Warning to all laptop users...

#1 Post by jdumont »

Just a heads up but i installed puppy 2.12 to a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300
4340 system unit
model:PS434C-3N156
laptop is always plugged in as the battery is weak.
The laptop gets it's settings in windows from a toshiba power utility in windows and I suspect that is why the fan is not blowing.
When I say install I mean that I am booting off the cd and saved the pup_save.3fs (512mb) file to an ntfs partition.
The bios settings for the cpu fan are set to maximum performance (meaning it should be blowing often).
The fan does blow on startup, reboot and when I opt to shut down but that is it.
I just don't want anyone frying their laptop. As always.... contemplate.

A fair warning, and much appreciated by some I'm sure.

I found that, regardless of operating system, my laptop fan didn't run if I was working from CD and I was plugged in to mains power. That meant that long sessions from a LiveCD like Puppy's were going to get pretty darn hot!

The solution, for me at least, was in the laptop's BIOS. I found a setting that put the fan into "always on" mode while plugged into mains power. That solved the problem. 8)

Hope that helps others too.

Thx for the heads up,

Just got ver 2.12 going live (d-link dwl-g122 ver b usb wifi) on a gateway mx 3410 amd turion 64x2.

Have been at 'er steady for ~ the last 5 hours. Cant hear the fan goin but payin attention now. Nevertheless, checked around & lap doesn't feel hot at all.

DVD player barely spins up (once in a blue moon).

There were a couple of threads on this forum discussing temperature and fan monitoring. Puppy has all the tools for doing that, it is just a matter of setting it up. There was also some work on a taskbar thingy for that, but I think we put it on hold, not default in Puppy, as it can cause problems with some hardware.

Puppy tends to run cooler than many other systems, at least partly because the hard disk does not work much - or at all in many cases.
So the fan may not run very often. On my laptop, the fan starts to run when the temp. reaches ~75C and stops at ~55C. The machine would shut down if the temp. reached 90C. Currently the temp. is 53C after 30mins. of running with wireless.
You can check the temperature in various ways, but here is one:

Make sure that ACPI is operational - start Puppy with acpi=force if it is an older laptop like mine.
Issue the following comands in a console window:

Code: Select all

modprobe ac
modprobe battery
modprobe fan
modprobe processor
modprobe thermal
wmpower -no-meddling &
The little wmpower display shows temperature, battery status, and a couple of other things. Fan status is not shown properly, but you can usually hear when the fan is running.
There have been debates in the past about how accurate the temperature measurement is, but the temperature shown by wmpower is (AFAIK) the one used for fan control.

The power circuit for your fan is probably controlled by a PNP transistor. In the moment before power is removed from the system your control circuit shuts off and the fan rpms shoot up. This is most likely by design so if your control circuit breaks the fan will run all the time instead of never.

(*just a guess)

Black Adder:

Tried your suggestions, but my Puppy [2.13] doesn't have those modules available. System says
/sbin/modprobe: line 272: nnnn Segmentation fault depmod -a >/dev/null 2>&1
FATAL: Module XXXXX not found

Do I have to install something extra to Puppy?

Thanx

Drpaul,
You should not have to install anything extra. The modules are in the squash file zdrv_213.sfs. Puppy should be able to load them from there when acpi is active. But I have had problems with zdrv modules not loading sometimes, not sure why because modules load correctly most times.
The error message looks very strange. Are you creating a "clean" save file? An old save file might cause problems. Running with the boot option pfix=ram causes Puppy to ignore an old save file - could be worth a try in case that is the cause of your problem.

Black Adder:
Thanks for the suggestion. It WORKED!
Don't know what will happen next time I try and boot with the new saved file system.

Thanks again.

Dear Group,

I have been using puppy now for over a week and I think it's the greatest distro. It is the only distro that I have found that I can actually use to do stuff.

It recognises my modem
The modem/ISP setup was the easiest ever
I can read and write to files on the harddrive and other drives
I can save my settings
Install new software
After booting I can still use the CD/DVD
Reboot back to Windows (hardly ever)
Restart JWM and X without losing dialup connection
Dialup connection has yet to hang

I have a few problems with Puppy but I'll reserve comment on those because I think it's a situation of I'm not used to it or I have worked it out yet, it not you (puppy) it's me ;). However i am experiencing one problem that I think I need to attend to urgently. I think the notebook is running significantly hotter than it does with Windows. In Windows the temperature averages around 57 degrees Celsius with very little fluctuation (53-63). With puppy I get a range of 55 to 80 (possibly hotter) and the temperature seems to fluctuate much more. The computer feels much hotter, which is what got my attention in the first place. The bottom on the left side is very hot.

The notebook is a Sony Vaio PCG-FXA10, 1200 Mhz Athalon processor, 256 Mb Ram and 30 Gb hardrive partitioned C: 15 Gb and D: 15 Gb. The fan is working almost all of the time and sometimes quite hard. The files pup_save.2fs and zdrv_213.sfs are saved to hda5 (D: ) as I haven't anything visible on this partition, they are also found in /mnt/home.

In addition the scroll on my touchpad doesn't work with puppy, though sometimes it dies in Windows to.

For information purposes I have attached the dmesg file below. Apologies for the length of the post. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated as I really enjoy using puppy. I can do all the thing I need to on a computer and still learn about Linux and puppy. But I am concerned that with the extra heat the life of the notebook may be reduced.

Regards,

Marcus

While we're on the topic of fans, Is there a way to change/control when the fan turns on and off. Something like changing the upper and lower limits. I did find a thread on google but it was for an IBM.

I can see that the fan is on and am able to monitor the temp. which fluctuates from 40sh to 60sh C.

May not be connected but my lap (mentioned above gateway mx-3410) won't boot anymore. When I hit the power button, I think I hear the fan humming..& that's it :( .Bought it brand new & didn't really use it much.

Last thing I did when it crapped out was booted for just a few secs so I could remove a disk & then cut the power cuz didn't want win xp to start up. Done that quite a bit..over time, on several laps.

That a bad thing to do in general? Anyone know what the prop might be? I think I may have frazzled the bios & maybe if I take out the cmos bat for a bit, might be back in biz?

Turns out that very thing come up on an old desktop & was the very problem.

#!/bin/sh
modprobe ac
modprobe battery
modprobe fan
modprobe processor
modprobe thermal
#/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM0/polling_frequency
wmpower -no-meddling &

Did we ever figure out how to autodetect it?

or pmc or pcm or whatever the other one is?

I've got my machine and a friends with the other one (ibm thinkpad) for testing.

heat--no fan warning--laptop users

I just don't want anyone frying their laptop. As always.... contemplate.
A fair warning, and much appreciated by some I'm sure.

I found that, regardless of operating system, my laptop fan didn't run if I was working from CD and I was plugged in to mains power. That meant that long sessions from a LiveCD like Puppy's were going to get pretty darn hot!

The solution, for me at least, was in the laptop's BIOS. I found a setting that put the fan into "always on" mode while plugged into mains power. That solved the problem. 8)

Hope that helps others too.
am a fan of mini distros and noticed with both dsl and puppy that fan does not come on when using either with my laptop

fan comes on with other larger distros being used as livecd [eg knoppix vector slax pclinos]

laptop gets really hot; i mean really warm

reasons this might be happening???
solutions???

thanks

Please don't send PMs with requests for help.

If someone wants to help then they will be monitoring the forum for new posts. I already choose to be notified by email of new posts to any thread that I am interested in.
Discussion belongs on the forums so that it benefits everybody.

I suggest you use the information provided earlier in this thread to setup the software to monitor your temperature. Then you can come back with "my processor temperature is x degrees" rather than

While we are on the subject of laptops and heat, I have a question. My Dell inspiron 6400 runs fine with the fan coming on when it is working hard ( and sometimes when it isn't doing much).

However.... if I leave it for a while and the screen switches off, it is very warm when I come back to it even though it has been, in theory, doing nothing, except the odd daemon and the wifi. Is it heating up because the fan doesnt run when it goes into "screen switching off mode" whatever that is?

I would have thought it should go into suspend or hibernate if you leave it long enough, in which case it would be using no or v. little power?
Mike
