OK, I'm not posting the rest of it at the moment, as the people at LinuxQuestions.org told me that the problem was in the first few lines... Gave updating glibc a try...at least I think it was a newer version, not totally sure. OK....forgive me for sounding stupid... what's this thing about NPTL or TLS?

Anyway, I can't get WINE to start (if you haven't figured that out already) in Grafpup...

A page fault on write usually indicates an attempt t write outside page where it is allowed to.
I get this sometimes as well.
Could be something in your graf_save file.
You could do a fschk on it (file system check)

Ummm, you didn't mention.
In any case the cause still is an attempt to write beyond an allowed page.
I think it's like the Blue Scree of Death in Windows.
But difficult to say what the cause can be.

Well the people at LinuxQuestions.org were telling me to upgrade glibc...were they wrong?

OK...did a google search part of the error message "without NPTL or TLS is not a supported combination"...

came across someone who had the same problem. But the fix was to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel. Isn't Grafpup already running the 2.6 kernel?

So, anyone have a clue what's going on? Nathan? I guess Nathan might be busy...

I don't know if these people are right or wrong.
I addressed the same issue here and didn't get a solution, but in my case it didn't stop wine from working correctly.
For the record, I did change the glibc, but I still got the same message, but I didn't have the segment fault one.

Why don't you address the issue also in the grafpup forum?

I did, as I already stated. The Grafpup frorum is now on LinuxQuestions.org.

I had someone upset with me because there was much more text (more than I posted here) and he said I was wasitng bandwidth. But I don't think this person was officially affiliated with LinuxQuestions.org and definitely not someone who knew much about Grafpup.

jcagle,
I didn't know grafpup forum is there now. Haven't been there for quite some time.
Sorry to hear you got 'shouted' at.

Well someone is helping me out there now. He gave me a link to download the glibc 2.6 package and info on how to compile it with NPTL and TLS support.

Well, I decided to try a WINE package from dotpups.de

And so, it worked.

I'm not sure what was going on with the WINE package from the grafpup repository.

Nathan finally came on line...he was preoccupied with other things and couldn't get to the board sooner. He pretty much told me not to listen to the others who had given me advice on the LinuxQuestions board. Their advice would have done more harm than good.

Glad for you it worked.
Which one did you use finally?

Good to know also on the LinuxQuestions board.

same issue using Wine-0.9.28.pup

#16 Post by heartbone »

This is my first post and I am excited about how nice Puppy is.

In WINE ( Wine-0.9.28.pup in 2.15 CE) I can run some simple Windows apps but others (full screen graphics) blow up.

Code: Select all

wine:
glibc >= 2.3 without NPTL or TLS is not a supported combination.
It will most likely crash. Please upgrade to a glibc with NPTL support
I get the message printed twice in the same window after exiting the winecfg program.

I am a Linux beginner and just found this topic through a Google search of the error message.
This thread was the first link returned although even there are other Linux flavors with the problem as well.
I had just registered here yesterday!

Kindly explain the fix assuming that I know only a little.
