Freeciv 2.1.0 Beta 4

#1 Post by Gekko »

is a free turn-based multiplayer strategy game, in which each player becomes the leader of a civilization, fighting to obtain the ultimate goal:
To become the greatest civilization.

Players of the Civilization® series by Microprose® should feel at home, since one aim of Freeciv is to have optional modes (called rulesets) with compatible rules.

Freeciv is maintained by an international team of coders and enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive network games out there!

That also means it has very extensive multilanguage support, something rare in games.

I have compiled both the SDL and GTK version of this game.

The SDL version is slightly buggy in places (such as going back in the menu at the beginning) and is hard to use if not in fullscreen, but has many more GUI aspects such as buttons for movement and building.

The GTK version is slightly smaller, less buggy but has a slightly less nice GUI. There are still menu options for building things, but it is much easier to learn the hotkeys.

You cannot have both versions installed at the same time - they will overlap. Requires SDL (click here.)

Hi Gekko,

Thanks for the FreeCiv pet. I really don't like asking seemingly simple questions but... How do I start the FreeCiv GTK version? :?

Thanks!

Will make love for help. (?)

Not too bad. The keyboard interface is similiar to what I remember from the Civilization game I used to play back in high school. I would like to know how I can pick what nation I am. It keeps forcing me to be the aztecs.
The only windows I have are those on my home.

I have download and installed the GTK version on Puppy Linux 3.01.

It starts up easily and operates from the su spot configuration.

The opening menu seems askew. The options are below the graphic screen. And there is no quit option on the opening menu. I tried a higher screen resolution but the same effect is observed.

I am assuming that these options should be centered in the graphic.

Anyway of placing the options in their appropriate location.

Thanks.

Hey thanks for compiling it. I have civ 4 installed on my windows machine and its great to see a free version of civilization.

Its very interesting that civ 4 ships with source code, think theres a way to compile it for puppy? (just a question, I would never break copyright laws)
