. MAY GOD SAVES THE KING(s) !!!

king

#205 Post by raffy »

If it means "most work done", then there would indeed be kings here - am sure Lobster and MU are good candidates*. :D Although, I guess Lobster would just be happy swimming in his aquarium rather than sitting on a throne. :)

As to use, if you search for splash image implementation, Pizzasgood is already using one of the rastapax images. That is one other use, in addition to what Lobster said.

The community wants to embrace all contributors and use all contributions. That is one reason you may not see a "clean" end to this vote. (I would not know myself the end of the vote, as another member put it up.)
-----------------------------------------------
* For the most work done, it will of course be Barry.

At one point (before this thread existed) I tried improving the rastapax image

Image
. . . the original is better

I always liked the Puppy + flower image and that is used on the wiki

Who remembers the original Puppy logo?

Image
glad that is no longer used . . .

I've always thought that one surpassed the "scary" factor of my test-pattern splash screen from Puppy 1.0.1 or so. Even so, I was almost disappointed to see it go.

As far as I can recall (which isn't very reliable) Puppy has never really had any official logos, other than possibly pictures of Puppy himself (the dog, I mean). People say "this should be the official" or "no, that should be!", but in the end, Barry just picks out an image he likes and uses it until he decides to grab another. And the various Puppy websites just use whatever their owners/maintainers feel like using. All in all, it's chaotic. Just like Puppy.

I don't think that's a bad thing at all. When you have an official logo, you feel inclined to make everything based off that. But when you don't, you get much more variety. Just look through this thread! Now consider the Ubuntu logos. They're all boring, because they're the same thing.

Puppy is exciting, and not having an official logo is too. You never know what someone will post next. Maybe they aren't as immediately recognizable, but they do have a tendency to make you think "puppy" (they'd better!). Whether you capitalize it depends on whether you've heard of Puppy before, but then, someone who hasn't wouldn't know what it is anyways.

So as far as I'm concerned, there is no logo. That way the creative doors and windows and skylights and portals are all wide open, and you get a small sense of mystery or exploration because you never know what to expect. It's just more fun.

Unless I've missed an adoption notice along the way, I'll "dimish" that "fact:" according to this forum post, Vincent belongs to Barry's daughter.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Mr. Barry Kauler, established the "Puppy Linux Project" in January 2003, as a collaborative effort not a monolithic corporation.

With that in mind, maybe arguing about and trying select a single logo to represent all of the parts of that collaborative effort in all possible contexts, is the wrong way of looking at things.

well my conclusion all the new ones just don't work for me, I just like the old one with the flower in his mouth, he looks like a happy puppy, not a vector puppy, or an ugly white MU puppy, that breed of dog is noisy and all you want to do is kick it to shut it up. I think they should keep the one I talked about or go corporate with letters and or a logo not dog related but graphical.
Oh one last point on my website the one puppy icewm start menu button that I've made has been downloaded over 5000 times and its the one with the dog with the yellow rose, but that image has the rose removed. Just an idea. www.ttuuxxx.com

While Beneaton has a point that Puppy is "a collaborative effort not a monolithic corporation", I still think that a distinct logo would be valuable; if you as an individual don't feel like using the logo, then fine, nobody's forcing you.

That said, I think that making a logo that is too cartoony/detailed is a mistake. It makes it so that it's not as easily customized, and when it's made smaller (like for the Start menu) it's less recognizable. Windows and Macintosh both use logos that are stylized, easily customized, and still easily recognized when shrunk. I think rastapax's logo fits these criteria the best. Sure, it might be hard to see against a black background, but it takes seconds to colour it white (or whatever colour you like) so it's bright and easy to see against any background. Vincent, while a good runner up, doesn't customize so easily while still looking good.

Long story short, I like rastapax's logo the most.

As far as making a special logo for Puppy 3.0 Fire Hydrant... I direct attention to Apple's use of logos on OSX. There's OSX Jaguar, OSX Panther, OSX Leopard... But they don't make a completely new logo every time they release a new OS, because that would confuse everybody. They just modify their existing logo and it looks great while still being easy to figure out. Jaguar used the Apple logo with a spotted design on it. Panther used the Apple logo in glossy black, etc.

So taking this into account, we could do something like this for the Fire Hydrant logo (I'm sure anyone else could do it better; I don't claim to have any ability in graphic design):
