I need chinese input and fonts

#1 Post by cb88 »

I recently did a furgal install of puppy on a friend's laptop he wants chinese input and fonts to display in semonkey or firefox. I can't make heads or tails of the instructions in chinese and it seems that some of the required(?) dotpups are not avilable for download. I think he wants chineses simplified or both.

cb88 - thanks in advance

scim-chinese_0.4.2.pup
scim_1.0.2.pup
cse_0.0.2.pup
scim_tables_zh_0.4.3.pup

copied a few .ttf files to /root/.fonts and /usr/share/fonts/defaults/ttf

installed these dotpups and got partial chinese support may be a problem with my fonts.

I need a good simple easy to read and legible font the ones I found apparently are not so good as all the characters are not displayed and they are hard for my friend to read.

also the more complete the font set the better any and all sugestion welcome

I am using 2.16 will upgrade to 2.17 when it comes out.

basically, you need to put some unicode fonts in a folder like /root/.fonts ... see: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LanguageSupport

the fonts in http://www.ipd.uka.de/~muelle/ARIALUNI.zip are probably not the absolute best, but they seem to work

then shut down and restart Firefox

its probably a good idea to disable antialiasing, too

I am downloading those fonts now maybe they will be a little better at least The largest font I had previously downloaded was 10Mb uncompressed

how do I disable antialiasing?

will abiword use the new fonts or will open office be necessary?

i'm not sure if this works properly, but you can try typing in the Firefox url address box:

about:config

type antialias in the filter box ... set:

font.antialias.min

to a large number, like 24 or 36 or something

i think the trick is to find some nice clear fonts, and to configure them so that they stay sharp

the fonts also can be configured in the file /etc/fonts/local.conf

yes, Abiword and other gtk2 programs should be able to use those fonts

i don't know if these links are useful or not:
