Ok, did some testing...

I found out, if you use the "ServerLayout"-Section ( that you will need for the touchpad), you explicetly must add keyboard and mousedrivers and the screen.

This file works for me, it also has the entries for your touchpad.

Maybe you must change the keyboard and mouse-section (you certainly don't have "de" but "en").

Today I tried several hours getting xkb (thekeyboard-driver) working, but without success.

I always got the error:
Error loading new keyboard description

This also happened, when I tried the "setxkbmap"-utility (that is not part of the dotpup).

So fiinally I gave up, and used an older method, and fine: (German Umlaute) work.

Just the "alt"-Keys don't.
So I have put the "alt" -characters to some F-Keys: @|~{[]}\

All this works in rxvt, mozilla, abiword, leafpad and adie, but not in beaver.

Here is a short instruction:

edit /usr/X11R6/bin/xwin:

Code:
#!/bin/sh

#-- Uncomment the server you want --
MYSERVER=xorg
#MYSERVER=kdrive

xmodmap /root/.Xmodmap

The last line here is new.

Now create a file /root/.Xmodmap with this code:

Code:

    keycode 11 = 2 quotedbl twosuperior
    keycode 12 = 3 section threesuperior
keycode 20 = ssharp question backslash
keycode 34 = udiaeresis Udiaeresis bracketleft braceleft
    keycode 47 = odiaeresis Odiaeresis
    keycode 48 = adiaeresis Adiaeresis
keycode 49 = asciicircum degree backslash bar
    keycode 58 = m M mu
keycode 94 = less greater bar brokenbar

! F5 @
    keycode 71 = at
! F6 |
    keycode 72 = bar
! F7 ~
    keycode 73 = asciitilde
! F8 {
    keycode 74 = braceleft
! F9 [
    keycode 75 = bracketleft
! F10 ]
    keycode 76 = bracketright
! F11 }
    keycode 95 = braceright
! F12 \
    keycode 96 = backslash

The lines beginning with "!" are just comments.

If you are swedish, or from another country, google for "xmodmap" sites of your language, to find an example that fits your needs.

Restart X, and you have the new characters.

i hope I will finda correct solution for the "alt"-keys soon.

This german page helped me (among some others):
http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/German-HOWTO-5.html

Hi MU,

I tried the xmodmap /root/.Xmodmap stuff in 1.0.5rc with standard kdrive,
not your xorg server..

Doesn't work. I also included the line in /root/.xinitrc - also without success..

Do you know a way to have the german umlauts in standard puppy 1.0.5?

PS

Peter,

try to run also Puppys new script chooselocale
I ran it too, but I don't know if it is needed in this case.

If not, try this:
extract the attached file to
/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwertz

Replace the content of /etc/keymap with this line:
de-latin1-nodeadkeys.map

Restart X.

If I remember well, in puppy 1.0.4 this worked, except there was no "chooselocale", so i had to add
export LANG=de
somewhere manually.

It did not work in the console, but in Mozilla and Gtk2-Applications (Abiword) and the editor adie.

Does this work?

Can you attach your xorg.conf please? I'm curious what it looks like.

For Hardware-accelerattion you might need a DRI-module, but they just exist for a few grafics-chips.

I will upload them in some hours.

Thanks, Mark

I found a good Swedish xmodmap on the internet (I've attached it below) and made the modifications you suggested.

Results: Success! I'm typing this now from Puppy 1.0.5rc with X.org 6.8.2 and a working Swedish keyboard: plus AltGr: @$~|

The keys have worked in all the applications I've tried so far.

Once again, many thanks, Mark!

I did not use
clear Mod1

Now some adaptions and I have a "real" german keyboard, though the Xorg-Keyboard-driver is broken. Great, Thank you !

I just see, you don't even have to change
/usr/X11R6/bin/xwin
as .Xmodmap is loaded automatically from xwinpuppy

Setting up an international keyboard for Xorg 6.8.2 with Puppy

Germans:
create a file /root/.Xmodmap
with beaver, containing these lines:

Code:

clear Mod1
clear Mod2

keycode  64 = Alt_L Meta_L
keycode 108 = Mode_switch

    keycode 11 = 2 quotedbl twosuperior
    keycode 12 = 3 section threesuperior
    keycode 16 = 7 slash braceleft
    keycode 17 = 8 parenleft bracketleft
    keycode 18 = 9 parenright bracketright
    keycode 19 = 0 equal braceright
keycode 20 = ssharp question backslash
    keycode 22 = BackSpace
    keycode 24 = q Q at
    keycode 34 = udiaeresis Udiaeresis
keycode 35 = plus asterisk asciitilde
    keycode 47 = odiaeresis Odiaeresis
    keycode 48 = adiaeresis Adiaeresis
    keycode 49 = asciicircum degree
    keycode 58 = m M mu
keycode 94 = less greater bar brokenbar

    keycode 107 = Delete
    keycode 110 = Right
    keycode 113 = Left

add Mod1 = Alt_L
add Mod2 = Mode_switch

This works on my Laptop-Keyboard in most applications except beaver.

Swedish: Download Pakts swedish xmodmap, extract it in /root, and rename it to .Xmodmap
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=2303&start=30#14403

Then restart X or type in rxvt:
xmodmap /root/.Xmodmap

You also should do this:
run from the "Startmenue - Control Panel - Chooselocale country localization", and select your country (Germans: DE_DE@Euro).

Others:
You can find out the keycodes using xev.
Run it, click it with the mouse, andhit a key.
Then the keycode is displayed.
use these keycodes to alter the .Xmodmap from Pakt or me.

If you finished, please post it here, I might create a dotpup with a small "Xmodmap-Chooser".

There just happened something strange... I don't know the reason.

Mounted usr_devx.fs, tried to run the kdrive-server (that did not start, maybe I installed to much Xorg, but does not matter, just wanted to test something), ran some programs.

Anyway, suddenly, I need other keycodes.
Somewhere, somehow I seem to have another keyboard, although the xorg-log still says it loads the default-driver.

Here is the .Xmodmap i need now (The cursor-keys and Alt-Gr have new codes):

Code:

clear Mod1
clear Mod2

keycode  64 = Alt_L Meta_L
keycode 113 = Mode_switch

    keycode 11 = 2 quotedbl twosuperior
    keycode 12 = 3 section threesuperior
    keycode 16 = 7 slash braceleft
    keycode 17 = 8 parenleft bracketleft
    keycode 18 = 9 parenright bracketright
    keycode 19 = 0 equal braceright
keycode 20 = ssharp question backslash
    keycode 22 = BackSpace
    keycode 24 = q Q at
    keycode 34 = udiaeresis Udiaeresis
keycode 35 = plus asterisk asciitilde
    keycode 47 = odiaeresis Odiaeresis
    keycode 48 = adiaeresis Adiaeresis
    keycode 49 = asciicircum degree
    keycode 58 = m M mu
keycode 94 = less greater bar brokenbar

    keycode 107 = Delete
    keycode 102 = Right
    keycode 100 = Left

add Mod1 = Alt_L
add Mod2 = Mode_switch
