Lighthouse215SeaM ISO draws heavily on Mark Ulrich's Muppy, Puppy 2.15CE as well as quite a few icons and influences of KDE--without the full set of libraries and accompanying size and speed limitations of KDE in a typical Debian framework. I'm especially grateful to MU and everyone at Puppy and Grafpup that made Lighthouse possible. Thank you!
IceWM 1.2.30 is the default window manager; JWM available also. Default media player-MuppyMplayer, Default text editor-Geany. Many new icons in menus and Rox-Filer 2.6 are 128x128 pixels from SuperGPLiconPak. Re-arranged and enlarged the start menu icons. New Logoff panel in IceWM and WM switcher from JWM shutdown menu. Window Manager Menu has: Refresh menus (inc. fixmenus,) Restart IceWM, Restart X, and Switch to JWM.
11 enhanced desktop Icons with contextual, customizable menus, tooltips, show/hide icons & Quick Launch menu. Autoraise windows after delay and sloppy pointer focus by default. Updated Recycle Bin with view size and contents option, tooltip, sound. New Connection Manager from right click Browse icon or IceWM taskbar network graph, displays status, connect/disconnect network, choose connection wizard. SeaMonkey, Flash9, MuppyIceDock, XMMS, GQView, Conky, New Themes, Wallpapers, Shadows, Cursors, Fonts, LookAndFeel Settings Rox Panel, 3DCC, Grafburn, PSI (Puppy-Software-Installer), Gslapt, PB-Debian-installer, TestDisk, PhotoRec. 'Backported' from Puppy 2.16.1: Connection Wizard, XorgWizard, PMount. Kernel and Init Scripts are identical to Puppy 2.15CE.
I am updating Pizzagood's Edit-SFS and new CopyTo-Edit-SFS for Rox-Filer context menu on any .sfs file. (Edit 7/22) This is work in progress...
(Edit 7/16) - RXVT-lhp Terminal - Switchable extended color prompt. Color doesn't wrap properly beyond 80 chars or so but normal long (. psl) and short (. pss) work fine. Standard Rxvt Terminals also available and work normally.

Code: Select all

Type '. psl' or '. pss' and press [Enter], (note the space after '.'). Type '. psc' to switch back to color.
New 'phelp' Command Line/Terminal quick start, pupver 'ver' Software versions, pup_dip automatic shutdown cleanup script.
sometimes the screen that pops up at start leaves a little blue box behind about the size of an icon. this has only happened in lighthouse.
(Edit 8/7)The blue box is wmfire, an icedock cpu monitor that sometimes refuses to dock. When docked it shows flames relative to CPU activity. Usually Start Menu|Desktop|Muppy-icedock will restart Icedock and temporarily fix wmfire. Here's how to enable/disable any of the dockapps, including wmfire:
Start Menu|Desktop|LookAndFeel|Muppy-icedock-wizard|dockapps|choose dockapps. De-select wmfire. OK to apply, Muppy Icedock will stop and after some time, restart with the new configuration. When finished, click cancel. Note: wmtemp and wmpower aren't supported on some systems, so you may want to de-select those as well.
(Edit 7/22) Xvesa Interim Fix: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 936#129936
CD-Rom Boot Menu includes Memtest86 v3.3

If you already have Puppy please reboot fully in RAM with your Puppy CD, typing at the boot menu 'puppy pfix=ram'. Move or back up your pup_save file to another folder before booting LighthousePup. Sometimes a backup can be a lifesaver!

(Edit 7/30) Lighthouse Mariner SFS lhp-mar-02_215.sfs designed to complement the ISO (FireFox and Opera 9.22 with Flash 9, OpenOffice 2.2 Full, CUPS Printing and more)
Note: The Mariner SFS is designed for Lighthouse and does not function well in Puppy apart from Lighthouse. See Puppy v2.15CE: www.puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppy215Downloads -- bottom of page for SFS files designed for official Puppy.

Outstanding eye candy. I could almost imagine myself running my Mac Powerbook with that one screenshot. It goes to show what Puppy can do with some add ons for astetics. I'm sure it will be a hit with many people. I'm also impressed that it's under 200 meg in size too. Seems like there are always more puppys to add to my kennel. Currently downloading 2.17 beta to try the updated dialup features and see if i can get my printer to finally work in Puppy with Cups. Great to see some of Mark's Muppy was incorperated into your version. Will have to download this one in the next week or so to try it out.
Penguin, the OTHER white meat.

Can't get connection to networks ?

#4 Post by Tui »

Hi taoc, I have done a d/l and run with pfix=ram, I like the
eye candy it all looks cool! I have not been able to get get the network
wiz to work, it finds my motherboard on board enet chipset, but
this setting up window has things missing to complete the setup.

I have also tried the new window (I think it's new I haven't seen it before)
that is the "AUTODHCP -CONNECT", I still can't complete the connection.
with the STATIC IP, TEST and DHCP all missing -- What am I doing
wrong thats changed from V2.15CE; V2.16; and v2.17BETA they all
run and detect ok!

I have not tested my wireless card yet, so can't report on that, also
can't get the prog GQVIEW to load up! Have you tested all the progs
you show before uploading to server ? Are there other progs not
working but shown in menu form?

Otherwise I like!

Tui,
Thanks for your feedback. Right-click on Browse Icon | Connect to Internet. On the AutoDHCP Window, click on Connection Wizard | click Apply. That should bring up the same Internet Connection Wizard from 2.16. I've tested it on three PCs with no problems, both LiveCD and frugal install mode.

Note: The AutoDHCP Manager Connect/Disconnect only works after using the Connection Wizard to make the initial driver setup, and I think it only works for network adapters. All official Puppy connection tools should be available through Setup Wizards and Internet/Network Menus.

Open a terminal and type: which connectwizard [Enter]
you should see: /usr/sbin/connectwizard
also with: which net-setup.sh

then type; connectwizard [Enter]

If the Connection Wizard does not work, be sure that you've moved any old copies of pup_215.sfs, zdrv_215.sfs and pup_save.2fs from the drive where your previous pup_save file was. I'm assuming you've already checked the md5 on the ISO before you burned it?

I will do some checking on GQview and let you know. It's working right here but I have some SFS files loaded so I'll unload them and check again. Keep me informed on your progress.

Hi tazoc,
Ah, the scent of salt and a fresh sea breeze, and that indefinable whiff of ozone. But, no seagulls! Marvellous stuff. You are to be congratulated, 'Lighthouse Pup' is a full eyecatcher.
I haven't done an extensive run-through but, I can confirm that for me GQView is working without any problems; as is AutoDCHP.
Thanks,

Fossil

Thanks willhunt, I'm glad to hear from someone with experience as yourself that has given Lighthouse a run-through.

LOL Fossil, now that I think about it, I guess there aren't any seagulls! I miss the coast. Thank you for your comments.
Tui, I rebooted in LiveCD without my .sfs files and also confirmed GQView works.

I'm working on a Mariner SFS file for Lighthouse with FF, OOo22, GIMP, pgs graphics, K3b and more but its already over 300MB so I may have to divide it up like was done for 2.15CE and that will take some time.
I'm not sure about Opera and flash, it doesn't seem to like flash 9 in Puppy and I haven't had a chance to try flash 7 on it. I'd rather keep it all it on one SFS so that I can make another Voyager SFS with full KDE but bandwidth concerns me. Just got to get something with FF, GIMP and K3b out and go from there I think.

Hmm, bad sound play back with what app? choppy or distorted or nothing? Streaming or mp3 or CDaudio or wav or video? I'm curious what sound card, cpu & chipset if known.
Did the Alsa wizard give any error messages?

I have to tell you my experience with sound problems is limited, anyone else feel free to help out here. Lighthouse is based on and has the same zdrv_215.sfs as Puppy2.15CE.
One thing I have found interesting for drivers is Start | System | System Status | Pupscan. Hit the drop-down and look for kernel modules that begin with snd or sound. Xproc is in that System Status Menu also.

Lighthouse Pup and 2.15CE pfix=ram dont work, it mount's the save file reguardless.

Code: Select all

kernel (hd0,2)/boot/puppy-lh/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd ro vga=normal psubdir=/boot/puppy-lh pfix=ram"

That's because you are applying it incorrectly. pfix=ram is a boot parameter that needs to be executed BEFORE you have attempted to load anything else, including the kernel. It is chosen from the LiveCD.

If you want to boot a hard disk install without using its pup_save.2fs file, then you have to create a second dummy pup_save.2fs so you will be given the option of which one to choose.

2.15CE acts differently than 2.16? 2.16 with pfix=ram doesn't mount save file, but 2.15CE mounts regardless?

??
What has "pfix=ram" got to do with the live-cd? It goes to the init script and should work regardless of what you're booting from.

If anything, I'd say the problem is he's got a quote (") stuck to it (assuming it didn't appear when he pasted it here...).

I'm not sure. Anybody seen this problem before? I don't have any Intel machines to test on. willlhunt, can you pm me the entire /tmp/xerrs.log from that machine? Or post as an attachment. I'd like to see if there are any relevant errors/warnings. I'd do it after a fresh reboot and playing of those stuttering mice

Also please type in a terminal and post output:

Code: Select all

depmod
modprobe -l sound*
modprobe -l snd*
modprobe --show-depends snd-intel8x0
cat "/var/log/messages" | grep 'snd'
The last two lines are a guess. I'm trying to see if we have all the necessary kernel modules loaded on that machine. Hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree here.
Oh, make sure the MAD MPEG Decoder Plugin is disabled in XMMS Preferences | Audio Plugins. When testing on that machine make sure XMMS is closed and not listed in the Process List (click on CPU graph next to date on IceWM taskbar.) If xmms-... is running select it and click Hang Up in gPS Process List, repeating until xmms is all gone. I'd start with the file types in in /usr/share/audio.

hi there!

1st of all - the screenshots look cool - seemingly a promising puppy derivate!

i wanted to test this derivate by myself - using vmware player - i´ve tested several puppy derivates this way before - but this one doesn´t work - i can´t choose a resolution of my like... i use XVESA of course...

here are 2 screenshots:

I got the same thing as dWLkR in vmware right down to the screen shots.
When I tried it as a Live CD booting the PC , I selected VESA and was given no provision to set the screen resolution The displayed text was huge and would not fit on my monitor. I looked at the XORG configuration file and it showed my 19" monitor as being 300 X 380 mm. Since I don't know how to convert 1024X768 to mm specs I gave up for now. I could not find anything to set the screen resolution so for now, the CD is just so much trash. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

First - kudos on this great release!!

Yeah i am not able to use Xvesa....the resolution looks to be about 150 x 100 (!!!) '' and i can't get around easily....i managed to locate the 1024 x 768 button and clicked it, but it did not reset the resolution. This happens on two different machines, one is a PII (or equivalent) w/ 268 mb RAM, the other is a PIII equivalent w/ just onder 400 mb RAM. It does work well with Xorg, however! Except i can't get it to do the multisession CD. My unit is a little funny that way so unless others have this problem, fuggetaboutit. This optorite CD-RW is not generally recognized in Linux but i am happy to say that the newer puppies are able to burn regular CDs -- including Lighthouse.
