How to configure GAIM for Google Talk?

#4 Post by eddie_konczal »

Has anyone figured out how to do this (How to configure GAIM for Google Talk?) I am using Puppy 2.15. I have a gmail account. I am a bit confused :? because when I launch Gaim (MSN/Yahoo/IRC/ICQ/Jabber) from the menu, something called "freenode-connect" comes up and I don't see a way to add the gmail account.

You will need an account with a messaging service in the list below.
It is not the same as email, it is for realtime written chat.

You need to cancel the IRC chat, and go to Accounts on the Gaim start page. Options are;

AIM/ICQ
Gadu-Gadu
Groupwise
IRC
Jabber
MSN
Napster
Yahoo
Zephyr

I know that Gaim is for realtime written chat, not email. But for GoogleTalk Chat, you log in to the chat with your gmail address and password.

I can't figure out which of the above IRC services works for GoogleTalk. Also, I do not find mention of GAIM on GoogleTalk's web site.

Google Talk

@Eddie

Google Talk is still in beta and seems to be windows only. Following taken from web page;
http://www.google.com/talk/
http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html
Google Talk is an instant communications service that enables you to quickly and easily send instant messages or make PC-to-PC voice calls to your friends for free. There are two ways to use Google Talk. You can add the Google Talk Gadget to your Google Personalized Homepage to see your contacts list and IM your friends on your Google homepage.
The Google Talk Gadget is a web-based tool for instant messaging, so it requires no download (as long as you have Flash Player 8.0 or above installed).
If you're signing into Google Talk with a Gmail account, your Gmail contacts are pre-loaded and the people you communicate with most often will show up in your Google Talk Friends list. In addition, Gmail will archive your Google Talk chats
You can connect to the Google Talk service using Google's own client, as well as many other IM clients developed by third parties.
(Pidgin, Kopete, Psi for linux)
I do not know anything about these - too old for IM - but try a forum search for Pidgin,etc as there are .pups and .pets for puppy that may work.
Also TeenPup 2.0. comes with Kopete and Gaim2 already - may be worth a look, my daughter uses Teenpup 1.0 all the time.
