Minimal puppy distro |
|
Hello all!
Not posted here in ages! I have been using puppy "off-and-on" for a little while now, since the older 1.x versions; my main distro is Slackware 11 (32-bit) and Slamd64 (64-bit).
But what I was thinking of is this -- maybe this is a good idea for a distro or prehaps someone's already done it?
How's about having some sort of minimal version of puppy with no apps (but with all the drivers and X windows as normal and a window manager (xfce? ) ) but also with the ability to add extra files (dot pups?) to it so it can be expanded, and that it could also be remastered or installed to HD -- a sort of "opt-in" system.
I understand there's puppy unleashed which lets you choose how much (or how little) you want to install, but it is very hard to know which files you can remove and which ones would be needed. Sort of an "opt-out" system I guess?
Can such a thing whereby files are added, rather than removed be created or does such a puppy distro already exist?

Give MicroMuppy a try. I'm not sure what version of puppy it's based on though.

I checked out micropuppy, pretty cool. I also noticed in one of the threads a mention of "picopuppy", a puppy with no gui. I am almost tempted to see if I can't try my hand at creating that puppy, but I think I would mess it up, so I will leave it for somebody else. I still remember puppy 0.7. That was the distro that helped me to save my church's website and keep up on e-mail for nearly three months when my hard drive crashed. Prior to that I was a redhat user. I recently gave pclinuxos a test drive. I was less than impressed. I am now staying with puppy. Still, the idea of a "picopuppy" with links as its standard web browser is a tempting idea.....

well, if somebody else has already done it, then I guess I don't have to. I may try creating a puppy based on a thread I started elsewhere, but I need to learn more about robot control software........

Completely forgot about this post! Oops !
I did look at micromuppy though it seemed to have problems, most noticably alsa won't configure properly. Also I wonder how much it'll work with modern stuff being 1.x based (though I really only need the basics: screen (no 3d!), sound, hd, keyboard, mouse). I looked at picopup too, but it has no X at all x.x . Barelypup comes in at ~30MB and I wonder if I can knock that filesize down a bit? It's almost as big as "normal" puppy with the drivers!
(Slightly OT: I found this http://gentoo-wiki.com/TinyGentoo for making a 'tiny gentoo' linux but it seems to be *very* complicated x.x ) .
A refinement/change of my idea in the original post -- I was thinking about getting hold of an emulator -- let's say VICE's x64 (C64) emulator, and then have a very small puppy start X and boot x64 automatically. No other apps, just the emulator.
I did thinking about using puppy unleased (will that do what I'm thinking of?) but it's knowing just which files to remove and to keep -- very confusing x.x .

I am sure you are aware of Barry's page
http://www.puppyos.com/puppy-unleashed.htm
these are my efforts at using unleashed - will have another go soon
http://tmxxine.com/Wikka/wikka.php?wakka=LinuxTmxxineUnleashed
Once set up and using the unleashed script, it is indeed useful to know what packages do, otherwise the defaults are best

I'll have a look at your page there and yeah I've seen barry's page there. It's just working out what can be removed -- only thing I'm thinking of is how can you work out what can (and can't) be removed? Sometimes there's dependency problems, i.e. package X can depend on Y and Y on X so how can I work out can be removed?

Hi ljones!
There is a fat free version of puppy 2.17 and it looks so great for a minimal distro. ISO is only 53M.
Big Bass did it very well.

I have dreamt about this before - would be a really great idea. I do not want to spend any money to get some C64 hardware but would really like to show my son how I spent my youth - and maybe we could both try to get some little BASIC programs running or even a simple game. Anyway.
How can we procede? Did you try to get something running? Even if it has some unnecessary bits and pieces in the first version. No problem, can be stripped off later.
Any ideas welcome,
Friedl

There are several 'minimal' Puppys. Check 'em out here, where all the Puplets are listed: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puplets

Is this still the case? I know that this thread is pretty old so I thought I'd ask what minimal Puppy releases there are nowadays. I really just want a minimal system that I can add those apps I need to.
