Firefox update repeats

#61 Post by tazoc »

melmc wrote:I found the following in the Firefox release notes. I am now running Puppy from a frugal install. Can I cure this problem by making some files in the sfs writeable?
I think the .sfs in operation is read-only, however after creating a pup_save.2fs file when prompted at first boot shut down you now have a new layer (/initrd/pup_rw) that is writable. Thus changes to the file system are saved to the writable layer and with few exceptions the changes should be saved on reboot. The only exceptions I can think of are logged each shutdown at /var/log/unionfs/pup_dip_removed.log

The exact source of the Firefox update problem you are experiencing and the conditions under which it occurs still eludes me. I haven't been able to reproduce it as yet. I wonder if there is something simple here we are overlooking?

If desired you can copy all files from the CD-Rom to a new folder on a writable drive, use Edit-SFS on pup_215.sfs, Geany on boot.msg, pup_215.sfs.md5 and then ISOmaster to combine it with the other files on the original ISO; or alternatively use Dougal's remaster, or other remastering tools to create a new custom ISO or puppy derivative. The advantage of this method is your customizations/updates would be available on first boot (liveCD mode.) This is how LighthousePup was built.

Firefox update repeats

#62 Post by tazoc »

Actually, in the case of Firefox, probably editing pup_215.sfs wouldn't be the best method because it doesn't have Firefox in it. FF is in the Mariner add-on, lhp-mar-02_215.sfs. So you could use Edit-SFS on the Mariner SFS to update or remove Firefox possibly, instead of making a new ISO. These changes would appear as soon as your new/replacement add-on SFS is loaded, generally on rebooting with a pup_save file. Reboot in LiveCD mode first to move the old one to another folder or add a suffix like 'lhp-mar-02_215.sfs_save' to disable it.

I'm gonna sound really thick here but , how do you reboot (or close) Lighthouse Puppy? I couldn't find an entry for anything other than restarting Xservers and no desktop icon for closing down!
I've used various Puppies for over a year so I'm not a total newbie
Many thanks

K3b can't find mkisofs

#64 Post by melmc »

Although K3b works fine for audio CDs, today for the first time I tried to do a mixed format CD and it indicated it could not find mkisofs but I did a search in pfind and found that mkisofs is setting right in /usr/bin, a directory K3b is supposed to be searching in according to its settings. Is it looking for a different version of mkisofs and refusing to see the version installed?

Select Logoff from the menu which comes up when you click the lighthouse icon on the left bottom of your screen (where the start button is in windows). A menu will come up which allows you to select to poweroff or reboot.

How to Reboot; K3b can't find mkisofs

#66 Post by tazoc »

veronicathecow, Ditto what melmc wrote, try Logoff in your Menu. If you're at the keyboard you can also use Clrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace. In the latter case, (generally a last resort because it's more likely to close open apps without saving your work,) you'll need to type reboot or poweroff.

I've been trying to figure that out. K3b does not recognize mkisofs or genisoimage in pgs_K3b-12.17-02_215.sfs although 'which' command does see them. I was able to burn ISOs created outside of K3b. I'm looking for a solution to this and maybe readcd and transcode also.

:D your screen shot gave me an idea, try this: click on Quick Launch Menu (near Start on Taskbar) | Advanced Settings |IceWM Settings | Reload Start Menu

That will execute the script '/usr/sbin/fixmenus', same as if you'd typed 'fixmenus' in a terminal to rebuild the menu system.

I've been testing LIghthousePup on and off over the last few day. I am clearly impressed. Given my father in law's win2k system (which was setup with what appears to be a hacked version of windows, hence it can't be saved) crashed, I wanted to try to get him to consider Linux. I like what I've seen with LighthousePup, and I think it will meet his basic needs perfectly. If it seems he needs anything more, I can always set that up for him until he becomes more comfortable using Linux and doing things himself. Lighthouse looks great. Bravo Zulu on a job well done.
The only windows I have are those on my home.

Thank you Christopher, I appreciate that. I really feel Linux is better, faster, more secure and more efficient than other systems. It does have some shortcomings; hard core gaming, voice recognition and certain companies seem unwilling to release Linux-compatible software or drivers--yet fully support other systems.

But look at the incredible depth and variety of distros and liveCDs available, most at no cost to download. On the other end of the scale, NASA and the Dept of Defense look to http://www.linuxnetworx.com for supercomputing. Myself sometimes I feel like I'm really contributing to Puppy and Lighthouse and sometimes it's like I'm just grinding out the details or busy with other responsibilities or projects. It has to be fun most of the time or we wouldn't be doing this.

Bottom line, I think everyone is different and Linux is a better fit for some than for others. And of course Puppy rocks!
Regards, TazOC

Hi Tazoc, many thanks for this Puppy you have obviously put a huge amount of work into it to make it much more user friendly. The menu problem has been sorted thanks to the tip re menus
I've been playing with this and 2.20 both are excellent and a combination will probably bring me back from PC Linux (Very good but slow)
I hope you will do a version based on 2.20 with Firefox, Thunderbird , K3B and Openoffice. That would really cover all my needs.
To anyone who has not tried this version I cannot recommend it enough!
Many thanks
Tony

Tony,
Glad to hear your menu is okay now Tony. I'm including a fix in beta 5 that will make sure that Logoff entry is there and if not, the fixmenus script gets executed at logon.

I'm also testing Puppy 2.20 alpha. Can't get my eth0 connection to work on it yet, but am eager to test it with K3b and hopefully Lighthouse at some point. Thank you for your comments!

LighthousePup has become my new favorite Puppy. I was impressed when I saw StreamTuner with XMMS.
I boot from CD but have installed Mariner and K3B SFS and the work fine also Wine 0.0.28 SFS Im still workin on that. DOFUS and Foxit reader installed easly and quickly.
Cant wait for the next version

macadavy wrote:Congrats, TazOC, on the best Puppy yet IMHO!
Just a coupla minor glitches to report so far:
Running Shanghai Solitaire majongg game comes close to smoking my CPU. The culprit seems to be something called wish8.5 (usr/bin/wish8.5) which fires up two instances and kicks Xorg into overdrive: the CPU is maxed out at 100%!
The only other problem, again minor, is that audio streams (e.g. <a href="http://www.radioparadise.com"> ... radise</a>) stutter in Xmms when scrolling in web pages, also with Gxine, but not when played in RealPlayer10 - go figure!
That's it! This is one very polished beta, at this rate v1 will approach perfection! Certainly its head & shoulders above a certain other WAboy who foists his beta-testing on an unsuspecting public and overcharges them for their pains. ;-)
All Puppy is cake - but you've really put the icing on that cake!
To do list:
try out K3B (intigrate .sfs's in remaster?)
install & configure CUPS printing
download & install nVidia drivers & try out 3D
sys specs:
Lighthouse Puppy v2.15Sea_Mbeta4 + v2K3B & Mariner .sfs; Intel PIII 450mhz (o.c. to 600mhz); 512 Mb SDRAM; VIA ApolloPro130x mobo; C-Media CM8738 sndcd; Macronix MX987x5 LANcd; nVidia NV17 [GeForce4 MX 440] vidcd; 52x LG CD-R; 44x Yamaha CD-RW; 2x40G Samsung RAID HDs; 2.36G swap.
(Anyone know if there's a Puppy HW database where the above info can be posted for all to see? Feel free to copy & paste if such exists.)
I reckon the highest praise one can offer any developer is this: "It just works!" This is the best combination of beauty & utility I've ever seen.
btw - Since there's no PayPal link on your Lighthouse site (hint, hint!) I've taken the liberty of sending Barry K. a USD 25 contribution and I invite all Puppy lovers to match or better it... throw that dog a bone!
macadavy,
Thank you for your feedback and praise! Barry and many Puppy developers deserve most of the credit. I'm sure he will make good use of your contribution to further Puppy. I've been looking at some great improvements Barry and the team are working on in Puppy 2.20 pre-alpha in development.

I found the post you mentioned with the nice screenshots here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 488#139488

I have not tried Shanghai Solitaire but have seen strange effects with wish/TCL based apps in Lighthouse, though not quite sure why the CPU usage would spike as it did for you. What I observed was hundreds of whiteout files appearing with Puppy mixer, so I use zmixer instead.
(Edit 8 Sept 07) Same problem with Shanghai on my machine; 100% CPU. As muggins suggested I've replaced it with xmahjongg including a .desktop file so that it will be in the menus for beta 5.

Jactek, thanks also for your comments. I haven't had a chance to play with Wine in Lighthouse. I can't wait for myself to get busy and finish up with beta 5 as well. Probably sounds kinda strange me saying that. I'm struggling a bit with potential upgrade vs. clean install issues but the changes are fairly minor so hopefully it won't matter.

John Biles, thank you very much! Just this week I was looking at TEENpup at my buddies place. He was running Lighthouse and decided try something else and so I went over and checked it out as well. I think it's so cool how Puppy encourages custom builds and everyone contributing what they know best. Keep up the good work!
Take care everyone,

First off, lighthouse seems to be really great! From the little that I have played with it there are alot of little things that make it quick, and very usable. I would like to install it to my usbhd if I can get past an issue.

I have not been able to spend a lot of time tinkering with it because Xorg is not working for me and Xvesa comes up in what looks like 640x480 and doesn't show the whole desktop. On Xorg I have tried manually most of the settings and tweaks in the xorgwizard and also manually edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to my monitor refresh rates with no luck. My wife and children use TeenPup on the same computer with no problem, in fact that is what I am using now.

Can you give me some help with this, are there log files you would like me to quote? It is booting from CD, BTW.

Hi Bahurim,
Welcome and thank you for your comments and feedback.
Have you tried this Xvesa interim fix?

Open /root/.xinitrc with a text editor and comment out line starting with 'xrandr -s' and the two lines before it (should be lines # 10, 11, 12) like this:

Code: Select all

#XRANDRINDEX=`expr 0`
#[ -f /etc/xrandrindex ] && XRANDRINDEX="`cat /etc/xrandrindex`"
#xrandr -s "`expr $XRANDRINDEX + 1`" ; usleep 100000 && xrandr -s $XRANDRINDEX
then save the changes to .xinitrc
exit X to command line.
Type:

Code: Select all

rm -f /etc/videomode
xorgwizard
Xvesa should work much better now, Xorg might also be improved, not sure about that.

I'm working on an updated version of Lighthouse 215 beta 5 with Xvesa fix and other improvements.

Tazoc,
Thanks for the tip, I should have seen that in all the docs and tips you give. Anyway, that worked, it also allowed Xorg to come up, hope that info helps. Before I asked help on the forum here I tried commenting out the randr & xtrap lines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which didn't work.

Thanks again for the tip, lovin the puppy and all the eyecandy. I installed lighthouse to my usbhd along with Mariner and am using it now. Awesome! :D Beta5 sounds good so far and I hope you will base further lighthouse pups on 'talking stick' or 'happy'. Sounds like alot of great stuff Barry is doing.

Yes, thank you for the update Mike. I'm glad your Xorg and Xvesa is working now. Nice to hear about your good results with usbhd, too. I may order some sd memory this week to play around with my usb adapters and Lighthouse. So far the only one I have is for my old mp3 player and it's full!
