Via VT6655 wifi on puppy 2.13

#1 Post by jeef »

Has anyone got this wireless card, which comes with the ebox 2300, working in puppy linux 2.13?

I downloaded the drivers from the VIA website (link provided on this forum) but the linux drivers are for the 2.4 kernel. And the windows drivers (in the ndis wrapper) did not work.

Has anyone had any luck?

The driver package here

http://drivers.viaarena.com/VT6655%20So ... (v1.3).zip

seems to list a binary driver for a 2.6 kernel

Code: Select all

**

**

** VIA Networking Solomon-A/B/G Wireless LAN Adapter

**

** Linux Driver (binary release)

**

** v1.16 Apr 2006

**

**

Introduction:

=============

The instructions listed below are for linux driver installation. You must complier the source

and follow the installation steps to setup your card.

Contents of the Subdirectory:

=============================

    linux.txt This file.

sta.wlan Station wireless settings script file.

remove Remove driver module shell script.

ap.wlan Access point wireless settings script file.

ap.remove AP mode remove shell script.

Makefile Makefile for install driver & utility

    \driver\Makefile Makefile for driver

\driver\viawget.ko The binary driver module for kernel 2.6.x

\solomon\device_module.c The network device module functions

\solomon\device_exp.h The hardware dependent exported functions

\solomon\device_module.h The device module function declaration

\solomon\x86g_up.o The partial driver object for kernel 2.4.x

\solomon\x86g_smp.o The partial driver object for kernel 2.4.x, smp build

\utility\wetctl.c The source code of wireless utility

\utility\wetctl.h The header file of wireless utility

    \include\device_cfg.h The driver configuration header

\include\iocmd.h The private command interface header

    \include\type.h The type definition header

    \wpa_supplicant\wpa_supplicant-0.3.8-patch.tar.gz

The pactched wpa_supplicant for 'viawget' driver

But my Microclient loads with puppy 2.11. So I had better update it to the latest puppy for this ebox.

You'd think the wireless would work out of the box on their shipping unit, even though it's an option. Oh well.

This has been discussed before http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 3554#93554
The binary Linux drivers are for various Fedora versions, and the Windows drivers don't seem to work with ndiswrapper.

I understand that the wifi adaptor is miniPCI, so it should be removable (no wifi chip has been built onto a motherboard to date).
So I recommend you open up the eBox and replace the wifi adaptor with a miniPCI wifi card from Ralink, Intel, or Atheros (in that order of preference).

I opened up the archive and that "driver" directory doesn't exist in the archive (or inside the tarball)

(tempestuous: I started this thread rather then fully thread-jacking that other thread, I prolly shouldn't have posted in the other thread to begin with?)

For those interested:

I contacted Norhtec and they sent me the same drivers, version 1.1 and instructed I used the windows driver with the ndiswrapper. I'm sure I exhausted all options (with 1.3 of the driver) using the ndiswrapper but I may have missed one? At any rate, the driver in 1.1 does appear to work.

Only problem now is only WEP and no WPA-psk

Is the 1.1 version of the driver available for download anywhere? All I can find is the 1.3 version.

Thanks!

jeef, if you email the zip file to me we can put it on minipup.info where Minipup and other Puppy derivatives as well as utilities for the eBox and other thin clients can be downloaded.

Methinks Raspberry Pi were ideal for runnin' Puppy Linux
