Can this be done with Puppy?

a motion detector such as here:
http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Mo ... edProjects

or here
http://www.zoneminder.com/

We don't have .pets for this

first set up your webcams . . .
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 08&t=11587

OK I have cobbled together a PC and two
Any advice welcome . . . am not able to compile zoneminder

Which was the last Puppy that webcam support was compiled for?

:)

I've been using Zoneminder for a number of years now, it really is very good.
I can monitor my home from any pc anywhere in the world, even from my phone (XDA exec, a pocket PC phone).

I installed Zoneminder again last year after a hardware failure, and think i took some notes, youre welcome to a copy of them, this was using Debian though, not puppy.

I always wanted to do a .pet for puppy, but just never found the time.

There are loads of dependencies required, and it is notoriously difficult to install the first time round.
Once installed though it is rock solid.

I'm willing to offer advice and help if you want to have a go at installing it. (creating a pet should be simple enough after that).

If you PM me i could let you visit my running server, and allow you guest priviliges to see how good the system is.

Many thanks for you offer of notes and help :)

I intended to use Debian as the basis . . .
I had installed DSL (which becomes a Debian system once on the HD from what I understand . . .) The reason is I am using a 1 Gig HD and DSL recognised my hardware . . .

Would I get Debian on that (easily)
I tried Mint and Ubuntu (Debian based) and they did not recognise the hardware - DSL did

In which case I would appreciate the help :)

OK I would like to keep part of it here in the public domain . . .
others may be interested in having a go too . . . :)

Many thanks this part I will PM you about

Debian will fit onto your 1GB drive, however that may not be the way to go, for a number of reasons.

1) We should create a Puppy version :)
2) You need as much space as possible for captured images (my drive has been full a number of times). Another reason for puppy.
3) There is a "live CD " version already available, thats built on Suse.
4) Debian is difficult to install Zoneminder on, I only chose it because of it's reliability (like one debian server we had running for 18 months without a reboot), and because i knew it well.
5) We should create a Puppy version :).

I agree, lets keep this in the public domain and create a .Pet.

If i get time i will download the source tonight, and try to compile and see what errors it show up.

BTW, this software works with virtually ANY camera, even webcams can be used for monitoring and motion detection.

I actually now need another Zoneminder system as i need to monitor another part of my business, so now is an ideal time for me to look at this again.

System secured

#5 Post by Lobster »

:D

Ideal HushPuppy :)

I have now got the hardware working OK and the hard drive partitioned

I tried, Antix Mepis, Xubuntu and Ubuntu - none worked. Only DSL worked on this old hardware. I installed DSL to HD (so that is Debian but now Grub needed to boot) . . .

Can forget all that stuff . . .

OK looking at Puppy, I think the best bet is to use Puppy 2.16.1 (I'll be using Linux Tmxxine) and set up my webcams

I think the webcam software would need to be recompiled for 2.17/2.18 because of the new kernel?

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 9670#72218

How exciting. I think I will also set up it up with a variety of sound effects to disorient potential intruders . . .

Something along the lines of

"STAND STILL
SCAN COMPLETE"
Intruder detected
Use of deadly force authorised
. . . in 10 seconds

Use of Deadly force will commence in 8 secods
Armed response unit activated

Use of Deadly force will commence in 6 seconds
Perimeter defences activated in 4 seconds

LAY DOWN AND AWAIT AUTHORIED SECURITY PERSONEL
WARNING DEFENCE SYSTEMS ACTIVE IN TWO SECONDS

SYSTEM SECURED"

What do you think?

LOL Lobster! You're too much! That's hilarious! :D It'll either scare any intruders away and get the word out by mouth, "Leave that guy's house alone! He's got a security system like you wouldn't believe!"---or it'd cause them to drop dead from a heart attack.

In either way you've achieved your ultimate goal: The protection of your property via "Guard-Puppy". LOL! (Can't call it "Guarddog" as there's already a firewall by that name isn't there?)

This is indeed a fascinating project! Kind of reminds me of a friend who years ago had his computer set up so when he'd sneeze it would say back, "Bless you... Dave."

Amicalement,

I rather like the idea of blessing intruders

How about this script:

"Thank you for breaking into this facility
Unfortunately nothing of any value is available

If you have the time . . .
We will be with you shortly with some gifts
that will make your break in worthwhile

Please wait patiently"

Lobster, i wouldnt bother with any of those warnings, complete waste of time.

Just have the sound of a SHOTGUN, followed by i'm coming you b******s , then another couple of shots just for luck.

I reckon that will have more effect. :)

I've downloaded the source for zoneminder, and the first thing to do is to install MySQL, including the header files. I've not seen a .pet for Mysql yet, but will have a look tomorrow pm, if in the meantime you find one, can you send me the url.

I think it's likeley we will have to create our own though.

BTW, i've added a couple more cameras to the sytem today, so if you want to go take a look feel free. If by any chance you can't access the page, let me know, as my router sometimes doesnt seem to route that port correctly.

sounds of a shotgun could result in an armed response unit turning up
ah two birds with one stone . . .

thanks for access to your system

:)

this is quite big

update on my setup
I need a new network card but have set up a router to connect to the network on a test machine. Works great with Puppy compared with DSL and all the easy Debians dektops (none of which worked)

Bit of an update on progress.

I've started to try and compile zoneminder for Puppy, but at the moment am a bit stuck. I've installed Mysql and Apache, both of which seem to be working fine, (theyre a requirement), then when i try and run configure from the zm source directory i get an error about not being able to find mysql.h, despite it being available.

Will update if i get any success.

That means that you need the mysql headers. You could either get them from the original source package or from a deb/rpm pkg. The package name would be something like mysql-devel..... If you do have the file on your system you may have to tell the configure where to find it. Try ./configure --help

Just saying hi. I normally dwell in the Grafpup section here and on 'the other place' (linux-questions.org)

I have been using 'motion' under Grafpup on a VIA EPIA system since Spring 2007 and before that on a Linksys NSLU2 running Openslug. It's task is a security camera and file server, I wrote scripts myself to produce daily reports etc and manage storage.

I run a 3 IP camera system myself so I'm quite familiar with the motion program. I can offer configuration help or tips if needed, but I don't use mySql myself, sorry.

My EPIA system boots Grafpup from a CF card in IDE adapter, and all the 'real' HDDs are used for data (motion's recordings, and files to be served).

I've also written a couple of patches for motion (Kenneth's Wiki has a separate section for patches, so if Motion doesn't quite act how you want, you can submit additional program code in the form of a patch). My user name over there = SimonW.

Cheers,
Simon.

:) I am having to replace floorboards at the moment - so giving this project the time to test and support others efforts is not always possible :)

However I hope projects like RoboPup will find the motion detection system useful . . .
