Online apps

#21 Post by Boo2themoon »

Hi all,
Another newbie here (Bill must be getting worried by now).
I have been trying to get free of Windows for a while now and the final hurdle for me was syncing my phone contacts. Calendar, to-do’s and notes with Linux. I couldn’t find a newbie way to do it. Until now.

Mobical web base pim. Website http://www.mobical.net
Review http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features ... calnet.php

Ok here is the rub, while the Mobical service is completely free, it will cost you mobile data charges when you sync. Here in the UK this is not too expensive as mobile operators like Vodafone now charge (I am advised) around 7p per mb on “pay as you go

Not sure if y'all know about the Office2.0 Database ( http://o20db.com/db/ ) which lists many online productivity apps.

Some more info:

Thanks for the great links Lobster and klu9. They should offer some nice improvements.

I'm waiting for Barry to release 2.18 before I release myPup again, so that I can take advantage of many of the bugfixes he has reported on his forum.

The more I use myPup, the more I am convinced this is a very worthwhile direction for a puplet.

Thanks guys!

This a great project. While not really my cup of tea (I'm really a desktop app man), I know so many people that this would be perfect for. Thanks for making this contribution to the community!

myPup: Good Stuff!

#25 Post by laika »

i just graduated from dial-up a couple of days ago and downloaded myPup (from SimplePup), and i'm loving it! so far, everything i need has worked without tweaking (i had to drop back to pppoe-setup to connect, but that was no biggee).

yeah, myPup is nice and uncluttered, and it looks very nice right out of the box. i'm not familiar with JWM (been using XFce with SimplePup), but it looks fine and it's responsive, and wbar is pretty cool, too.

i'm really enjoying myPup! thanks for making myPup free and available!

Rhino,

Thanks for this great puplet! I really like the way you designed it, with Wbar and your JWM interface.
Everything seems to work fine, except youtube videos freeze after the first 10 seconds.

Looking forward to the next myPup!

best regards,
Bert

Rhino wrote:My plan is to attempt again to shrink this down to a smaller size by removing SeaMonkey and install Firefox or maybe even Flock as the browser.
i would've preferred Firefox on myPup. Seamonkey works great, but i don't need the mail and editor and such. to me, Firefox (haven't tried Flock) would seem more in keeping with your Web 2.0 idea.

this is certainly not a complaint, though :D

I will be checking out the latest new puppies to see if I can base it off of one of those, or if I'm better to keep it at 2.16.

I would like myPup to have some differences from the original puppy. I had also given some thought to basing it off of grafpup which has a little more polish to it and feels more "finished" than a standard puppy. I like grafpup's use of openbox.

It would be great if someone could write a script that would allow a user to make a new desktop or menu link where the user is prompted to pick a url and an icon and it creates the icon on the desktop and a menu entry.

I'm not a programmer, but it seems within the realm of possibility. If there are any takers, please send me a pm or just post here.

I hope to get rolling on a new release in the next couple of weeks. My wife is in the middle of her chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer and both of my kids are playing soccer this fall, so I don't have much time to play with puppy. I will be back on top of things asap. Even with that, I've decided I might complete my chemistry degree (already have a Master's in Biology) so...time is precious.

Good news from the Google folks! Now they have a simple presentation app in their Google Docs and Spread. Thinkfree.org has always had that, but it requires java for some functionality. I will be testing the Google Presentation app and see what happens. I would really like to keep away from java and leave it as a d/l it only if you need it.

I'm having the same problem...must be a server issue. As far as I know that is the only place that it is currently hosted. MU may be able to shed some light on why the d/l is not working properly. He very graciously hosts a lot of our puplets.

myPup is a great idea

#38 Post by simes »

I think myPup is a great idea. In a world where more and more people have 'always on' internet access, using Web 2.0 applications will become more popular with time. When people realise that they can continue to use old PC hardware and still get modern function, operating systems such as Puppy will take off and the myPup derivative looks to be a clever idea which fits the original Puppy concept.

So even though my hardware isn't that old I installed myPup for fun. However I've not been able to test it because I cannot get it to recognise my ethernet card. In fact I have tried two cards and neither is recognised. I know which drivers to use but Puppy will not load them. In another partition I run Puppy 2.16 and that loads the drivers reliably. I wonder whether you have accidentally removed a module which is needed to make device detection work. Or, if anyone can suggest what I have done wrong, please say!

I would certainly encourage you to continue developing myPup as and when you get the opportunity.

I will check out the wired connection and see if it works OK. I may very well have messed something up. Thanks for checking out myPup! Please add any comments or suggestions for improvement as you play with myPup.

Thanks again,

myPup: an idea whose time has come

#40 Post by macadavy »

Thanks for myPup. I think its an idea whose time has come, or at least is coming shortly.
One way might be to start building it from a stripped-down Pup like Hairy Will's FatFreePup or Raffy's SafePup. The facility to choose our own 'webtop' providers would be the most flexible option, I think. Link lists like the ones Lobster has developed or that klu9 pointed to and/or this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ri ... plications for example, could be included as bookmark links for users to explore. There's a bewildering variety available these days - perhaps its best to let each choose their own. Generally if the hoster is geographically closer to the end user the appy will be faster.
Remember that Firefox is near-infinitely extensible with extensions & plug ins. For example there are mplayer and gxine plug ins for streaming multimedia. While adding extensions (e.g. ForcastFox, etc.) is trivial, I'm one who's always found it difficult to install plug ins correctly. (I'm such a n00b!)
A Firefox with pre-installed plug-ins for Flash9, mplayer & gxine, and some sort of n00b-proof installer for bigger plug ins like Jave JRE and Adobe PDF Reader would be really useful while keeping initial size down. And there are even faster, stripped-down browsers like Swiftweasel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiftweasel that are 100% Firefox compatible and can use FF extensions & plugins.
Regarding adding stuff to the menu, etc. most newer DotPups automagically add the <name>.desktop file needed by XDG when installing, so there must be someway to incorporate this to do it for new online apps users might want to add. I'd leave off automatically creating desktop icons or you might soon have wall-to-wall clutter that defeats the purpose of quick'n'easy access to a given application.
Regarding the matter of opening a browser without menus: do you mean opening it full screen? This would have the effect of making the webtop app appear to be running in its own window, as it were. It must be easy to configure Firefox to open full screen by default, no?
Finally, it might be useful to add on line storage options (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_hosting_service ) and even web desktop systems like DesktopOnDemand: https://desktopondemand.com/
HTH and keep up the good work! :D
